I finally folded and bought the Steel Wolves boardgame. I managed to get it for just over half price, mainly as something to do when I go down to the Falklands. Plenty of time to play a solitaire wargame whilst I wait for turns etc. Of course, I had to take it for a test run first [:D] After sinking 185,000 tons of shipping in September things have tailed off in October as the boats are now working their way through the dockyards. The result is a poor 8,000 tons sunk in the first two weeks of October [:(]

I can heartily recommend the Vassal module. Much less management of pieces of cardboard.

Like Steve EVER landed on an aircraft carrier! [8|] [:'(]

I'd bet he *might* have-as a passenger in a S3 Viking.

Nope. Never landed on a CV in anything. Never rode in an S-3. Or any military jet. Ever.

And never "flew" anything except a Cessna 150, a 172 or an R/C model. [:D]

Although several times they let me sit in the pilot seat of various P-3's and "pretended" to fly it. And all three times I "flew" the P-3 simulator I crashed. Once , doing "Dutch rolls", I lost control so badly that I barrel-rolled a P-3 into the river. [X(]

I had a friend who used to work at the "Viggen" simulator at the local Air Flotilla in my old hometown. Got to try "flying" it quite a few times [:D]

It was a really nice simulator in that it was mounted on a 3D rig making the cockpit move in all three dimensions, having pressure belts strapped all over you to simulate the G forces and of course having screens mounted everywhere so wherever you looked, you could see the "real" terrain outside. Was a real blast to "fly" [8D]

My friend told me that the real pilots had a deal with the simulator personnel that in case that they crashed during simulation, they had to buy a cake for the sim personnel. This was (of course) capitalized hugely on by the devious sim people ... as in the simulator, there was a button with the label "freeze altitude". This was then used when some poor unsuspecting pilot was coming in to land ... when he was some ~10 meters above the ground, the sim personnel pressed the "magic button". When the unsuspecting pilot then muttered "what the f**k" and pushed the stick forward enough, they instantly depressed the "freeze altitude" button making him crash into the runway much to everyones amusement ... [:D]

The sim personnel, of course, denied every accusation as to having the sim "rigged" and duly collected their cake [:'(]

ETA; In case you don't know the "Viggen", that's the predecessor to the "Gripen". Pic attached.

Hi all,
ORIGINAL: Chickenboy

You guys hear about the Brazilian soccer match? This was a regional match in Brazil (two Brazilian teams). Referree red cards a player. Player (offended) makes contact with / strikes the referree. Referree produces a knife (he'd apparently been armed throughout the match) and stabs the player to death on the field. [X(]

Crowd storms the field, grabs the referree and tie him to a post. He's stoned to death, quartered and beheaded. His head placed on a post in the middle of the field by the mob. Hory crap!

Three observations:

1. You Euro types need to study up on your mob violence and soccer hooliganism (I'm talking to you, Denmark). This is nauseatingly impressive hooliganism / mob rule.
2. The World Cup is where next year? Ugh. [:-]
3. Thank goodness we suck at soccer (well, our men, anyways) and are unlikely to challenge the Brazilians for the cup. How'd you like to be the ones to beat the Brazilians with this in the back of your mind? Yeesh...

[:-]

A productive morning well spent. Went to Josh's nursery picnic at the local castle (we've all got them over here in Europe). Not a bad way to spend some leave [8D]

Incoming! Moment Typhoon fighter jet flies so low at air display it forces onlookers to duck and run for cover

By Daily Mail UK

They'd positioned themselves to get the best possible view, but they probably didn't expect to end up quite so involved in the action.

Plane spotters watching an RAF display found themselves ducking and running for cover when a Typhoon fighter jet skimmed just a few feet above them.

The group had set up camp by a road outside the showground under the aircraft's landing path.

Video shows them admiring the multi-million jet as it prepares to touch down, but very soon realise it is getting a little too close for comfort.

Close shave: This is the moment a Typhoon fighter jet flies in so close it forces onlookers to duck:

Get down! Plane spotters watching an air show cower as a Typhoon jet flies just a few feet above them:

Image

Too close for comfort: The jet appears to come in at a much shallower angle than intended, but the RAF says it was a 'completely normal approach':

Image

Some who had climbed on ladders to get a better view inside the showground cowered down as the plane appeared to brush past the perimeter fence.

Others sprinted for their lives and dropped to the floor in terror as they were blasted by jet wash from the plane.

Footage of the incident was posted on YouTube by bobsurgranny, who said: 'Well this came as a shock, the rate of descent was so quick.

'Either very skilled or very lucky, you decide. I'm saying SKILL!'

The incident took place at the RAF Waddington Air Show last weekend.

The plane enthusiasts were not inside the showground, but had instead set up camp by an adjacent road under the flight path.

The RAF said there were clear warnings of the dangers posed in that area.
Duck! Typhoon fighter jet so low onlookers run for cover

Run for it! The jet skims over the heads of people trying to watch the RAF Waddington air show, some of whom climbed up ladders to see the action over the fence:

Phew! One person lies sprawled on the floor in a desperate bid to get out of the way as the jetwash fro the aircraft ruffles the boundary fence:

A spokesman for the RAF told MailOnline: 'The area concerned is directly under the flight path of the runway and has clear warnings and flashing traffic lights designed to ensure that the public stay clear.

‘The approach of the Typhoon to RAF Waddington was completely normal and within all normal parameters.

'Individuals placing themselves under the flight path of aircraft that operate hugely powerful jet engines should not be surprised if they experience jet wash, nevertheless, the RAF apologises for any inconvenience caused.'

He said there was no damage to the boundary fence or the aircraft.

More than 148,000 people visited the RAF Waddington Air Show last weekend to see displays from the Red Arrows, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and a variety of other international teams.

The event was so popular police reported six-mile tailbacks on the A1 at one point on Saturday.

You don't think that 'perfectly normal approach' was intentional, do you Leo? I suspect that every pilot in the world would have done the same thing, given the opportunity. [:D]
