The new Cold War turned hot wargame from On Target Simulations, now expanded with the Player's Edition! Choose the NATO or Soviet forces in one of many scenarios or two linked campaigns. No effort was spared to model modern warfare realistically, including armor, infantry, helicopters, air support, artillery, electronic warfare, chemical and nuclear weapons. An innovative new asynchronous turn order means that OODA loops and various effects on C3 are accurately modeled as never before.
In a few of the thread there has been some Q and A about how good the AI is or unexpected behaviors. Well, here is a case during testing to day to illustrate the point. This scenario is used along with another to test out various aspects of the combat model. The US forces sit dug in on the hill (blue 1) while a bout 120 Soviet tanks ad a few recon units assault for a VP marker on the hill and just off the west edge of the map in the city. The scenario has for a good number of plays followed the basic script of recon comes over the hill and dies at blue 2 to long range fire from the M1s. The tanks usually all run various routes as shown in red 1 to hammer the hill and take the 100 VP marker before moving into the town for the 300. Well out of nowhere a soviet battalion plots a northern bypass hook to Heustreu to go after the 300VP. I had to stop to take the image and report it to you guys. This is just another case of what was talked about elsewhere that the AI can and does shift its plans. If the fog of war was on, this would have been a major "oh $%#&" moment when they appeared behind me taking the weakly defended 300pt location.
Hope you enjoyed the story!

Cool, wonder if a real Soviet Regt/Divisional Commander would have exploited the situation or if they would have followed doctrine and moved in echlon over the hill? Thank God we'll never really know [&o]
Thanks for the example.

Soviet battle doctrine is centered around the breakthrough. They reinforce success and hold in place to tie down enemy forces where they can't break through.
The attack you see in the screen shot would be well within a Regimental/Divisional Commanders doctrine. His goal was to cross the river and it shows that he did. Mission successful.
Good Hunting.
