Is it really necessary to start a new game after patching?

No, i can play with my old Save Games without any Problems.
Und wenn wir marschieren,
dann leuchtet ein Licht,

Not necessary - but your save files will be in the old version's save folder so you will have to point the game there after the update to find them.
