Suggestions for a good simulation game?

Fein then, twist my arm. I'll go back and pick it up. It's only a couple of buck anyways.
Thanks again for the suggestions (and by all means continue). I'll be poking thru these links that y'all have posted on Monday when I get back the office... :^)

Feinder, make sure to patch both games to 1.1, then install PM patch, and, especially for SH2, assorted user made mods, from www.subsim.com. They make for a completely new game.
Who says UV is the only game where you have to spend whole afternoon applying all the patches and mods? ;o)

Is there any info or a web page for this game?

Thanks for the suggestions Oleg. I got them both yesterday, but as you promised, I spent all of last night downloading patches (on 56k dialup).
It's ok. Not a rush. :^)
Thanks for the suggestions. At least the rule book looks interesting thus far!

Thanks for the info.
While subsim is down for a few days, here is a site where you can download 2 dozen missions and mods for SH2 and DC. Command a destroyer at the Battle of Midway

BTW, Destroyer Command can be had pretty cheaply now. I bought mine new at EB for $9.00

Fighting steel is a dog, NWS's valiant efforts to improve the game only made it a bit "less" of a dog, but still a dog.
Best bet is to go with either Action Stations or Gary's old 1986 tactical naval surface games "warship" and "battlecruiser"
While Action stations has a superior command and control model (particularily in squadron actions) and a fairly accurate database, its very much an "under the hood" type wargame where you only get 'combat reports' but not the intricate and rich level of data on weapons play you get from grigsby games such as Steel Panthers, Warship/BC (+ other SSI era Grigsby games), and of course, the most current game, Uncommon Valor.
For that reason I prefer Warship/BC Its strengths are a far more immersive environment for examining warship/weapon interactions (right down to the individual shell hit/hit location and what said shell does) to specific mounted weapons tracking with a rich ship systems portrayl. The only weakness in this area, no tracking of "list", only a general floatation damagea rating) The interface is also far easier to master and the combat/orders integration is very smooth and even tempo'd (particularily now as on the emulator, you dont have to keep reloading in the seperate "combat phases" and "orders phases" off of a floppy disk like in the days of old......ah memories of 48k machines
)
available i believe at the underdogs site though its only the IBM version and is fairly yuky, even by 8-bit standards.
Your better off aquiring the Apple IIe version of the game via the Applewin emulator for the PC.
(The 8-bit Atari version was the best but i've not seen a port of it for the Rainbow 8-bit Atari emulator)
IMO, there has yet to be a computer turn based wargame equal to these two though Action Stations comes close (that klunky interface though is a big turnoff for me)

SH2 was playable with the mods, but still didn't incorperate failure into the game. So if you miss your approach to hit that fast moving convoy - you failed the whole thing and had to restart. More importantly, even with the patch, no ASW in the history of ASW is as good as the AI destroyers in that game. With just ASDIC they find you, and hunt you down EASY with the best Davy Crockett depth charging ever imagined. Is unrealistic to have to shoot all the destroyers first before returning to hunt merchants (by then you are out of torps and have to sail alongside with your deck gun).
Don't have DC but I want it now I've seen the Jutland mod!
As for Sub Command - the single player game is boring and quite a pain to do but you need to do it 30 times over before you go for an online dive with some of the guys at Subsim (can't remember which part - think they are the wolfpack, or that could be the SH2 players). These guys really do outclass those of us that are casual gamers.
Also - a good set of headphones turned up real loud will help you play Sub command - too much important sonar info is lost in the PC speakers. You need to have it up real loud to hear bottom echoes or accurate screw counts which are indirect returns (the detail of which is amazing) only problem is when someone goes active and pings you it tends to burst eardrums at that volume.
All the Star Trek (Starfleet command series) were essentially naval command engines (2d even though they were meant to be 3d) with small fleet command sort of ideas etc. - Shouldn't be too hard for someone to hammer that into a real naval combat game.

I used to play the game that inspired Starfleet Command and the series is top notch. Of course, not everyone likes Star Trek, but the naval and ship handling rules in the game can make you think you're fighting on a ocean and not in space.
I'm still slugging my way through the third one.
