I tried ships. I'm not sure they're for me though. I've got a Bogue CVE somewhere (1:700 scale) and packed away in a box somewhere is a Buckley DE with photo etch to convert it to a RN Captain class frigate. But they aren't likely to get done any time soon. A small child and a lack of patience has seen to that.
So I salute you, for your ability to glue tiny bits of plastic to other, slightly larger, bits of plastic. [:D]
As someone who routinely glues small lead pieces to slighter larger lead pieces in 6mm, 1:285 scale for his other wallet-destroying metal-crack addiction, I must admit that I laughed at your description of 1:700 scale models.
The part that I don't laugh about any more is the fact that my 6mm minis can cost the same as your 1:700 scale models. [:(]
I wouldn't consider it any more wallet destroying than I would some of my wife's hobbies. I atleast have something left to display (Models), use (completed wood working projects), or earn my money back (real estate). Her...not even close.
I'll grant you, I use and display my minis so it's not like they're going to be a complete waste, but the price of lead and other metals used in miniatures has sky-rocketed in the past decade, to the point that I was paying almost $90 for certain minis at one time. Granted, those days are long gone, but you get the idea. What caused it to stop was an internal audit I did of my assets one year shortly after my divorce, when I realized just how much money I had sunk into a miniatures board game. I'll put it this way, my truck isn't as valuable as my mini collection...[:D]
