RE: Boise's Revenge

Where is the popcorn?

The Kates attacked with bombs. If they had used torpedoes it might have been different for force Z.

That actually played into my logic in attacking with Force Z here. If you'll look back, you'll see that Akagi and Kaga have been busy wasting their torpedoes on my fleeing merchant shipping. I figured that, since I've only seen two different CV strike packages in the reports, but have seen five different CVs represented in A2A reports, the CVLs had probably been stripped of their offensive units and were providing a heavy CAP so that the two primary strike forces could send their maximum number of Zeros with the attacking force. Given the pitiful skill of Allied bomber pilots at this point, combined with the Zero's superiority in the A2A role right now, a surface engagement made the most sense to me.

Now we'll see if it paid off. I just got the turn back and am getting ready to run it now.

Well that was interesting. Force Z was in a blocking position, just like I expected, but the Akagi/Kaga TF slipped past them anyway and is now on the Eastern side of Makassar. To complicate matters somewhat, an IJN TF containing two BBs and at least one CL just showed up in the Makassar Strait, 120 miles SE of Balikpapan.

Here's a map of the situation, as it stands.

Image

Force Z is just North of Denpasar, in the same hex as the escort TF which is escorting De Ruter back to Soerabaja for repairs. I plan on feinting towards Akagi/Kaga today, to buy De Ruter time to dock and begin repairs, before falling back with Force Z as well. Akagi/Kaga will get away this time, but maybe I can hurt those two IJN BBs on the way back. I suspect that they're the Mutsu and Yamashiro, so PoW and Repulse should be able to handle them.

RE: Boise's Revenge

Post by Paladin1dcs »

Again, a new turn flipped.

Clark Field fell today. I'd say the rest of the Phillipines garrison will fall within the next week to ten days, if that. Hong Kong still holds on though, but just barely.

I'm finally seeing movement across from Moulmein. Recon says that there's 6 units coming down the trail, but no more info than that. I've got one Division dug in at Moulmein, a second moving there today and will begin unpacking, plus three more Divisions with support units on the way within the week. I'm actually feeling pretty good about Burma right now.

RE: Boise's Revenge

Post by Paladin1dcs »

Well that didn't go like I had planned. Evidently the order to "close and destroy" a target is ambigious enough that my Force Z commander didn't understand it. Furthermore, I found out that Akagi/Kaga weren't completely out of torpedoes, as they sent a few my way to my great displeasure. Fortunately for PoW, the one that hit her did literally 1 point of damage. The bombs which hit PoW and Repulse? No damage either.

So now I try to open the range and keep out of Akagi/Kaga's way for a bit.

RE: Boise's Revenge

Post by Paladin1dcs »

Well, keeping out of the way was easier than what I thought, plus I got to eat a IJN convoy, sending at least one unit to a watery grave. Not sure what it was, but the fact that it was all non-combat squads makes me think it was an ENG unit of some sort.

There's more targets here, but we'll see what I find as I head further North into the Celebes Sea to try to make good on my escape.

Good job on catching the troops in those transports.

Every little bit here and there will annoy him, and help you keep your moral up till the middle of 42' when you can start doing more things.

I like your reasoning for going after the CVs with your SAG group...CVs tend to flee at the first sign of surface ships...he had to be shitting himself when he saw his fleet CVs in a battle with your SAG... I know I would.

You mentioned not enough troops in China... pick and chose where and what to defend. Cities, mountains, and forests are the best. Position yourself behind a river in a forest, and that will lead to some nasty results for the attacker... you can't defend everywhere...but you can make him pay for ground if done properly.
Life is tough. The sooner you realize that, the easier it will be.

I was doing it at Singers, but that option is closed now so I'm looking at Soerabaja if possible. If not, I'll send them back to Colombo. I've got 10 BBs in the Pacific (8 at PH and 2 at Seattle under repair) but I don't have any in the IO.

Also, Tomasz seems to be running his BBs in packs, as I saw a SAG with at least 6 BBs in it while I was dueling with his CVTF and eating his troopships. Not sure if that's accurate or not, as I suspect some of those "BB" sightings may be CAs, but I can't take a chance of running into that many surface units and being shot to pieces. Force Z is acting as a miniature Fleet-in-Being right now and that's what I need to buy time.

I'm pretty sure he did just that, as I had been hiding Force Z and all the other Allied CLs for several turns at Soerabaja. I had absolutely no DL on my ships when I sailed into the Makassar Strait. He said later that he was having a hard time keeping tabs on Force Z, who has been successful in raiding two different convoys so far, so I think I may be able to increase his worry considerably if I continue this course.

As for China, I think I'm in trouble at Ichang. I can't disengage without losing a large number of troops (around 50k) and I don't know if I can win where I'm at now. I hold the road leading into Ichang from the SE, which is his supply line, so there's a chance I could whittle his supplies down to where I could break out without much of a fight. I'm bombing his troops now to try to accomplish this, but the CAF isn't exactly known for coordination. They call them "Chinese Fire Drills" for a reason, after all.

Elsewhere in China, I'm still holding on for now but I realize that I need to fall back at best speed to a better defensive line. Any tips on how to do this when I've got IJA armor units near by?

Wait, I've got an idea. You can rearm a BB from an AE, if the AE has enough supply to handle that task, correct?

I've got several support ships, including two AE, an AR and other assorted Tenders headed to Melbourne. If they can handle that task, I'll send the AE North to rearm Force Z and keep them in the fight.

Time to break out the manual and start researching.

Would be nice if that was an Air HQ! Not sure of it, I will have to look it up.

I hadn't even thought of that. It had 230 squads in it, so it was something big but I'm not sure what.

Speaking of Air HQs, I was able to successfully rescue a large, and I mean LARGE portion of the troops at Singers while this little dance was going on in the Makassar Strait. I pulled out 224th HQ, III Indian Corp HQ, BOTH Indian Divisions plus five base forces (four RAF and one RN), three Heavy AA units, one ARM unit and one ART unit. I watched the convoys run back to Rangoon and the DL never budged, so I don't think he realizes I pulled those troops out. If I have time and PPs, I'm going to return to pull out the two Aussie Brigades as well.

Well, FoW not counted, but the transports and escorts involved can only carry 600 troop capacity. So, no air flot HQ, they use 936 capacity. The smaller COY Eng units are only 110 capacity.

Hi Paliden. Be careful about the defense at Moulmein. You can get outflanked by a IJA amphib in to pegu..IJA would enjoy killing alot of 41 allied infantry for victory points.

Man alive, now THAT's a fight.

Force Z took on a superior IJN force at night and whipped them, badly. BB Fuso was hurt, but not badly enough to suspect that she's in danger of sinking, but BB Hyuga got MAULED by PoW and Repulse both. I counted no less than 7 hits by 14" and 15" shells, with at least four penetrating the belt armor and doing heavy damage to her engines. Also hit were the upper works, with heavy casualties reported among the damage control crews. I also hit CA Kako, though not severly, and absolutely murdered CL Yura.

I paid for this the next morning though, with no less than 19 bomb hits and 5 torpedoe hits on PoW, while Repulse took 24 bomb hits and 1 torpedoe hit. Repulse is a lost cause, unless the damage control crews perform a miracle, with literally NO operational weapons or radars left save for her two forward 15" turrets. PoW, on the other hand, actually has a slim chance of making it to a port where she can be patched up enough to make the run to Colombo.

Just to recap, PoW has taken a total of 26x250kg SAP bombs, 7 aerial torpedoes, 5x36cm shell hits and 4 shell hits of various smaller calibers.

What, exactly, is this thing made out of???
