Looking for topo maps of Russia

Command Ops: Battles From The Bulge takes the highly acclaimed Airborne Assault engine back to the West Front for the crucial engagements during the Ardennes Offensive. Test your command skills in the fiery crucible of Airborne Assault’s “pausable continuous time” uber-realistic game engine. It's up to you to develop the strategy, issue the orders, set the pace, and try to win the laurels of victory in the cold, shadowy Ardennes.
Command Ops: Highway to the Reich brings us to the setting of one of the most epic and controversial battles of World War II: Operation Market-Garden, covering every major engagement along Hell’s Highway, from the surprise capture of Joe’s Bridge by the Irish Guards a week before the offensive to the final battles on “The Island” south of Arnhem.

Looking for topo maps of Russia

Post by wodin »

I'm looking for some War era topo maps of Russia..at around 1:25,000 if possible. If anyone can help would be greatly appreciated I was wondering what Panther games has come across for the EF game for instance with regards to finding maps.

Thankfully Pavel who is taking the lead on the East Front game has access to some Soviet maps but the text on these is all in Russian script so I am reliant on them converting it all into English. We are using 1:50,000 and 1:100,000 maps IIRC. Pavel can correct me if I've got that wrong.

I think I have a link to a Polish site somewhere in my favourites at home, will look it up later.

Here is the other link Wodin.

This especially might be interesting for you:

Note: German maps in 1:25,000 scale, so-called Meßtischblatt, or Topographische Karte (TK) can be downloaded from the Mapster project.

The subject is mainly Poland, but there is a wealth of maps to be found there, also covering Soviet territory.

these have the scale you need:

http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/ams/eastern_europe/

They are from the 1950s so the road/rail net is more or less correct for the Great Patriotic War but the town names have changed so it can be a bit confusing. But as topographical maps they probably are as good as it gets

Although these maps are 1:250.000 (not 1:25.000) I find them to be useful, thanks!

The most interesting stuff (1:25.000 and 1:50.000) is in here:

Also the map key helps to sort out the various regions (M,N,O)quicker:

As said, 1:25.000 maps are on this page

http://www.wwii-photos-maps.com/home_page_007.htm

and according to the map key here

http://www.wwii-photos-maps.com/russianmapkeys/slides/Leningrad-Moscow.html

cover the area from the eastern edge of the baltics and area between Leningrad and Rchev (O35, O36), but surely it´s all not complete. Most maps are german military maps, made from russian ones, supplemented with additional info, partly with Arty reference grids.

Personally I find the 1:50.000 scale maps sufficient for wargame mapping needs and there´s also way more available and cover larger parts of mother russia.

Beside that, it´s just a basic pointer and you really need to browse through the collections if you´re looking for a particular area map.

For what L, M, N and O means, take this

http://www.wwii-photos-maps.com/russianmapkeys/slides/Europe.html

as a rough guide.

L = south
M,N = middle
O = northern parts of russia

Here´s a PDF document usable for deciphering russian map symbols:

www.mapstor.com has a ton of them, very good, but most in Cyrillic

Lazarus.elte.hu/hun/digkonyv/topo/3felmeres.htm also is good, these are old Austro-Hungarian military maps, here knowledge of German is helpful.

Both sites have incredible amounts of very good topo maps if you can work around the language issues Jason.

Have you posted a request to the Panzer Command Oestfront forum?
They have a lot of experience with these maps.
