It looks like you and Damian both enjoy posting AARs. From the number of hits your AARs have it looks like a lot of people enjoy watching and learning from your AARs. It would be sad to see you both lose out on additional enjoyment from playing this game.

I think a mea culpa is necessary before anyone should think about letting someone off the hook for even an unintentional opsec violation. If someone can't even admit "my bad" for playing ironic morality police, then they do not deserve white knighting by others. Obviously, such breaches can be unintentional. But if they are unintentional, the culprit should own up and learn from it. That said, I'm generally of the opinion that pms about a game to a player with an aar are generally bad taste anyway. If the player can benefit from the advice or discussion, their aar can generally benefit as well.

Well, I thought I should update.... Damian and I have gotten another week under our belt... with the interregnum being marked by lack of net access etc. After some thought - and rather a lot of amazement at 2 things:
1. The fact that the person who broke OPSEC once again doesn't even get a pat on the wrist about what they did and
2. Email from them to me in which they refute that their email to CR in any way broke OPSEC ( a rather delusional ( insofar as it has no connection to reality and shows a real lack of insight ) and minority viewpoint )

I've decided that the thing that matters is that I trust Damian 100%. If someone tries to ruin the game by emailing him I trust him to do what's right and together we will work through it. It does severely limit the number of people I'd be willing to play in future which is a pity but such is life.

In terms of what has been happening. Well, subs have run rampant, major armies have clashed with thousands dead and injured on both sides near Moulmein, IJN raiders are raiding deep into my operational depth in Oz, the Pacific and Burma, Damian has gotten carriers into my convoy lanes again and dozens of fighters on both sides were downed as the IJNAF and IJAAF tested its ability to take control of the air over Burma back again. The Allies have embarked on a strategy which even I think is high risk in order to keep frontline formations in Burma etc in action and just yesterday we had yet another bout of surface action involving carriers. I think we are 1 to 2 days away from our first carrier battle also.

I'll begin with the monthly update later today and then bring you through the last week sequentially.

So, as of 21st November where are we in terms of score, troop losses etc?

Score:
In August the score was Japan: 30,651, Allies: 9,976. A ratio of 3.07 : 1 in favour of Japan. Auto-victory was a possibility.

In November the score is Japan: 37,667, Allies: 16,715. In the past 3 months Japan has gained 7,016 points while the Allies have gained 6196 points, a ratio of 1.13:1 in Japan's favour. Auto-victory is now utterly unattainable for Japan and a roughly 1:1 exchange rate for these 3 months is an extremely good result for the Allies.

Aerial Losses:
In August Japan had lost 3,064 planes to 3,500 Allied planes lost. Japan lost 0.88 planes for every Allied plane lost.

In November Japan had lost 5071 planes to 5297 Allied planes.

In the 3 months from August to November Japan lost 2007 planes to 1797 Allied planes. Japan therefore lost 1.12 planes for every Allied plane lost. This is, again, an extremely favourable turn-around for the Allies and has been achieved while withdrawing many of my squadrons to training in order to create a pilot training programme. The first fully trained graduates of this programme ( 70 Skill in their primary skill ) should graduate at the end of November.

Japanese losses and the impact of Allied airpower should increase significantly as I bring the full Allied airforce into play from January 1943.

Army Losses:
In August Japan had lost 805 points of ground forces while the Allies had lost 10,990. This was a ratio of 13.65 Allied losses per Japanese ground force point lost.

By November Japan had lost 1451 points of ground forces while the Allies had lost 13,700.

So in the three months from August Japan had lost 646 points of ground forces to 2710 points of ground forces. This is a ratio of 4.2:1. While this ratio isn't 1:1 or better it is still over 3 times better than the ratio which was being achieved prior to mid-August and this ratio has been achieved whilst transitioning over to several major strategic offensives which have achieved almost all their objectives. Most of the losses I have suffered have come to tank attack in China. I am responding by sending several AT Regts from Burma to China to help bolster the Chinese infantry vs tanks.

Naval losses:
In August the IJN had suffered the loss of 64 vessels worth 434 points while the Allied fleet had lost 532 vessels worth 7,551 points. The Japanese were achieving a 17.4 : 1 ratio in naval losses.

By November the IJN had lost 132 vessels worth 1260 points while the Allied fleet had lost 834 vessels worth 10,348 points.

Over the past three months the IJN had lost 826 naval points to 2797 Allied naval points. This represents a 3.4 : 1 kill ratio. Of course this could be better but:
a) It is already a fivefold improvement on the loss ratio before August and
b) It was achieved by only the damaged, unupgraded, scattered remnants of forces I had to throw together in emergency TFs with insufficient support. When I can begin meeting the IJN with repaired, upgraded TFs organised as I'd wish with appropriate logistical and aerial support this 3.4 : 1 ratio will improve even more significantly.

So, bottom line, Japanese losses have rocketed upwards with 40% of their aerial losses, 43% of their ground losses and 2/3rds of their naval losses occuring in the past 3 months ( versus the previous 9 months ). The RATE of loss has increased even more massively with the monthly loss RATE increasing as follows: air - more than tripled, ground - almost tripled, naval - more than sextupled.

Attacking the Japanese critical weakness:
The key to breaking Japan is to draw in and pin their army strategic reserves and increase the RATE of their aerial and ground losses to an unsustainable rate such that they cannot rebuild their strategic reserves. I believe that that is currently being achieved.

Over the next 3 months I'll open a new front in the DEI and seek additional significant attrition of the IJA in that region as I seek to increase IJA loss rates and ratios even further.

So, so far everything's going according to plan. My losses are being kept at a level which allows me to speedily rebuild my air force and navy. I have taken steps to ensure the British and Indians have the ability to sustain prolonged attritional combat and as Japan's loss rate increases and its forces shrink mine will only continue to grow stronger. So, the strategic plan's working nicely.

Hummmmm, was the identification of the dastardly perp ever revealed?  I'd like to scratch that person from my "to play" list.
 
I don't know about punishing persons that unintentionally breach opsec, but the Forum should develop and publish a policy on what will happen to persons deemed culpable of both intentional and unintentional breaches.  So much time and energy is invested in a game and AAR that there should be more than a verbal slap-about for messing with players. 
 
Why does this kind of stuff happen to you so much?  Perhaps it would help to write in a "delayed-reporting" fashion such as some AAR writers do.  By playing a couple of game weeks ahead of the AAR, opsec breaches would have a diminished effect.  Of course, writers such as you that like to discuss strategic decision-making in real time will still be vulnerable.  Maybe you should consider discussing strategy after the fact rather than going into it in detail before carrying it out.

Well the person who talked about OMGs in the main forum was, I believe, just being over-enthusiastic. As to the person who broke OPSEC in J3 vs Canoerebel. Yeah, if you want to know who that is PM me and I'll let you know so you can scratch them off your to play list.

As to why it happens to me so much. Well the majority of the time it has happened it has been due to a single person deciding to wreck the game ( FatR to be precise ). Pretty much all of the other OPSEC breaches have been unintentional but FatRs have been intentional and he has said he'll happily do it again. One reason I'd never play John III ever again is that he defended FatR at the time --- and also Symon ( aka JWE aka Osterhaut ) when he was using his Osterhaut alter ego to post racist and bigoted comments about Europeans etc.

Overall I had a think about it and just realised that so long as I didn't play people in that orbit ( FatR/JIII etc ) then I could trust them and it didn't matter what intentional breaches occured since I could rely on the person I was playing to be honourable about it. Like I said, I trust Damian 100%.

And now onto the game... Things have really gotten more interesting over the past week. But before I outline what has happened I'll answer the question i posed earlier about what the strategic reason to delay moving on Moulmein might be.

Basically by delaying moving on Moulmein I'm ensuring that:
1. The IJA forces from Darwin are largely redeployed to Moulmein as "just in time" reinforcements. The stress of getting stuff there "just in time" would, IMO, encourage over-commitment of forces to this blocking action.

2. My plan always was to defeat his forces piecemeal.
2a The first phase was to lure him forward into the area north of Moulmein, south of Pegu in the belief that using a second river crossing to damage my troops would be advantageous. Of course the problem with that is that they'd also not have the benefit of the forts in Moulmein. Once I saw he had 5 units committed forward I ordered my forces across the river from Pegu. Once across their job is to attrit whatever forces he has here such that they won't be able to materially add to the defence of Moulmein.

2b. Moulmein itself. BY hitting Moulmein slowly I'm hoping to lure the garrison forward ( see above ) BUT still hit it quickly enough that I begin writing down the forces there before his reserve from Darwin can enter the fray. My plan is simply to render his forces at Moulmein combat ineffective but allow them to be saved by his forces moving up from Darwin. If his forces in Moulmein are very weak then I am reserving the option of capturing it and carrying out the next phase further inland.

2c. As his Moulmein defenders are whittled down they will be reinforced by the reserve he has formed from the forces at Darwin. This reserve will then be sucked into the fighting at Moulmein or slightly inland from Moulmein.

This then pretty much removes the IJA forces he has freed up from Darwin.
3. So, over time, but a little slowly I intend to continue the CENPAC airborne thrust, taking islands and pushing up into the Saipan, Truk region. This will require the garrisoning of all of those islands as well as the use of sacrificial garrisons in the region I'm currently working through.

4. Pressure will be kept in the Aleutians with scouting missions and minor raids. This should encourage garrisoning of this region.

5. In the meantime I'm buying out US Army tank units and Australian tank and infantry units as rapidly as possible and prepping for some significant invasions in the DEI. The force he could use to stop me cold there is the force which is going to be rushed to Moulmein, sucked in and held close in attritional battle there.

So, the reason for moving slowly on Moulmein was to allow reserves to be sucked into a just in time rescue - making them unavailable in other regions as those escalated.

Not a badly co-ordinated raid if I say so myself. 132 bombers hit the target in a co-ordinated manner. Note, especially the presence of 4 different types of bombers. These bombers were flying from 2 different bases. Later 10 bombers from my main base attacked in an unco-ordinated manner. The B18 raid was never intended to co-ordinate so doesn't count. Overall that's better than 90% co-ordination from two different bases more than 5 hexes apart. That's quite acceptable co-ordination IMO.

The dive-bombers co-ordinate separately from the level bombers.... as is quite reasonable. Note however that they DO co-ordinate even though coming from different nations. Lots of shuffling of IJN forces into and out of the seas about 300 miles from Rangoon. I see multiple BBs, multiple CAs, CVs and subs... He has a LOT more than I have but I have the fear of not being able to replace his losses on mine... and that's a powerful advantage. I'm inviting him in since I'd be quite happy to trade 4 old BBs for 4 CAs at this stage. Damian won't take that until I start using those BBs to bombard Moulmein though ( about 10 days to 2 weeks from now ).

A lot of these raids are in the south of China and I have reports of multiple tank regiments no ship heading for southern China to launch a counter-offensive to retake southern China. I'm quite happy for this offensive to take place as it represents a waste of tank regiments IMO. In the meantime I'm using the Chinese bases to support a wolfpack between China and the Phillipines. This wolfpack comprises over 20 submarines and can be resupplied from my coastal Chinese bases ( the ones I captured with the costly offensive earlier ).

Yes, great to see this AAR is active again (and nice screenshot of the South Burma Airshow, quite the eclectic collection!). Interesting discussion on pulling his reserves into Moulmein, I remember you saying you were allowing him to withdraw his forces from Darwin several weeks back, but didn't connect the dots to this fight.

You were able to overcome low prep levels at Mili due to his troops probably having very high disruption (80 or higher) and in all likelihood little to no supply. The newer Beta patches have units with over 50 experience levels and already at 100 prep for a base switch over to a new enemy objective at either 25 or 33 which helps.

I'm still having a lot more squads destroyed BUT his disablements are rising rapidly and soon that means those disablements will be becoming destroyed.

I'm responding to these losses ( in Indian and British infantry squads - where I get 48 and 12 respectively per month --- or enough to replace about a day's worth of losses ) by disbanding any spare regiments and divisions I have in India.

Over the next 5 days I undertake a systematic policy of disbanding unnecessary units and when I'm through the number of British Infantry squads in reserve is over 100 while I have over 600 Indian Infantry squads. This will enable me to push the offensive for longer than Damian will expect - this should upset his calculations.

Enemy carrier elements are probing into my SLOCs between Pearl Harbour and Tabiteau. I estimate there are 2 CVs and 2 to 3 CVLs. I have 2 CVs and 3 CVEs and I believe that by virtue of my repair bases being closer AND the fact that I need to prevent him cutting Tabiteau off I can undertake this battle on fairly even terms.

What does even mean? It means that I'll lose less than 3 times what he loses. Ideally I'd like to lose only double what Damian loses but that'll be very difficult to pull off. So long as I keep my losses below triple his I'll be doing fine though. This is based on the loss ratio I've been inflicting since taking over.

The most important thing isn't sinking his CVs actually but just sending them back to the repair yards for a month so I can get enough supplies and xAPs into the Tabiteau/Tarawa area that I can push an amphibious landing through vs Maloelap ( or a surrounding base ). Once I have that then all of his holdings in the area except Eniwetok will be in range of dive-bombers and Avengers operating from dirt fields and it'll be over for him in that region.... I'll then shift the USN past Guadalcanal etc into Northern Oz and push north into the DEI in January 1943 with a view to taking Soerabaja and getting the fuel etc I need to power Oz without endless wasteful supply convoys.

Night Time Surface Combat, near Cocos Islands at 33,101, Range 10,000 Yards

I have no carriers or warships to spare so this Cocos Island operation is going ahead on a shoestring. It isn't enough really but I have to make the effort as Cocos is one of THE most crucial bases on the entire map, controlling the SLOC between OZ and India, and it wasn't occupied at all by my predecessor - this has cost me dozens of ships since I've taken over and delayed operations from Oz by at least 1 month.

TAKE and HOLD COCOS in your games no matter what. IT IS CRUCIAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm pretty prepared to trade a dozen ships and most of a division if I can put patrol planes on Cocos, and it'll be cheap at the cost. So far though it has only cost me 2 Bns of troops which is an absolute bargain.
