What is the Latest Version...and where is it?

Post by solops »

I am running a bit confused here. What is the latest beta patch? I know the latest official patch is 3.4.0.202 and it is on Matrix's website:

But what is the latest beta patch and where is it?

I got sidetracked and did not get back into TOAW3 on schedule. As a long-time player who has bought every incarnation of this game, I still find it outstanding in terms of board-game style PC wargames. Is 3.4.0.202 still the latest? For the best TOAW3 experience, what should one do? Update to 3.4.0.202, of course, and then what? Add the AA mod? Also, my collection of scenarios dates back to TOAW1 and I am sure they won't work, so scenario recommendations? I found the Rugged Defense and Games Depot sites and they looks promising, but all of the scenarios are dated so long ago I worry about compatibility. Anyway, comments and advice are welcome.

Solops,

Just my two cents - I'd upgrade to 3.4.0.202, it's the most recent supported version.  Depending on how far back you go, you may want to clone your TOAW directory and give the clone a new name like 'TOAW 3.2' or whatever, then upgrade the non-clone account.  That way you have a fall-back, if wanted.

Again, my experience.  Some of the older 3.0 and 3.2 scenarios just do not work smoothly on 3.4.0.202.  You could play them on 3.4 with NEW SUPPLY = OFF and NEW TURN ORDER = OFF; or you could play them on your cloned, un-updated account.

I've been trying out the AAA patch on 3.4, and I like the results.  I'd suggest loading that patch after you upgrade to 3.4.  (And if you're concerned about its impact - make another clone of the 3.4 account, and AAA patch that - so you'd have an options of a non-AAA 3.4 TOAW, if wanted.)

For the old stuff, T1, ACOW, etc., they will not run on 3.4 without tweaking.  I rely on Shunwick's work with the Legacy Project.  There are tools to do your own upgrades, but his work is reliable and easy for me to use.
Here's a link to a thread where Shunwick discusses his work -

I have 3.4.0.202 plus the AA patch. Rumor has it that the TAOW underground is getting a fix for the "Ignore losses and trench," glitch. I will love it, but the current flaw really lets me smoke Elmer (or an unsuspecting opponent) when I choose the defense. [:D] I think Monty is somewhere in WW2 heaven saying, "See, all it takes is a tidy battlefield, and we will hit them for six." (Apologies to the Field Marshall who kicked a lot of ass in the real war). [:-]
