Pockets are just so binary

Post by rmonical »

One of the less realistic feature of WITE is that pockets are binary. If the pocket holds, the the pocketed units surrender. If it does not, then they route (generally) out of the pocket. This causes some interesting maneuver and combat behavior.

One thing I love about the design is the way it manages time. So it is not possible to surround a unit with units that have expended all of their movement points (at the end of the week) and have it suffer the effects of being surrounded when it is attacked by units at the beginning of the week. Nothing I recommend here is designed to lessen my admiration for this design element. It is way cool.

I would like to see behavior that is more "analog" despite my profession in software. To wit - something along these lines.
- If a unit was isolated at the start of its player turn but is not in the next enemy player turn, then there is a chance it will surrender when it would normally rout. When it routs, casualties and morale impact are much higher. This might require record keeping that is not in the design.
- Further, if a unit is currently isolated and it routs, then the casualties and morale hit are higher then would otherwise be the case.
- A unit that is classically pocketed has an increasing change of surrender based on number of weeks in the pocket. Units pocketed have a decent chance of routing out (with higher casualties and morale impact) in the first week of the pocket. Lesser chance is subsequent weeks.

Not a big deal.
