Ground combat

Singapore

Has been a pain in my backside.

I had 5700 AV last turn and I think Steve's forts were @ level 3. I have the SA HQ next door @ Johore Bahru... I had supplies & I have good leaders and most of the LCU have planning set for Singapore.

Thoughts on what I'm doing wrong - or do you think I've just been running a really bad streak with the dice?

Does anyone have a good link to ground combat they'd like to share?

TTFN,

Mike

Where & how is he getting supply? The LI only provides around 140 a day and his troops should be out of supply eating shoe leather by now.

Supply is Singapore's weak point. Too many AA and ENG units there to rely upon air strikes to soften up the troops.

I am definitely no expert, but I would have used high altitude escorted bomb runs and bombardments designed to use up his supplies combined with a blockade of Singapore until he was out of supplies. I am sure that is easier said than done.

Early on you didn't bring enough muscle and unfortunately his troops are now very experienced and probably have pretty good morale too.

You got his forts to zero -- can you keep them there? Can your troops attack again?

I did the bombing thing (and still am) for the last 2 months... He brought in TFs that dumped some supplies. The only way I could attack was with fighters @ 100ft. If I plant blockaids they get drawn into Singapore and the minefields and CDs... If I fly fighters from Singkawang and/or Jahore Bahru to CAP my blockaid TFs it decreases the number of MB I can fly from my bases. and Steve has been a fiend in the use of his subs... If I leave TFs in a predictable pattern they'll be dodging fish. And AAA has been pretty strong against my MB.

As fast as I knock down his forts Steve builds them up again... I think the model is way off in the defense process unless I'm doing something brain-damaged...

Currently my troops need resupply. Forts @ Singapore show level 2. I plan to attack again as soon as supplies are good.

You have a point regarding experience of his troops now but there's nothing I can do about that but try disruption and my choice is to attack the AF to *try* and stop fort from going up, switch to attacking his troops, or be ineffective at both by splitting my bombing targets.

Sigh! I really-truly feel at a loss on the ground combat. I can't tell if things have changed with the mods we've deployed, if it's just me using bad tactics, or if I've just been unlucky with the dice.

Very early on you might have made mistakes that have been compoounded by a couple of bad die rolls. From my perspective fundamentally you did not focus with all platforms required to seize Singapore with all haste before the fort levels made it to level 3. Operationally you split focus and even in scenrario #2, the early Chez vs. CanoeRebel AAR should provide a good background if the IJ do not blitzkreig Singapore and Palembang with all effort. Your opponent was very creative with the space and time you gave him. After that things went downhill. But, the evidence before you is that nobody has experinced the problems you have now in Singapore with the same level of software. [;)]

OK back to the Moose's AAR ...

In my game, albeit against the AI, I have 9 ENG in Singapore. They are amazing at repairing airfield damage as well as building forts when supplies allow it.

He obviously changed leaders since he is not getting a malus for them.

Can you run your sweepers in to work on the minefield present in Singapore?

Minefields of your own might hinder his subs? Sure they atrophy faster without a base, but might be worth it in the shallows.

In May 1942 my Singapore has only 150 mines left so if he didn't lay any new ones that would be approximately what is left. I hope that is not too much of a spoiler...

I feel your frustration - just throwing out ideas.

So I guess I'm a bit confused here. Do you have any idea why Steve would be trying a landing in Rangoon? Also, you have like an 8 to 1 AV ratio in Rangoon; one shock attack should cause them all to surrender. Seems like a silly way to waste units for the Allies at this point when he should be prepping for an invasion of Ceylon.

As for Singapore the only thing you can really do is mass up those IJA bombers and keep the airfield under constant repair. As long as he has an airfield to repair, he can't rebuild his forts. Rule #1 in my book for assaulting major bases is to never let your opponent rebuild those forts you work so hard to bring down. Those losses are a bit easier to stomach knowing the next assault, whenever it will be, will be against a lower level fort. But even then, I'm surprised you're having so much trouble with it given that you've dedicated over 5,000 AV to it. What do you plan on doing with those units after they sack Singapore?

Steve moved most of his Chinese troops overland to Burma so I'm guessing he is trying to put my troops between a rock and a hard place.

I saw his TFs with my air search in time to get troops down to Rangoon but I had to un-ass Toungoo to do so. And I barely made it down. My last ground unit from Toungoo finished unpacking from using the rails this turn.

I'll continue to hold off on the attack as Steve keeps massing ships in the Rangoon hex to support his invasion. This makes going after his shipping a lot like fishing in a small pond with hand grenades.

I need to neuter Port Blair tho. Steve is flying 4E out of there and I want to bring my mini-KB up.

Singapore fell last turn to a shock attack. These units will goto Sumatra & India I think. I really need to get some oil/fuel.

There's nothing like the sweet sound of Tokyo Rose. I think I heard her three times on this turn.

I'll continue to hold off on the attack as Steve keeps massing ships in the Rangoon hex to support his invasion. This makes going after his shipping a lot like fishing in a small pond with hand grenades.
Good point. You don't even need to give him bait for this trap so why not let him jump in it on his own accord! Although after those naval battles last turn and all those torpedoes his battleships took he'd have to be crazy to stay even one day longer.

There goes Singapore and you are doing great work at Rangoon. I don't understand his push on Rangoon.

Punish him!

Well done. That Nachi TF certainly did it's job. I agree. They will be singing his praise at least until around '45! [:D]

Thanks obvert, Lowpe, & Sangeli for the attaboys. It was a cool turn due to Nachi but that TF was in truth a long-shot. Now that turn is already past-tense.

I'm ramping things up tho.

I'm getting ready to para-drop on Sampit next turn. I've moved a lot of air groups about and I'm getting ready for Sumatra and Burma-II.

Spring of '42

Post by 1EyedJacks »

4-27-42

Singapore
I’m pulling DMS from around the map and running them to Singapore. They’ll strip the mines from that base and then I’ll use them for clearing Palembang, Merak, & Oosthavan.

I’ve got a good fighter CAP around Singapore while I await supplies and air support for this base. The 5th Air Division HQ is aboard a TF in the South China Sea and en route to Singapore. I’m also sending 15 sub chasers from Tokyo to Singapore…

Sumatra
I’m reconnoitering the enemy bases on the east side of the Strait of Malacca to see what Steve has going on. It looks like he’s been investing in Sabang for a while now…

Burma
Mini-KB is about to run up the Strait of Malacca to support operations up around Rangoon. A 5BB TF is near Miri and will refuel next turn before heading up towards Rangoon also.

The two Chinese Divisions @ Singapore are prepping for rail and will head up to Chiang Mai to meet a pair of engineer units. I’m going to march those down that back-door path to Taung Gyi. I also added an Oscar air group as Steve has been pounding at that base with some of his 4E units. It’ll be nice to give them a little surprise.

I’m massing more transport and engineers @ Hanoi/Haiphong plus pulling another supply TF from Tokyo so I can feed Kunming & Tsuyung. Steve has a stack of 23 enemy LCU just outside of Tsuyung that I want to pound and route so I can push into Burma.

@ Rangoon I’m performing a Shock attack to route Steve’s troops that have landed here. Steve has forces @ Bassein, which I own but is currently empty. I’m going to try to stand at Pegu and drive Steve back from Bassein & Prome.

By next turn I will be ready to start air operations against Port Blair & Sabang. I want to take out Steve’s air support and then run a strong amphibious assault at Ramree Isle and take Steve’s legs out from behind him.

What I hope Burma will look like is:
- A push from the East
- A back-door from Thailand
- A wall @ Prome & Pegu
- A back-attack from Ramree
- All covered with air and naval superiority.

China
In China 700AV of troops arrive @ Tuyun and are unpacking. They’ll be used against Neikiang.

@ Hami I have 1500 supply and just set supply_required to zero. I have 3 LCU @ Urumchi that are low on supplies. I’m curious to see if the supplies push up the trail to the units that are 7 hexes away.

& @ Kunming I have 10012 supply and dropped supply_required from 3427 down to 1427 to see if supplies push up to Tsuyung.
TTFN,

Mike
