How should I approach the Distant Worlds Series?

Post by maeschba »

Hello Distant Worlds enthusiasts

I just purchased the DW Series and hope for countless hours of fun [:)]

Should I begin with the base game or directly start with the latest expansion?

Your suggestions for a good start would be hightly appreciated.

I would start as a normal Empire in the normal age.

Shadow's time frame would be to much for a new DW player IMO.

Hi Michael,

If you just bought the entire series, definitely install them all, then start with the Tutorial and play as a Planetary Empire in the Classic Age. I would not venture into the Age of Shadows until you are more comfortable, but there are many other improvements included in Shadows that you will enjoy.

For storyline options, I would turn off the Return of the Shakturi storyline until you are more confident in the game as well as it's quite a challenge.

Regards,

- Erik

Install everything at once, because the latest version has the best user interface.

But you may want to start a classic empire without the Shakturi storyline, so that means the same 'world' as the base game.

*EDIT* that posting overlapped Erik's.

What order should the installations go ?

I'm assuming the following:

DW
Shakturi
Legends
Shadows

Is that correct ?

I did as you told but felt overwhelmed by all the action and all my assets already available. After watching the PreWarp Empire Tutorial, I decided to play as a Normal Empire in the Age of Shadows (PreWarp and some custom settings like small scale, only 5 other races, monarchy, most settings on normal).

My first hour in this new galaxy was far more enjoyable due to the slower pace.

Yes start small and treat your first game as learning, so fewer AI and smaller world. Take your time and once you're comfortable start again with a 'big' game.

Turn story (Shakturi) off for your first run.
I've been beta testing myself for decades.

I personally think that its easier to get in to shadows and just play on easy and pirates are far away because you know which resources to prioritise and you could go from total control up to starting to automate some stuff when you feel like you want to focus on some other things.

There is one most important rule in playing Distant Worlds in my opinion: its the fact that you just have to play the game to enjoy and don't focus much on system grabbing for the sake of expansion.

Hi Maeschba,

Thanks, that's good feedback. I can see how the pre-warp empire may be less intimidating as a place to learn, even though it's more challenging in terms of game difficulty.

For other new players wanting the simpler pre-Warp start, you may want to change the difficult to Easy, the Pirates to Few and set them to not be Nearby, then set your Home System to Agreeable and you should have a much easier game to learn with. I'll see if we can add something like this as a pre-configured option for a first game based on your feedback.
