How many races/shipsets are allowed?

Post by dostillevi »

Quick question.. How many shipsets and races are allowed by the game engine? The race files mention 0-50 as the normal ship design family index.. does this mean 50 shipsets is the max?

Yeah, I wanted to ask about the same thing. The original DW seemed to have its race handling limited to 50, but it could have increased in the last expansion.

As of yet it's still 50 for the number of races and shipsets and around 500 for
characters. Elliot hasn't told us it's changed since Legends thus far. Remember also
that the amount you can use is based on what your computer can handle performance wise.

Speaking of performance, I'm curious what the bottleneck is. I've run this game with the game folder and all assets loading from a ramdisk with no improvement whatsoever (pre-shadows). I have a core i7-930 6gb of ram, and a geforce 670 with 2 gb of vram. My best guess is that the game doesn't activate the graphics card due to its design, so the processor is left to do the graphics, yet in my case the i7 does not have any integrated graphics capability. I know this is a big tangent for this thread...

Anyway, I'd love to see that limit of 50 increased, especially with 5 more slots taken up by the new shipsets in shadows. Its a shame that I can't run both the extended mod and the mass effect mod at the same time anymore(as they're currently packaged, I can remove a few races), and I'll sorely miss out on whatever needs to be removed to add the Eve Online mod when that is released, not to mention the plethora of star trek, star wars, and BSG mods (and others!) that deserve a place in my universe!

Would be very nice if they could achieve a state where only the hardware sets the limitation for your content. A few upcoming games (X3: Rebirth, Planetary Annihilation) promise to be fully compatible with future numbers of cores/threads to allow for near limitless performance in that respect.

I think the max is 50 shipsets.

I have tried renaming "family50" to "family49.1" but when I do it shows the shipset for family1. The shipset works great when its called family49 but when I rename it to family50 I get this error.

When I try to add family50 I get this error:
