Auto HHour Slipping

Command Ops: Battles From The Bulge takes the highly acclaimed Airborne Assault engine back to the West Front for the crucial engagements during the Ardennes Offensive. Test your command skills in the fiery crucible of Airborne Assault’s “pausable continuous time” uber-realistic game engine. It's up to you to develop the strategy, issue the orders, set the pace, and try to win the laurels of victory in the cold, shadowy Ardennes.
Command Ops: Highway to the Reich brings us to the setting of one of the most epic and controversial battles of World War II: Operation Market-Garden, covering every major engagement along Hell’s Highway, from the surprise capture of Joe’s Bridge by the Irish Guards a week before the offensive to the final battles on “The Island” south of Arnhem.

Auto HHour Slipping

Post by Arjuna »

I decided to implement the auto slipping of HHour set by the player. This will only occur during the initial planning session if the earliest possible HHour is greater than the HHour you set. This avoids abandoning an attack just because you didn't estimate enough time before your HHour for the force to get to the FUP and reorg. If it is slipped you will see a flash message telling you by how much and what time the new HHour is. This will give you an opportunity to reset any HHours of other attack tasks that you may have been trying to coordinate.

I have started Hofen Ho Down scenario and gave each of my three inf battalions an attack order. I set the HHour of each to 0800hrs. Alas this was not enough time and I received three messages saying each of the Bns had slipped their HHour. I noted that 1.751st Bn now had the latest HHour 0831. So I manually selected the attacks of the other two Bns and set their HHours to 0831 as well.

I also fixed a bug in the cribbage code which was cribbing the assault task when the HHour was set. Now they wait patiently for the assigned HHour before getting underway with the assault.

This is an excellent compromise solution and nice step towards staff - commander interaction. It is actually a slight over simplification of a sometimes complex problem.

Often times commanders will hear the staff correction and ignore it to one degree or another. A battalion or regiment so ordered might then satisfy the impractical order by sending off a sub-element on its own while getting the rest of the force ready. The 5th US ID had to do just that when Patton ordered it to counter-attack through the 4th US ID lines. George Marshall weighed in with this observation post WWI:

"...But war is a ruthless task master, demanding success regardless of confusion, shortness of time, and paucity of tools. Exact justice for the individual and a careful consideration of his rights is quite impossible. One man sacrifices his life on the battlefield and another sacrifices his reputation elsewhere, both in the same cause. The hurly-burly of the conflict does not permit commanders to draw fine distinctions; to succeed they must demand results, close their ears to excuses, and drive subordinates beyond what would ordinarily be considered the limit of human capacity."

It would be great if their was more context in the message. "The men are too exhausted and must rest" "The distance is too great for the time available"

In general the messages could be more detailed... otherwise Auto HHour Slipping is very useful improvement, Arjuna! [:)]

Does this mean you're still working on the final build for patch 4, Dave, and it hasn't gone off to Matrix yet (after which it has to come back to you for testing, then back to them etc)? If so, what's the ETA for us getting patch 4, I wonder?

Until the server is rebuilt I could not put out a new build. So I have used the time profitably to fix this issue. I managed to get the server going of sorts yesterday afternoon. I plan to do a new build today. The public release of the final patch #4 is probably two weeks away.
