I stumbled on a "Great" use for Calvary

Post by timberwolf15 »

This is for Calvary not horses I haven't fiddled with horses yet but there is a great thread about horses located here:

tm.asp?m=3291230

I hope the link thing worked. ... Anyway, Back to CALVARY !!! Calvary can't carry anything but has a better recon value that infantry etc. but not jeeps. However, Calvary as compared to Jeeps zooms all over the map enabling one to grab cities fast. This is a bit of an exaggeration but on maps that do not have ANY roads they easily outrun jeeps from my expierience. May be worth a try but I figure its only usable for the beginning of a map later on you may wish your calvary was all jeeps but they are a neat unit to play around with.

So they are great if:

No roads on map - and its a map wherein each Regime has only one city at first.

And they do have a recon value that is ok. But they smell.

Me again lol. Calvary is great cause you get the city in your territory "fast" then you can assign it to a HQ and the city begins building up its stucture sooner than if you had finally waddled over a jeep or unit in a truck in order to get the city in your territory. who cares. [>:]

I play with roads Cavalry is great for stone age or rough terrain type games.
Favoritism is alive and well here.

Yeah I'm gonna do some roads too and watch the calvary get run over but there are no roads within 1000 miles of the tent I live in so I go for the realism.

Playing with the 'no roads' option is a severe handicap for the AI, especially in one town start games, as they aren't very good at road building.

Hey there is no "Calvary" in this game.

(sorry couldn't help myself)

You are quite right, cavalry rules early to midgame. Despite the fact that they are quite expensive, they have a high recon and can just go about anywhere, even mountains. Yes jeeps have an even higher reconvalue, but are "wheeled" therefore have the mudpenalty... and if you lose 1-2 jeeps in an attack that unit may become "foot" again. Cavalry does not have this penalty, a few losses and it's still considered "horse". Many of my early build Cavalry units get very high Exp levels, many higher than 80 [&o]

Also great in the early phases of random games if you need mobility and are running low on raw materials.

Cavalry are good but worth considering mounted infantry instead - you can get mobility but also a better unit mix (which can be more useful in mid and even late game) plus if they get good experience you can motorise or mechanise.
