I thought we had it when the other bloke in the other thread reported pretty much the same problem with Swedish.

RE: Shadows Problem

Post by rjord »

I have the same issue with trying to run my Star Wars : Alderaan mod in shadows. I am assuming I need to make changes to the mod to get it working in shadows.

Antiscamp........ I found that if I do not load a mod and just start a new game in Shadows then I can play ok. But if I open a mod, I get the same error you do.

I am assuming it is a change that needs to be made to the mod.........The error occours on the screen after the one where you select your race.....so perhaps it is something to do with the settings for the other empires.

I thought so at first too, since I've had that problem with Legends before, but now I'm running a clean, vanilla install and no mods are present at all.

Just noted that my error is an index out of range error while yours is an out of memory issue...... therefore your issue is different from mine and mine is mod related.

Did you install as administrator?

what I would do in your situation is to uninstall Distant worlds, reboot your computer , reinstall Distant Worlds ,Shakturi,Legends and shadows and make sure each is installed as Administrator.

Edit:

You may also want to try closing down any applications running in the background. Maybe you have something running which is causing a memory leak since you saw this happen with Legends as well.

This may have nothing to do with it but I noticed that Legends had an update a few days ago..... did you update Legends to the latest update?

Well, I saw it with Legends and mods and only in the opposing Races selection window. The same as you're referring to, with the out of bounds error. I mixed things up.

I didn't install the Legends update. I've only installed Distant Worlds, Return of the Shakturi then Legends and on top of that Shadows. I didn't install any of the updates. I assume Shadows contains them already.

I just reinstalled the game for a second time this evening, and still no luck. I do shut down all other background programs when I go in-game.

Just to verify.

I see you have DirectX 11, you did let it install DirectX 9c correct?

No Mods installed, I'm pretty sure things have changed for Mods.

I just ran the DXSETUP in the redist folder too. No luck.

And yes, no mods present at all. It's all vanilla.

I don't actually know how to correctly use the Windows Log, so I must say that I don't really know what it's telling me. I cannot find any mentions of the game in there though.

On my win 7.

Control Panel - Administrative Toools
EventViewer
On the left, expand Windows Logs, select Appication.

It should be sorted on time, and errors are not "information", and possibly red.

This is really acting like a dependency issue, just can't duplicate it here so far, while we we finally able to duplicate the other one.

You should see two prefs files, and something like DWCrashLog if one exists. If the prefs are there, and no crash log, you are at the correct spot, and no log has been written.

I am sure the tech guys here will be able to help you out......... if I was having the same issue I would probably try this

- uninstall Distant worlds.......

- Reinstall Distant Worlds - original...... check it loads new game ok
- Install ROTS...... check it loads new game ok
- Install Legends...... check it loads new game ok
- Install Shadows...... see if it falls over with the message

This would confirm that the issue only happens with Shadows and is not something happening since the last time you installed Legends

Yeah, I can't find a DWCrashLog in there. Though, it seems like I'm not the only one with this issue, although it is a rare one. I'll continue with this tomorrow. Thank you all for your help. It's time for me to go crash myself now [>:]

Post by elliotg »

Hi Antiscamp

You may have a similar problem to one of the other players, who seemed to have a missing, or broken installation of Windows Management Instrumentation.

Can you please check whether you have Windows Management Instrumentation service running on your machine?

To check this open Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services. In the list of services you should look for one named "Windows Management Instrumentation". The status column should say "Started".

If this is present in the list but not started, please click the "Start" link to the left of the services list.

If Shadows still will not start and you receive the same error, then you may have a broken installation of WMI. You can use the tool at this link to fix it: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/repairwmi.htm

If "Windows Management Instrumentation" does not exist in the services list then you will need to enable it in Windows.

Let us know how you get on.

Thanks
Elliot

It says Windows Management Instrumentation is started.

I tried the tool at the link you provided with the following results. I ran the script file I got in the download. A black command prompt flickered on-screen; nothing more. I then used the commands in the command prompt as the link states (net stop winmgmt and net start winmgmt). I tried starting the game. I still have the same issue.

Here is the full error message I get
See the end of this message for details on invoking

RE: Shadows Problem

Post by elliotg »

Hi Antiscamp

This problem you are encountering appears to be a bug in Windows as described here: http://brooke.blogs.sqlsentry.net/2010/02/win32service-memory-leak.html

We will be changing this piece of code in the next update so that it no longer uses this Windows component.

However in the meantime you could try stopping and restarting the Windows Management Instrumentation service in Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services. This should free up it's excessive memory use and thus hopefully give you better results when you start Distant Worlds.

Thanks
Elliot
