Assault Guns

Post by ironduke1955 »

Assault guns were the German stugs Light chassis mounted with a infantry gun for supporting infantry assaults hence the name Assault Gun. They did not in effect have Armour piercing capability. They should be mobile infantry guns/Mobile artillery used as the Germans intended for pill box busting . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StuG_III
Later in the War the Assault Guns were fitted with 75mmL gun and proved highly effective in a Tank Destroyer role. Its getting from there initial intended role as Mobile Art to there ultimate role as Tank Destroyers. A additional type of vehicle is needed to bridge the gap.

I know you can change the stats with the editor. But Assault Guns are not tanks they would be slaughtered against a tank since they do not have Armour piercing capability. They are not to be confused with the hunter killers like the Jagd Panther a completely different beast a large AP gun mounted on a medium Tank Chassis. Or even the later incarnation of the STUG as tank destroyer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jagdpanther

My understanding is that currently Vic sees the Assault Gun as something like StuG type (including the later modifications) and Tank Destroyer as something like Ferdinand/Jagdpanther type vehicle.

I think that also the German early StuGs had 75 mm armour piercing rounds so they had at least somekind of AT capability. However their primary role was indeed infantry support and in this role they were used more often.

But I agree that it would be meaningful in ATG to designate the assault gun as mobile infantry guns with lower AT capability because they carry less AT rounds. Because of not having turret they should have lower attack power against tanks when attacking but they should perform better in defense.

The same should be applied to tank destroyers but they should perform better against tanks and a bit worse against softer targets.

A Sturmgeschütz (STUG) with a infantry gun designated Assault Gun is considerably cheaper in production cost. Compared to A Sturmgeschütz Tank destroyer with a 75mm L gun. It would be better for players to have the option to manufactur two types of vehicle Assault Gun or Tank Destroyer higher production costs for the Tank Destroyer and different statistics. The Assault Guns could be more usefull against Urban or Fortified areas and soft targets like infantry Tank Destroyers against Armour.
