The Marianas Islands newbie style

Post by Mike McCreery »

On the suggestion of BBfanboy I have started the Marianas scenario.

There is no real good area to stage out of which is the reason for the assault on Guam, Tinian and Saipan.

I set Kwajalein port to expand.

I moved some PA up to Eniwetok to give me an early warning of approaching ships.

I created an APA to evacuate the 1st MDB from Laysan island as there is no need to defend it. I sent a supply ship to Johnson Island.

I created 3 main Air combat TF's with 3/3, 3/2, 2/2 CV/CVL's and sent them to hang out at Roi-Namur at the moment. The TF's are topped off with CL's & DD's. I created 2 surface combat fleets of 6 & 5 BB's with CA's & DE's topping them off.

I created a large supply CS to Making and a fuel CS to Tarawa.

I sent an amphibious assault to Maloelap consisting of the 3rd MDB.

I sent the 804th,805th,806th EAB along with the 16th USN seabees, the 1st USMB EAB and the 9th Marine MDB to Ailinglap to build up the airfield and port there. I also sent a cargo TF to Alinglap. I sent the 225th Artillery along with several Amphibious tractor battalions along with the III & V US Amphibious Corps to Makin.

Hopefully the Subs are on Auto because I am not doing anything with them.

Set all DB's to naval attack/rest @ 13K feet. All escorts to CAP 40 at 10-15K. Set all TB's to search 40. Created 3 CVE TF's to escort the troops going to Mili, Maloelap, & Alinglaplap. Topped out all flight crews with "any" pilots.

Hit the return button...

I had some LB's fly out and do 14 hits to the airfields of Ponape.
Danced with a submarine but neither TF was injured.
Mili converted over to allied control.
Several of my subs hit mines at Saipan and were seriously damaged.

Setup a bunch of AM's as sub patrols.

Moving the 2nd & 6th Marine Regiment to Makin along with the 706th tank battalion.

Moving the 4th & 22nd Marine Regiment to Tarawa along with several tractor battalions.

Hit End of Turn.

I hit an xAK - The Taifuku Maru and killed 53 Japanese troops near Ulithi.

My subs hit about 7 mines around Taipan.

I got 2 more runway hits on Ponape.

That is it for turn 2.

Good luck with this one. You get lots of toys to play with but the opposition is pretty stiff.

Per historic Marianas invasion, the Japanese fleet will come to oppose you in the Philippine Sea. Most of the fleet is off-map for the first 10-15 days so you will have a free hand with your carriers BUT, it is a long way back to base to replenish their sorties, so do not waste them on bombing land targets and minor warships. You do not want to be caught short on ammo or leave your amphib forces unguarded while your carriers go back to port. That is just when the Japanese Carrier fleet will show up.

What to do while waiting for the Japanese Carriers [Kido Butai, or KB for short]? You have surface ships that can go raiding and ... subs. Allied subs all have good torpedoes in this scenario and they are one of your best assets. You must learn how to use them! There should be two goals for them: scouting the location of the Japanese fleet and sinking major warships and transports.

You should assign about half the subs to patrol the east side of Peleliu/Babeldaob and the path toward Guam and Saipan from there. These will get some of the reinforcements and supplies being shipped to the Marianas. About 1/4 of the subs should patrol between Iwo Jima and the Marianas to interdict shipping from there. The other 1/4 should patrol in the Philippine Sea due west of the Marianas and a few between Truk and Peleliu. The AI will often send a raiding cruiser force to Truk to refuel and thence toward Eniwetok to attack your shipping.

Setting up patrol zones for ships and subs is a little tricky the first time you try it. First, decide what home base you want them to return to for reloading of if damaged. On the TF screen, set the home base accordingly.
Next set the sub TF react [right side, near the bottom] to 1 [max for subs]. Ship patrols can have a higher react setting up to 6. This influences how much the TF will move to intercept an enemy TF not in its own hex.
After the react, click on the "Task force routing" text in the top central area. Set it to "Direct & Absolute" for subs. For surface TFs you may not want to use absolute because they will ignore air threats if this is set. Finally, to set the area to patrol you must first, set the task force destination as its home base.
Then, go back to the TF Routing screen by clicking on the text, and you will see the option to "Set Patrol Zone" is available. Click the button and a sub-menu opens up. You can either set the zone yourself using the three zone points [you can choose one, two or all three points], or you can click on "Patrol around Point" and select a single hex, whereupon the AI will create a random zone. The latter method is heavily influenced by nearby land. The first method takes longer but gives you control of the zone. If you want to see what areas you have your zones set in [all of them on the map], press the number 6 and the zones will be highlighted in green [zone limit points] and yellow [area between points]. Press the 6 again to hide this clutter. Note that when you first select a zone point there is a pause while the computer calculates paths, so don't do anything else until it returns you to the patrol zone setting screen.

A final note about subs: the skill of the skipper is critical to their success. Check each one before it leaves port and if the Naval Skill or Aggression is lower than 65, use your political points to replace them. If you run out of PP, leave the sub in port until next day when you get 50 more points.

About the invasions: you don't have enough ships to do all the invasions at the same time. Saipan has a very nasty naval fortress that must be bombed and bombarded before landings and Guam has lots of troops, with more coming from Babeldaob. Your easiest first targets are Rota and Tinian. You want to take these quickly and get the airfield repaired so you can put LBA fighters there to protect the next invasions. Check the target prep on your ground troops and load up the ones for Tinian and Rota. Use more ships than you need for rapid unloading. Especially use the LSTs, slow as they are. Keep the ships together and provide good ASW both within the TFs [small ASW vessels] and in dedicated ASW TFs [DEs and DDs]. Bring minesweepers! You will not have much opposition other than subs until you get 25 hexes or so from the Marianas. Then you will get air attacks too and you must have CAP available. Use your CVE TFs to provide the CAP. The big CVs should be mobile so the subs cannot converge on their location.

Move most of your support ships to Eniwetok so reloading and repairs are supported.

That's it for now. Good luck!

Knowing now what you have told me would make me re-play the whole scenario from the start. I guess that is why it is called newbie style.

Anyway, I am resisting the urge to start over and make it *perfect*. I have put most of the troops designated for Tinian on LST's,LSD's,LCI's. Going to send them to enewietok for refulling for a direct attack on Tinian.

Dont see any troops for Rota but either my mistake or I can send troops destin for Guam to the island instead. Many ships are already moving to stage at Makin and/or Tarawa. I am playing this one a little safer than the next will be. Set most of my sub's to base out of Makin and am moving an AS there to support. If they are severely damaged they will have to go back to PH anyway.

Hit end of Turn...

One of my subs took 3 hits with no return damage.
Tagged one of his subs with a dauntless DB.
Bad weather cancelled my LB attack on Ponape.

The troops designated for Tinian are loaded and I have combined them together and sent them to Eniwetok with orders not to unload. I feel like I am running behind now...

Maleolap converted over to Allied territory so I am diverting the 3rd MDB to take Rota. The TF is supported by 3CVE's following along with 7 DD's.

Diverting the cargo CS for makin to Eniwetok.

Diverting the 2nd USMC anphibious Tank BN, EAB forces & 3rd MDB to Eniwetok with a hold order.

Diverting Oiler to Eniwetok.

Set up Eniwetok with 4 squadrons of fighters (72) and 2 squadrons of DB (30) plus 2 PA groups.

Set up Roi-Namur with 2 fighter squadrons (42) and 3 squadrons of DB's (54) plust a recon group set to scan for incoming TF's from the Truk area.

End of Turn.

Is the computer game supposed to laugh after it calculates air superiority?? :P

One of my subs almost got torpedoed on the surface by the Japanese navy... That will teach them to sit around...

A Japanese Sub near PH took 6 hits from one of my ASW groups.

The main Tinian TF is still ENE of Johnston island enroute to eniwetok.

My main TF groups are just entering the masrhall islands area. It will probably be a week before the whole force is ready to leave the Eniwetok area and sail for Tinian.

Moving some Tractor battalions to Makin & Tarawa to aid in the re-loading of troops based there in the future.

Sending my DMS's to Eniwetok to aid in mine removal.

End of turn.

Bad weather is cancelling alot of patrols.

2 Japanese subs hit by patrolling aircraft around the marshall islands.

The 121st USN seabees are unloading on Ailinglaplap to improve the airfield.

more bad weather..

Got some more ships into pearl.

Moving the 27th Inf Div to Makin.

Fuel Convoy arrived at Tarawa. Support convoy of AS, AR & AGC ships arrived at Makin.

Meanhwile, back at the ranch....

Sending troop transports from Makin & Tarawa back to PH for refills.

Assigning 1 Fighter squadron in every TF to be at 5,000 feet to hopefully catch the lower flying planes in the future. The CVE's were not operationally damaged.

Ok, this is one of those big turns... Sending 3 Amphibious TF's to attack Rota and the main TF to attack Tinian. hopefully I didnt undershoot. Bombarding Tinian with both surface forces to soften it up. Most or all of the CVE's will be escorting the Rota assault while the main Air TF's will be backing up tinian. I am going to keep the bombers set to naval attack.

Well, the last turn went worse than I hoped but better than I feared.

The CVE coregidor has 60 flotation damage and will try to flounder back to Eniwetok and eventually PH. I am sending one of my CVE task forces to escort it away from the Marianas islands. Otherwise I am pretty sure it will not make it.

The 2nd USMC Amphibious brigade did not make landfall as expected yesterday. It should land on Rota this turn.

One of the TF's I sent along is a transport and not an amphibious TF and they are refusing to unload along with several cargo TF's, etc... We will see how it all shakes out. I am going to sit tight this turn and give my troops a bit of time to sort themselves out and get organized.

End of Turn

The DMS fleet located a minefield at Tinian and removed some or all of it.

Temp flotation failing aboard the CVE corregidor

The DMS fleet removed about 50 more mines around Tinian.

A cargo TF that was set to remain on station mysteriously decided to go home along with other parts of the invasion force. the good news is that the rest of it was not needed and I need to get some shipping out of the area before the japanese retaliate.

I am going to wait 1-2 more days and then pull the whole assault fleet back to eniwetok. Hopefully I will be able to capture Rota and/or Tinian with the forces I have already unloaded. However, I will re-assemble at Eniwetok for another run and hopefully a lopsided fight with the japanese air fleets.

It's going pretty good for your second scenario!

Several points:
- setting a sub to disband in port does NOT put it in pierside or shipyard repair. The crew still do the repair with perhaps a little help from port people, but no repair experts. You have to seen when it reaches port, then go in and specify the repair you want. If it has flooding damage, shipyard repair is generally needed and is fastest almost all the time.

- you took a lot of casualties at Rota from shore guns because you did not have anything to suppress them. It is usually best to embed an old BB or two, and/or a couple of CAs with the amphib force to duel with the shore guns and keep them ducking. Armored ships are best because they can take the odd hit and shrug it off.

- when you get around to bombarding the Naval Fortress at Saipan, do not do it with the Bombardment distance [just below the React setting] set to 0! Those guns will tear up even BBs and cause so much system damage they will be out of the game for the duration. Bombard from 10K yards [setting: 10] and you may take the odd hit but not devastating damage. Remember, at night and with poor radar, Japanese gunnery cannot see much to aim at until it is really close. After a week or two of bombing and bombarding, you must still have some embedded BBs/CAs in your Amphib force to suppress whatever guns from the fortress are still operating. Hopefully, supply losses to the Japanese will greatly reduce the amount of fire from the guns.

- speaking of supply, to ensure you get lots of supply on the ground for the troops on the first day of landing, create a separate Amphib TF of xAKs and load ONLY supply. Then merge it with the main amphib force. If you do not do this, the amphib forces unload each ship in the order: Troops, Light Equipment; Heavy Equipment, supply. Depending what is on board, it can take several days to get supply built up on the beaches.

- why did I advise merging amphib TFs? If you have three amphib TFs all hitting the same target at the same time, the shore batteries get to engage each one separately. Lots more shots and lots more chances for a ship to be hit.
Merge them into one, with embedded BBs/CAs, and the shore batteries get one go at the ships, with opposing fire from the escorts. You will notice the Combat Report shows more firing by the shore guns, but that is at the troops on the beaches, not at the ships.
No matter how bad a situation is, you can always make it worse. - Chris Hadfield : An Astronaut's Guide To Life On Earth

Setting the 102nd Combat Engineer Regiment, the 111th Regimental combat team, the 715th Amphib tank BN & the 193rd Tank Battalion to Shock attack on Tinian.

Because I have used almost no ordinance I am setting my Air combat bombers to Ground attack at Tinian.

I have most of my errors figured out. Troops and Cargo was not unloading because I had them in the wrong transport mode.

I am still unsure why the DMS fleet at Tinian decided to go commit suicide at Saipan to the north however. After a brief contemplation I am guessing it is likely they had their reaction set to something above 0.

Fingers crossed that experience and bravery help me get ahead in this battle.

End of Turn.

RE: The Marianas Islands newbie style

RE: subs. Yes, but at least they begin to do repairs until I remember to check on them and put them in drydock.

thx for the info on supression.

I dont know how you continue to re-arm BB's on this map so quickly with only 3 AE ships. I will find out though, they are nearly to Eniwetok to help with the rebound.

So far I can see that I could do 100% better in the first 4-5 crucial days of this scenario. Setting up and launching a direct attack on the Marianas would be preferrable now that I know the Japanese have a delay in showing up on the map. I am sure that having the amphib HQ miss out on the mission didnt help me much either.

there are many other minor things that I am fuzzing out on trying to push to get turns done. Lots of little stuff that a checklist might be really handy for in the future.

The plan now is to back off to eniwetok and gather enough troops to try to take Tinian. Hopefully there are some good battles with the Japanese fleet in the meantime.

Loading up more troops at PH, pulling everything back from Tinian.
