Three questions

Post by Unforeseen »

Hi,

Is it possible to allow a race to still research tech that would normally allow the construction of a wonder but prevent them from building the wonder? This is to prevent a couple of late game empires starting out in my pre-warp set up from building all the wonders before i or any of the other races are able to even develop.

Can i add more than 1400 stars to the galaxy map, and if so is there a maximum # of stars and/or a way to increase the map size. My CPU does not even slow or increase its thermals in the late game; and i'd like to be able to spread out the empires a bit more...5000 stars would be about right. (This isn't a joke)

Is there a way to bypass the limit on objects in a solar system? When i create Sol, i am unable to create our solar systems asteroid belts entirely.

Thanks :)

Can't answer your first question, but I have some knowledge of the second two.

I have started a size 1400 galaxy and have added a couple of dozen stars to it. The game ran fine. I didn't count the initial number of stellar objects (!), so I don't know for sure that the game actually gave me 1400. But if it did, then you can definitely have more than 1400. I don't know what the absolute limit is.

Regarding the solar system, I have done quite a lot of work on creating one myself. I have not found a way to get around the limit, but I will say that I have found the main problem with the limit is the asteroid fields. If you just limit the system to planets, moons and individual asteroids you can include well over 200 objects (not saying this will run smoothly!). I don't know what the upper limit is. I thought it might be something obvious like 256, but I got bored when I reached 260!

The problem with the asteroid fields is that they're made up of dozens of small objects, so you rapidly reach the limit (whatever it is). So the trick is to add all the planets, moons and individual asteroids first, then add in asteroid fields last. You won't be able to add multiple asteroid belts, nor can you place them continously around the sun. However, I have found it's fine just to put in one or two fields here and there. It's not like they show up very well, and they seem to be a breeding ground for Giant Kaltors.

Short answer to the first question - No. The higher tech races will always snap up the wonders. The only exception seems to be the Mechanoids as they care little for such frivolous things. But that does go to show you that there is code in the game that stops them (and probably any race set to "expanding :No") from building wonders. Setting other races to not expand isn't really an option so at the moment it simply can't be done.

Personally I would love to have an option to turn wonders off (or at least those that aren't part of a races win condition). Another interesting option would be to allow only one wonder per world. Hmm, I think I'm getting into master wishlist territory here.

Anyway, Osito answered the other two questions pretty much as I would have so I'll leave those. Again, wishlist territory.

Thanks Osito and Fenrisfil;

I should be able to make both belts using individual roids, though they wont be as wide. I suppose one thing on my wishlist is a more realistic random system generator that takes the outer roid field that most solar systems probably have in real life (Left over debris from the creation of the systems planets and moons)

I may be able to work non-expanding in for the two-four races starting out as highly advanced; two of the races in particular would make ALOT of sense.
