M4 81mm MMC

Post by tracer »

I'm using the US M4 81mm MMC SP-mortar in a PBEM taking place in 9/49 under H2H. In that game I'm unable to shift their fire; I get a 'shift outside of range' message (like you see with a squad mortar). I tested them in solo battles (various dates) and they behave normally. The battle I'm using them in is GE-SO (I'm the Germans) and allows use of the 'nations' button. Their orders are coming from GE FO's, but even if I have the MMC's order their own missions they still will not shift-fire. Any ideas why this is happening, or solutions?

TIA

Well, in my (somewhat limited)experience, assuming the guns are within range and in contact, the observing unit not being close enough to the impact area to actually conduct the adjustments sometimes can be a problem. Have you tried using different units nearer the target to adjust the fire?

Tracer, by any chance are you trying to fire at a range of less than 5, the minimum for indirect, IIRC? What happens when you try to shift in 7.1? Is this specific to H2H?

I've had the same thing happen from time to time, than on the next turn it would shift???!!! Doesn't happen enough to really effect the overall H2H game though

This is only happening in a current PBEM. When I try to re-create it thru testing the MMC's shift like they're supposed to....but in this battle they're behaving like squad mortars. Perhaps its being caused by some odd combination of forces brought about by use of the 'nations' button.

I get that a lot

Mostly with GE 81mm mortars, but also other calibers and nations; U.S, Chinese etc.

Does anyone know why?

In my case they have not been able to shift fire at all; I've tried every turn with no success.

That happens to me a lot, but only with mortars. It always happens w/ British 2 in. mortars and sometimes with the 3 in.

That's normal behavior for the 2" mortar...all squad mortars, like the GE 50mm and US 60mm, don't have the ability to shift-fire.

With all non-squad mortars I've always been able to shift their fire if the unit was in contact. Maybe I've just been lucky and haven't encountered this before.
