About the Fighting

The new Cold War turned hot wargame from On Target Simulations, now expanded with the Player's Edition! Choose the NATO or Soviet forces in one of many scenarios or two linked campaigns. No effort was spared to model modern warfare realistically, including armor, infantry, helicopters, air support, artillery, electronic warfare, chemical and nuclear weapons. An innovative new asynchronous turn order means that OODA loops and various effects on C3 are accurately modeled as never before.

Not sure where to post this, but I read a book labeled ""Red Army" by Ralph Peters, an excellent book. Now I'm going to have to reread it again along with "Red Thrust". Have to dig out my "MBT" board game and also "The Third World War - Battle for Germany" again [:)]

GDW's Assault series is a good board game analog and so is Lock 'n Loads World at War series. Maybe read a little Red Storm Rising by Clancy too.[8D]
OTS is looking forward to Southern Storm getting released!

I see you are still at Leavenworth. Maybe the guards will let you have some time for wargames.

I tried to get them to let you out on good behavior but you know how they are... [:D]

I hope life is good for you these days. [&o]

One of the biggest aspects of the fighting is how the AI responds during game play.

This AI, at this time, is very aggressive. As such, it is better suited to be the attacker than the defender, which is the opposite of most games AI's.

In later expansions of the game there is talk of creating task specific AI behavior. For now, we have this one. I have created a scenario to highlight the AI's behavior and explain some of how it works.

The short story condensed version...[&o]

Here is a slice of a battle with various Victory Locations (VL) and a very fluid situation to demonstrate how the AI responds.

The AI looks at each VL in relation to friendly forces and determines which is the easiest to take. It then goes about getting it.

Helicopters cannot control VL's. They can however be a denial force. By that I mean they will go to a VL and deny the enemy the opportunity to take it without a fight. The AI uses Helo's very aggressively.

This example shows the most likely AI responses.

1) I would not expect this to happen because there are substantial American combat units between the Soviets and the 130 point VL in Reichelsheim.

2) This could easily happen because by using this route there are no American combat units near the 130 VL near the blown bridge.

3) The Soviets could continue on the south side of the river and come to either the 130 VL or the 150 VL with out American units being between them. Again I would expect it to advance on the 150 VL because it has less defenders and the points are higher.

4) This could also be one of the AI's responses because the VL points are high and there are not substantial American defenders.

This example is pretty tight but overall it shows how the AI might make moves against you. If you move the American combat units around it will redetermine what the threats vs rewards are. That includes if the enemy takes VL's away from the AI. Depending on value, threat and reward it may counter attack you to take them back. Or it may simply keep moving forward for higher value VL's.

Another thing to consider, is that the AI is not an 'all or nothing' entity. It may well make more than one movement thrust at a time. It will not normally only go all out for a single VL. Unless it is the last one or obviously the much better choice.

Good Hunting.

By simply clicking on a unit it will display the unit organization. To keep from having to do that with every unit on the map you can go to the TOC and check the unit roster. This shows all the units in the chain of command and their physical condition. It also shows what damage to the enemy the unit has done.

Here is an example of the roster.

With that Soviet tank column moving through the village no wonder they suffered a morale loss.

Seems as though the fight for this village is from from over though with US reinforcements arriving rapidly to continue the contest.
