Emperor of the Fading Suns remake?
Hi, I just got an idea and wanted to share it... hope you'll excuse my broken English. Could you people at Matrix envisage the possibility of remaking or at least patching "Emperor of the Fading Suns" from Segasoft? It was an excellent, incredibly complex strategy game heavily balanced on the wargaming side, and it still has a selected elite of online aficionados (see the NOVA site). Alas, it was marred, and even spoiled, by bugs and inconsistencies due to its early release, still largely unaddressed by the patches released by Segasoft... it could be the strategy equivalent of "Pacific War". I doubt that Segasoft cares too much about the code, due to the product's age (about three years) and limited success.

Ancient thread but this would be awesome.
I was just googling Emperor of the Fading suns remake and it brought me here. Loved that game.

RE: RE:
LOL.. ancient indeed. Shows that times have changed, though... with the likes of Distant Worlds and Armada 2526, and Titans of Steel, Starships Unlimited and Starshatter going rather further back.
Unfortunately
probably isn't the case even now, let alone then. The suits would vigorously try and extract truly obscene amounts of money for it the moment anyone ever made the most low profile enquiry, only then to discover the only copies of the code were thrown out years ago. Is the 'Fading Suns' RPG IP still of any value?

From their description, however, I don't think it's a war/strategy game like the original.

Hi guys,
That was a game with a lot of potential. You may have forgotten, but we did at one point get the rights to this, but it went nowhere. Unfortunately it was not as straightforward as it seemed from the outside.
Regards,
- Erik

RE: RE:
Sorry for digging up an old thread, but I found this while doing a search on the forums when I wanted to make a thread about EFS. I have played EFS for quite some time, and I've been thinking of making something in the spirit of this game. I'm a C# coder, who has worked on 2 indie games before (Star Legacy and Star Apocalypse) and have been working on several modifications in the past, including Haegemonia Vector Prime.
I would be willing to help out here, if Matrix Games would be willing to have something in the spirit of EFS (with some differences though).
Let me know!

Hadn't known this historical tid-bit. Sad to hear that's how it went - I guess there were restrictions on what could be done with the material that you couldn't accomodate.

Yikes this thread is *thirteen* years old! [X(]
Yeah, this game still has fans after all that time though. It came out in '96, had awesome features - basically the scenario was part-Dune, part-Game of Thrones with houses battling for the imperial crown in a 4X-style game. People have been talking about remaking it for a long time but none of the attempts seem to have got anywhere. The devs don't say it, but my suspicion is that the owners of the original IP have unrealistic ideas either about what can be done with it or how much it is worth.
You can try downloading it off abandonware sites and trying you out if you like.

I admit that I never actually finished a game of it. Once I realised that you could simply ambush the opposing houses early and capture their 'sceptors' (apparently they no longer have dictionaries in the future) the challenge went out of the game - which was a pity because the back-story to the game was awesome.
I wonder - does Matrix still have the rights to this game? Now that Slitherine have their own, proprietory hex-based turn-based strategy game model which (at least by appearance) has been used for Commander: The Great War as well as Panzer Corps, can one possibly hope that they might have a shot at doing an EFS-a-like?

There's no denying the ai was about as stupid as can be. [:)] There was some good mods out there, really didn't help the ai though. I really liked the background too.

Yup. The biggest issue in creating an EFS-a-like for the 2010's is getting the AI right. Even now, it's going to be a tough one. Panzer Corps has solid AI but it doesn't know how to load troops on to planes/ships, HOI3 does a bit better but not by an amazing amount - a new EFS would need AI capable of carrying out multiple space-born invasions followed up by at least Panzer Corps-style ground combat. I think this can be done, but not easily.

I wonder if Shadow Empire, being developed by Vic (http://www.vrdesigns.net/) is not going to be a game in the spirit of EFS...
Anyhow, as Vic is incapable of doing bad games, I wait with much interest this game.
