Does anybody know what actually changes when I change difficulty? What and how large bonuses does AI get?

In shadows, just about everything changes. Penalty for you at least, probably bonus for the AI.

It includes taxes, extraction speeds, countermeasures, targeting... a whole lot. I have no list, it was written by Erik once (in the Shadows thread, I think). Happy hunting if you try find it there ;-)

When you click on a difficulty level, an item on the top of the screen tells you what it does. The problem is that there are other settings (for example pirates, number of colonies, etc) that also affect the difficulty in various ways. If after setting what you think is a good difficulty for you it is still too difficult, check out some of the threads on the subject, particularly the one for beginners by Eric pinned above. Many of the videos for example the one in the video thread with the word "micromanagement" goes through the menus in detail.
