I think the same plane flew over New Milford a few years ago. I was around quite a few DC-6's and 7's in my youth and when I heard the sound of the radial engines I ran outside and saw the plane but did not have the foresight to grab a camera (just as well, the batt was probably dead). Thanks for the pic.

Thanks all. I finally learned the air-show lesson of dialing in 2-3 stops of over exposure. Otherwise everything is a silhouette

Another trick I found with shooting aircraft was to set the exposure meter pointing at something neutral on the ground then shoot up. This worked better on the old school cameras than the newer ones.

thanks for the tip. I'll try that. I got a bit of practice at the Jones Beach air show on Memorial day. the Friday rehearsal is free and there is virtually no one there. Focusing on at F-18 doing pretty much evasive maneuvers is a bit tougher than a B-17 though.

Why do the inboard engines leave marks on the wings but not the outboards?

Exhaust configuration? Air flow?

I think those marks are rubber thrown from the tires.

Is that the Sentimental Journey? If so, she was here at the airport a couple of weeks ago..have a bunch of pics with my little boy climbing all around in her and a video of her landing right in front of me. Love love love the sound of those engines.

I don't think so as her schedule shows her in Missouri this week. I can't tell from this photo. I have the original at home. The shot you see is cropped but the camera and lens were pretty high resolution. I'll check the RAW file tonight and see if I can pull the nose art.

From color scheme & tail letters that looks to be Yankee Lady. SJ has blue markings not red unless they redid her paint scheme after repairing her when she had an accident a year or so ago (wheels up landing IIRC)

Sentimental Journey has blue trim. It is one of the east coast based B-17s. If I remember correctly, there are a dozen in flying condition around the world. 11 of those are in the US, one in the UK.

If you look at the exhaust pipes, the inboard engines have the exhaust running down the side of the nacelle and the outboard have the exhaust on the bottom. The exhaust from the inboard engines flows down the lower surface of the wing, but the outboard engines have the exhaust stood off enough that most of it separates from the aircraft right at the pipe.

Not all of the exhaust escapes though. In service B-17s would get exhaust stains on the outboard engines, but restored planes get cleaned a lot more frequently than working birds did.

Yankee Lady it is. I checked her schedule and she was in New Jersey on Saturday.
