Paying the pirates? Disgusting. Pay them off long enough to get the spaceport up. And maybe shielded...

thinking about it some more - regarding relations with Pirates

if you pay them relations improve - does this mean they will prioritise your resource requests over other races they are not so friendly with? Or maybe just bring you larger quantities?

I think there should be an option to turn off relic ships completely, yeah.

That said, I kinda enjoy playing with them. Maybe I've just been unlucky, because in my pirate games I've never found any, but I very much enjoy meeting them. You really have to think quickly on your feet, meeting a ship that is sometimes more powerful than all the early fleets in the game put together.

But if you do find it yourself, it's really too powerful. In the hands of a human player, such firepower is way too effective at wiping out any threats.

If you turn off the original Distant Worlds storyline, the number of relic ships should decrease very significantly.

yes they decrease a lot if you turn storyline of. But there's a big difference between less relic ship and none[:'(]

Actually, what I found out is that turning off the storyline turns off debris field (and this kinda bothers me, sometimes I want debris fields with no storyline!)

But the issue is not debris field, is random ships, even with storyline off, in Shadows you can still find size 950 capital ships with 300 firepower when the strongest empire has 300 firepower... It is outright silly, because then suddenly you can go wiping everyone floor.

Oh yeah, the AI can do it too, and it is infuriating, but with the player is worse, since the player is more intelligent than the AI, and can realize what such ship can do, can thus can send the ship to every single enemy base and set the entire known galaxy to have 0 military.

The relic fields and extra bonus ships are the main reason I have not tried the traditional story since vanilla, and hardly remember at thing about that story arc.

The local pirates having some extra good capital is just good fun. They are not efficient enough, and it gives a nice challenge in neutralizing the thing.

There is an issues with wanting to play all the storylines but wanting less volume of working relics.I would like to see a random 50/50 factor when finding ships that are salvageable or not.

The relic ships doesn't bug me too much, though having options is always better. What I wonder is if deactivating a storyline I can prevent the special types of government or the special technologies to appear. If not, I wanted to have an option to do that. The special governments are overpowered and I saw a "death ray" technology that I managed to bully out of someone that was very powerful.

You always have options as the player...find a relic ship, then don't investigate it. Find a special government, then don't have a revolution and use it. I'm personally against putting too many restrictions on the AI empires though, the stronger they are the more challenging the game is.

When I have stumbled into games with the default story line by accident, I have retired every ship I got, and attacked every damaged ship in a graveyard. Killing a graveyard is a lot of micro management, though.

The pirate onslaught in Shadows can make even the most anti-alien-ship person crumble and keep the goodies for a while, though :)

An easy fix for this might be to simply make it so relics and certain overpowering special locations cannot be investigated without a specific high tech scanner installed in your ship. That way they only come into play late game around tech tier 4 or 5.

The question is the AI using it, not myself.
And I think people don't want restrictions, they want options.
