When attacking - what to look for

Post by demyansk »

When you have your units next to the enemy, what do most players look at as far as the numbers from the enemy hex. I know when you place your mouse over the enemy hex gives you some info but I have no clue of what the numbers mean.

How do you know your enemy is weak and ready to get blown away?

The numbers on the enemy unit represent its combat value. For exampe 1=1, the first number is the attacking CV, the second one its defensive CV. So what you are looking for is the first number of your unit versus the second number of the enemy unit. Simplified speaking, if you're CV outnumbers the defensive CV by two times it should work out for a deliberate attack. For a hasty one you have to consider that the CV of your unit is reduced by half. Terrain and fortifications boost the defensive CV, which should be reflected on that unit.

The real problem is Soviet Reserve activation and the influence of HQ's with SU's (support units). The wrong "die roll" and you're hurt, sometimes real bad. If a front has been retreating, Reserve activation is far less likely, but the SU support is still a pain. However, a unit that has retreated the same turn from an earlier attack is prime pickings for a hasty.

Ultimately, experience is crucial and as frequently said, there is no gain (knowledge) without a lot of (in this game) pain.
WITE is a good addiction with no cure.

What about the numbers that are located on an enemy inside the blue pop up box that gives you information?

I bought this game on the day it was released and spent a pretty penny on it. I loved the original war in russia, however, for some reason this game has never really caught on with me, I am not sure why, I never could understand all the inner workings of this game and when reading some of the posts it looks like I was studying for a college exam again. Just my thoughts

Think you won't know if opponent has reserves available and commitable until the first attack or defense. Local air-recon helps some. And unfortunate die rolls. Makes the game interesting because it takes some work and thought to pin down the local strength of an opponent.

Have played WIR and then wished for more detail in equipments & forces. WitE sure met that desire, but the game is (to me) opaque regarding the effects of all that detail.

When, if ever, there's v 2.0, though, I'm in.
