Questions about artillery

Post by schascha »

I'm playing a campaign as soviet. We are in november 42 and my german opponent didn't attack during the last summer but entranched his troops.
Now I have a lot of fortifications (3 and 4 level) face to me.
Which artillery is best to destroy this fortifications ??
And for the independants units should I bombard before the attack or should I include them directly in the main attack or both ???

Thx by advance.

Sappers are best to destroy fortifications (even if you fail combat, if you have a lot of sappers they will reduce enemy fort). I attach one regiment to each corps and keep 2 regiments in each army. I heard some attach as much as 3 regiments to a corps.

Artillery always helps, as it causes death&disruption which lowers final CV of enemy units, thus allowing you to win battles. You should build only artillery divisions (not brigades) and include them in main attack.

Morvael right on target with his advice (and your right, his contributions to the forum).

The only thing I would add is that I use the airborne HQs to manager my Art divisions at this point in the war. You can then attached them to a Front/Army if you absolutely need to and change them out without a huge AP cost if you need to do so. I find that sometimes helps in organizing my attacks.

I've read on another post that flaviousx let them attach to the Stavka.
I would have liked to do the same.
Are there any disavantage??

Thanks guys for the kind words, I don't deserve them.

From my understanding there is CV penalty for being under STAVKA, but this doesn't apply to artillery too much, because guns have 0 CV and their main effect is to reduce enemy final CV. I don't know about any actual combat modifiers for units under different command, so unless there are some, there is little penalty in combat when keeping arty divs under STAVKA. Of course the morale and movement points of those divs may suffer, as there are less leader checks available.
