Combat sound in replay

Playing allied in PBEM, latest beta version DBB scen 28.
I can't hear combat sound altough I can hear other sounds, both ingame (i.e. mouse clicks) and every other sounds or music in Windows. In preferences I have set every sound to '2' and I exited the game a couple of times in order to save settings but still no combat sound. Generically speaking, my feeling is the Japanese will control most settings in PBEM but I'm not sure about it.

Are you changing your preferences from the main menu and then exiting, or are you loading the actual turn and then adjusting your preferences while playing that turn (small button at top left allows this)? The first one won't ever work. The second will allow you to adjust all of your sound settings and have them carry over every turn.
