PBEM - type in password, game drops to menu

Post by wesy »

I'm playing v2.2 PBEM, and I tried to load the opponents turn (US), password prompt appears - I type it in - I haven't changed it, and the game drops me be back out to the load game menu. Any ideas here?

Thanks!

Wes

Wesy, that usually means the turn you are loading is looking for the other side's password. Occaisionally my opponents (and me of course :D ) will neglect to save their turn, thus returning the same file you had sent them. Ask you opponent to try to load what he sent you- if he can, that's the problem.

Hope this helps

Let me see if I get this right. You load your opponenet's turn, type in (his?) password, and the game goes back to the main screen. The game goes back to the main screen anytime you type the wrong password. Maybe you just guessed his password wrong. Keep trying. There's only 2821109907455 possibilities left. :) (36 to the 8th power minus 1).

I have seen this too.

Player 1 is the Japanese

Player 2 is the Allies.

The label needs to be changed.

I suspect your opponent never saved the game. The game is looking for HIM to insert HIS password. That’s why it failed.

Yes, you opponent may have SAVED the game rather than END ORDERS PHASE.:)

Can you guys verify that the players did not "end turn", only saved? The reason I asked is on a few occasions, all my PBEM games (5)would not load, but would drop to menu after inserting password. I then defragged and did some Windows maintenance and the problem cleared up for all. On another occasion, an opponent sent a turn, same thing happened, the defrag/maint did not work, so he "Zipped" the file and resent...result was an accepted password.

Ron, there was some weirdness with Windows ME reordering files on hard drive that caused all sorts of problems over the years with various games having their save games corrupted for no apparent reason. It was a function of the behind the scenes disk optimizer (not the disk defragger - which is quite safe) that messed with the actual file offsets on the physical disk.

I seem to remember Talonsoft falling prey to this with Battle of Britain. Disabling this hidden Windows feature resolved the problem (as it really had nothing to do with the games). The fact that packaging the game into an archive (which corrects this offset issue) corrected your issue makes me suspicious of this specific problem which is a real bugger to hunt down.
