Adding New Units

Post by DauntlessK »

I wasn't able to find anything on the ability to mod in new ships. I'm new to distant worlds and love it. As a huge fan of space empires V, I was hoping they'd make a new one soon but I doubt it. This is definitely the next best thing.

Anyway I'm working on a new ship set for 40k fleets (how I love 40k) but I am wondering if it's at all possible to split capital ships into more specific categories. Get rid of capital ships entirely and add things like grand cruiser, battlecruiser, battleship, dreadnought, etc.

The Distant Worlds Legends modding guide has information on shipsets and how the sprites are built.

As you play the game, you can indeed employ several different types of Cruiser designs for an example. But it's up to the player to design the ships in-game. I often have several different explorer ships and I usually build a Cruiser type for my fleet that only carries bombard weapons, for an example. So I end up with two buildable Cruiser types in that way.

Ship classification means little. You can design an 'Escort' that's the maximum 500 size and a Capital Ship that's 200 size. It might help the AI in using them, but otherwise...

I would like to build some designs that the Private fleets cannot access.

For instance in a recent game I had Super Lasers, I would have liked to build a few Capital sized ships to house a Super Laser, but don't need or want every Capital to have one.
Designing the ship wasn't a problem. It was just not wanting the Privates to be running around with 100 Planet Killers on escort duty... o.O

I have never seen an enemy fleet with my eqipment. I have seen them use my pictures set... but the equipment on board is not my stuff. It makes ship identification a little more difficult, but they are not using my gear. Perhaps they stole the plans... I do not know if that is possible.

Hm. I have fiddled very little in ship design as you can tell so that is good to know. I see what your saying. Is it still possible I wonder to maybe assign different sizes to be very specific in regards to ships. Like escorts have to be no more than 200 or whatever. I think it would be cool to have a little bit deeper structure in ships, or maybe it would just be pointless. I'm not sure. Just something in me tells me its weird to just stop at "capital ships" when there are multiple smaller sizes below it... and it feels extra weird not to have battleships, battlecruisers and dreadnoughts.

Thanks for the welcome. and good catch. I have already looked at the modding guide, it is very very useful. Thanks. I guess I mean moreso adding a more diverse and strict ship sizing instead of what is already in place, from what I understand. I'm still new to DW so I could be misunderstanding.
