captured ships blowing up?

Post by Kayoz »

I sometimes have captured ships inexplicably blow up. This seems to happen if the drives are knocked out, though this may be coincidence. I'm at a loss to explain it.

All empire policy settings are set to enlist.

Just to clarify one point, when you say "captured" you means the ship is yours before it blows up (rather than it's in the process of being captured)?

I think some slow weapons (missile are still in the flight, ok), but some weapon types still shot (maybe graviton beam, not ok) on ships while capturing them.

Ok, the reason I was asking was because of the phenomenon described in my post here:

tm.asp?m=3348297

It's not quite the same thing, but you get the same sense that a ship has just blown up (i.e., it's destroyed when it still has plenty of armour and components left.

Nope, it's captured. Colour has changed and I can interact with it. Nothing in the area which can attack it. On some occasions, I even have time to assign a constructor to move over and repair it.

And a minute later or so, it goes pop.

Could you please upload a save file and post a screenshot of your boarding and capture policy settings?

I noticed in 1.9.0.5 that capturing newly built construction ships on an empire homeworld would sometimes cause them to self-destruct. I assumed it was related to the rule that prevents the capture of homeworld spaceports and defensive bases.

It happens irregularly. I'll try to see if I can reproduce it.

Reproduced.

Upload:
DWS-1907-ExplodingCaptured.rar
- policy capture setting screencap in archive (all set to "enlist")
- ship in question - "Crushing Conquerer" (last capture in logs)

I thought it was lack of hyperdrives too, a number of times I saw ships that couldn't move blow up when I had policies set to enlist. Was that what you reproduced?

I don't think the lack of a hyper-drive is relevant. I've seen many ships captured that lacked hyper-drives and needed a constructor ship to fix them.

If it's going to self-destruct due to the lack of an operational component - then why wait till the boarding action is done? If it's working as designed, then a quick explanation should be enough to clear up the issue. It seems Erik is at a loss to understand why a ship that's captured will blow itself up, so I think the issue is worth pursuing.

Hi Kayoz

Thanks for that savegame upload.

This is currently working as intended. Hopelessly damaged ships like the one in the savegame are auto-self-destructed (auto-controlled, damaged, no hyperdrive, no other movement, etc).

However I think that this feature is too confusing, so will disable this for player ships in the next update.

Thanks
Elliot

If it's working as intended for a reason, then I don't see any reason to change it. All that's necessary is that a message be logged for the player - "Ship X was hopelessly damaged and has been scuttled by the crew.".
