Finally got something to report, although it's not good. Not only is the IJA landing at Brunai, but when I hit Miri again today, I lost 9 of 18 B-17s when I ran into a cloud of 30+ Zeroes. Although I only show two bombers downed here, I lost another 7 either on the flight back or on landing at Soerabaja, with three pilots killed or reported MIA. Miri is officially out of the question for now, unless I can neutralize those Zeros.


One thing I'd like to know though is what type of Carriers did those Zeros come from? Zuiho, Hosho and Ryujo are mentioned, but aren't those CVLs? If so, what do I make of this? Did he off-load his Zeros from those CVLs or are they close enough to help stop the raid? I'm thinking that there's a force of CVLs just North of Borneo, but I'm not sure and I don't have any CVs of my own in range to do anything about them. LBA are not going to work and even the dreaded 'Beests won't make it through a Zero CAP without a huge escort, which I can't provide due to the massive sweeps over Singers.

He will have a lot of LBA fighters, and that very could be what these are, or he could be LRCAPing that area with CV support...I wouldn't have any idea without being you and seeing it happen first hand. If Miri is a size 1 AF, then yes, he can have fighters there, but he wouldn't be able to fly any other type of mission from said AF.

I thought that as well, but I noticed in the details that the individual squadrons were listed and those three CV names were shown. It could be FoW, but I'm not taking any chances, so I have to assume that there's at least a CVL fleet North of Borneo.

While today was a decent day for my subs, with the Dutch SS KXVI sinking an AV near Kuching, on land it was more of the same. Heavy casualties at Ichang from a Shock attack I didn't order (WTF was that all about? I guess I need to review my orders a little closer) and heavy casualties at Cabanataun from a IJA shock attack. Hong Kong still holds out though, so there's a silver lining there.

And another turn flipped. This one has a silver lining as well, with Dutch SS O16 putting a TT into DD Nowaki. I'll take those results all day long. Other than that, it was more of the same. IJA ground and air forces using Allied forces as target practice.

I'll take my lumps, but I'm going to remember this when 1943 rolls around.

In other news, I've got VP squadrons all along the CenPac, SoPac and SWPac rim now. I moved VP-101 and VP-102 from the Phillipines to Australia, with one VP stationed in Brisbane and the other in Townsville. I realize that this leave Perth with just a single squadron of Hudsons to watch the approaches, but that can't be helped just yet. I'll strengthen that approach as more units arrive, especially the two Hudson units that I'm sending back to Oz from the DEI. I'll post one at Darwin and the other on the West Coast somewhere above Perth to give better coverge. I've also moved VP-51, VP-71, VP-72 and VP-91 into the area, setting up coverage at Noumea, Suva and Canton Island (2 VP units here). Combined with my other VP units at Midway, Pearl, Johnson and Christmas, I now can cover the entire area with search planes. More would be better, but this is a start.

That was my thought as well, but I think I'll not buy them back out until I'm ready and able to rebuild them, as I will probably need those PP's elsewhere before then.

They only cost something like 10 PPs to buy. [:)]

I wasn't thinking about supply usage, but that's a good point too. I will just wait to buy them out until I have the units available to rebuild quickly.

And the first turn of the week is flipped. A few things to note today, most important in my mind is that Ryujo is confirmed to be near Jolo in the Celebes Sea. The Dutch SS KX got a line on her and sent four TT her way, only to miss with all four shots. I'd much rather see a hit or two, but just knowing where Ryujo is located is a good thing as well.

The Allied attacks at Ichang begin in earnest today, with a deliberate attack by eight Chinese Corps against three Divisions, a tank regiment and an armored car company. Losses are staggering, but we reduced the forts by one. Tomorrow we bombard while waiting for the arrival of three more corps, then we begin looking at additional deliberate attacks.

I could really use some help on the land war side of things, as I only understand the most basic of concepts behind how WitP:AE models land combat. Ichang is a perfect example of this, as I can attack in massive waves and get results, but I know that this isn't efficient and that's what I'm going to need in the Pacific campaigns. I really need to understand how to best use my LCUs instead of just throwing them against an opponent. Do any of you have any advice?

I could really use some help on the land war side of things, as I only understand the most basic of concepts behind how WitP:AE models land combat. Ichang is a perfect example of this, as I can attack in massive waves and get results, but I know that this isn't efficient and that's what I'm going to need in the Pacific campaigns. I really need to understand how to best use my LCUs instead of just throwing them against an opponent. Do any of you have any advice?

You have to both somewhat understand the combat models, especially the phases of fire support and then actual combat, and how forts and supply and HQs play into these interactions, as well as dig into the nits and lice of the devices. You have to take the time to survey your LCUs' internals. A Chinese corps is NOTHING like a USMC division in capability, even if the Chinese unit has more men.

For example, here you are using Chinese mass wave attacks against forts and tanks. You are geting creamed. If you feed in more Chinese peasants they will get creamed too. Look in the Chinese corps detail. What is the anti-tank rating? Compare it to a British or US Army unit of comparable size. The Chinese get eaten alive by armor. Their only real defenses are favorable terrain, and not fighting tanks.

Forts need combat engineers to take down. Again, look inside your Chinese units. China is always thin on engineers. Later in the war you can suppliment their power in pure massed infantry with other nations' engineers (and arty, and armor), but in 1941 they're out on a limb alone. If you batter the Chinese against forts they will die by the hundreds of thousands and you'll give him China for very little cost.

IMO the key to Allied work in China has very little to do with the cities. Use the terrain. Use the rivers. Pick your fights very carefully. Don't lose Chungking. (Read up on Chinese free LCU replacement rules if you have not.)

But mostly, get into the details of your units and understand what they can and can't do.

Another day flipped, although I think I've noticed something in my opponent's attacks. He seems to be having a problem with supply in China. I think, if I can keep the supply lines open in Burma, I may be able to stall the IJA in China, tying up a large number of LCUs that could be a problem elsewhere. Any thoughts on how to force the IJA to expend more supply in China than what they should? Bear in mind that I don't have an Air Force in China presently and probably won't have one there until '43 at the earliest, outside of perhaps some fighters and a handful of 2E bombers.

So, let's look at China in detail. This is the Western border, as it now stands.



As you can see, there's not a lot of movement in Western China from the IJA, but I have a feeling that I'll be seeing that change soon due to a series of intel intercepts stating that the 16th and 24th Infantry Regiments are loaded on transports and headed for Cam Rahn Bay. The only reason I can see for this is to have access to the railheads which lead into Western China. I'm looking at how to reinforce this area now, but I'm coming up with more land to defend than troops to do so with.

Eastern China isn't much better.



As you can see, I'm still trying to get the last of the stragglers into some form of a MLR. Ichang is still the scene of heavy fighting and Chengchow is looking like it's going to heat up as well.

There's a bright spot to this trouble though. I found the Akagi, along with another two CVs and two CVLs. Granted, I can't do diddly squat about it right now, but I found them all the same.

Finally, I found this down in the Coral Sea. Again, my CVs are no where near this location, as they're at Pearl (Lex, Sara) and the West Coast (Ent) waiting to pick up Yorktown currently, but it's still good to know where your opponent is located.

And finally, there's Burma. I've got three Divisions in place (18th British, 1st Burma, 17th Indian), plus several independent Brigades and even some Armor and AA. What I don't have is Artillery. In the air, I've got the entire AVG at Rangoon, along with two squadrons of Buffalos in the outlying supporting bases to cover the docks. Mandalay is home to three squadrons of British 2E bombers and is currently being built up for the coming fight.

Interesting day today. I think I crippled a IJN SS and China is still holding on. The Burma build-up is proceeding as planned.

Oh, and I caught Akagi and Kaga with a SCTF centered around Boise, Marblehead and three British "D" class CLs. I only hit Kaga once, but the main reason for this seemingly suicidal play was to damage the escorting CAs and cause them, along with the DDs, to use up their TT, which is exactly what I did.

Now comes the fun part. Force Z, with Pow, Repulse, 2 British CA and several other modern British CLs and DDs, is only two hexes away from the Akagi/Kaga TF with orders to intercept. This should be good.
