I cleared a lot of mines in this hex last turn. The mine symbol is now gone. The 6 DMS will stick around another turn – just to make sure. Airfield service/runway damage is now nil while port damage is @ 44. Oscar-Ic now fly CAP as I’ve got air support for the base now.

I see 4 enemy subs and a mine field in the Strait of Malacca.
- I have the DD Numakaze running ASW patrol from NE of Singkap to Bangkalis and then to Tandjoengbalai.

Borneo
Airborne assault of Sampit, Borneo ordered today from Singkawang with the 1st Raiding Regiment.

I’m sweeping Palembang and flying airfield attacks with fighter-escorted MB groups. I also moved an air group of Nick FB to Singkawang. I’ll set them on low alt naval attack next turn and see if I can poach enemy ships in the Palembang hex.

Shock attack @ Rangoon was strong. I destroyed two of his units. Another Shock should do it – they’ve gotta be out of supplies or close to it (plus heavy disruption and hopefully a good morale loss).

I-30 assigned to patrol in the Bay of Bengal. Has a FP so I’m hoping I’ll gather some intel along with improved hunting of enemy TFs.

I’ve been hitting this stack for a while but with little damage noted. I’ve sent in a pair of recon air groups to see if that improves my success rate with A2G missions.

Hami 1500 supply and just set supply_required to zero. I have 3 LCU @ Urumchi that are low on supplies. I’m curious to see if the supplies push up the trail to the units that are 7 hexes away.
- Now Hami shows 0 supplies but the 3 LCU are supplied just above the requirements. I’ve ordered a Shock attack as I see only 1 enemy LCU now. The current AV of the three LCU = 294.

I’m using the 1st Raiding Sentai air group to transport the Yokosuka Assault SNLF from Kweiyang to Haiphong. I plan to use this unit in a drop-attack in Sumatra later.

I bought out 4 transport air groups and moved them to Nagasaki. They’ll make their way to Malaya or Haiphong soon.

I want to close Port Blair with a Naval Bombardment. Port Blair has mines.

What is the most effective method of clearing mines or avoiding them?

- Set my Bombardment range to the extreme and don't allow escorts to play?
- Add DMS to my Bombardment TF?
- Set a mine sweeper TF up and then have my Bombardment TF follow the sweepers?

Thoughts? In the past I just added sweepers and or PB to a Bombardment TF.

If there are CD guns embed with the bombardment TF and stand out to big gun range. If there are no CD guns send the minesweepers in first, set to remain if possible and then max range on the bombardment.

I had a patrol boat get spanked in the Java Sea by an old allied DD. I might make it to port but I don’t really have a warm-and-fuzzy.

Rangoon troops set to Shock Attack the abandoned allied amphibious assault forces left on the beach (I fat-fingered and had them set to D_Atk last turn).

Some of the troops packing for the train ride to Chiang Mai should be on the rails next turn. That route from Chaing Mai to Taung Gyi looks better than the roads I’ve been marching on in northern China. Hopefully supplies for these units will be less of a problem while they are on their road-march.

I spent about 30 minutes in pilot management. Point-and-click stuff. I dislike this part of the game.

Steve is Bombing Boela in the DEI and I've no fighter support so I'm sending TF74 from Japan to Boela with an air group of float fighters to provide CAP. I'm also expanding the airfield @ Boela - currently @ 08%

The 4th Cavalry took the brunt of the damage during the shock attack. The unit shows 1AV of strength with 34 Cav Squads, 4 AT guns gun crews, and 3 motorized support units disabled. This unit will stay @ Urumchi to regroup while the 1st Cavalry and the 2nd Indian Mixed Brigade follow the Chinese 303rd Brigade in hopes of catching it on the road as it retreats to Wasu.

Operation Back-door: The assault of Taung Gyi from the Thai road near Chiang Mai
- I've divided the 1st RTA Division into A/B/C with C Co staying @ Bangkok as a garrison unit and sending A & B companies to Chiang Mai as the kick-off location. A company has arrived and B is en route and at Uttaradit on this turn.
- The 12th division (449AV) from Singapore is on the rail to Chiang Mai and is currently east of Kuala Lumpur
- The 15th division (469AV) @ Singapore has just completed packing and will be on the rail next turn (5.2.42)

I had set the 7th Indian Tank Brigade to move to Bassein but had expected it to take the road that would have cut Bassein from resupply via Prome. Instead the 7th took a shortcut through Rangoon and across the river, which forced a shock attack. Although the unit disruption jumped up to 34 there was little damage to my tank brigade. This unit is on defense and I'm following after with the 5th and 6th Guards divisions (512 & 458AV)

I'm sending the 5th Amphibious Bde (153AV) & the 17th Independent Guards Regiment (135AV) to hex 55,51. I only see 1 enemy unit @ Prome (which might be just engineers since Steve is flying air groups from there). I'll recon the base. If intel shows light defense then I'll nail it and push him back.

I-168 fires a slew of fish @ an AKE near Canton Isle. All miss so he engages with his surface gun and scores a single hit. Later in the game one of Steve’s subs does something similar. It was really weird to see a bunch of torps fired and they all miss against a slow target. I confirmed all fish are gone so I’m sending it back for repair and more fish.

I lost a TK near Balikpapan.

I’ve got Port Blair shut down with 100% airfield damage. I see a BB and an AKE in port with the mouse-over. I can’t use torpedoes on a port attack with my Nell/Betty bombers. I score a few 250 kg hits.

A few Mavis discover an allied DD and AMC @ Oosthaven. I sink the AMC. Later in the afternoon I nab a xAP and a pair of xAK. No loss-of-troop message so I’m guessing troops are ashore. More for me to kill later. I'll see if I can nab a few more.

Steve is pounding Benkoelen (and has been for a few turns). I can’t get fighters over to that side of Sumatra yet…

I’ve been sending a lot of troops/supplies out to my islands in the pacific to build up bases. I clocked a BB near Nikunau a few turns back. Steve whined about my “magic Mavis.” I sortied about 30 PA with torps and got six hits (all on the BB New Mexico). A PA carries 2 torps so I’m guessing 3 of my 30 PA scored a hit. Hey – the allies got B-17s that won’t go down when I field 10:1 A6M2 against them and to add salt to the wound those Flying Forts will shoot down about 10% of my CAP…

I didn't ask if you consider this an issue. I'm not playing a historic game. I'm not playing a simulation either. I'm not even pitching a fit - I'm just saying that the allies have B-17 and lotsa other strong 4E AC I have to contend with. Japan has other options to whittle the allied heavy bombers. Everything has a cost.

The destroyer mine sweepers DMS Uruko & Teiko I sent to Sabang are sweeping the hex clear. They clear 60 mines.

A 3PB ASWTF near Toboali runs into a single ACM (I’m guessing a picket). My TF is on ASW and the ACM actively “attempts to evade combat.”

I catch Steve’s bombers on the ground @ Palembang. I’m guessing they are grounded as the hex shows heavy rain. Apparently no CAP either as my A6M2 sweeps turn up nothing. Also, a lot of AC damaged on the ground… He may have Palembang over-stacked… SBC-4 are at the base… Where did these come from? Things that make me go hmmmm. Maybe Steve has a carrier TF west of Sumatra and he un-assed his dive bombers?

I tap into some more of Steve’s BB @ Port Blair. All I have to throw @ her are the 250kg bombs. Paint burns if you get the steel hot enough. Results show it has heavy damage tho so I’m guessing it took a plastering earlier in the game when I had carrier operations going on. After the attack I no longer see the anchor symbol @ Port Blair. Maybe Steve has put in orders for a haul-ass mission to the Royal Sovereign? I’ll put more AC on Naval Search next turn as I feel sure I did not sink it.

I lost some G4M1 near Soerabaja as they went after enemy ships w/o escorts. Mine Sweeping @ Sabang complete after removing another 60+ mines

Some maneuvering of TFs in the Java Sea. SS Sturgeon finds my ACTF but gets pounded for sticking her nose in too close.

Night turns to day and an allied SCTF finds Akagi’s ACTF. My side goes bang-bang, Steve’s side goes bang-bang, and they do that for a while. The stinking Marblehead gets away with a few lite hits.

Later near Pamekasan an air group of Beasties escorted by 12 Hawks has a go @ the Akagi but my CAP makes short work of them. And then a flight of 12 B-17E fly a lo-level naval attack with 500 lb. eggs. They miss too. I think the 4E came from Palembang… Then come a pair of Banshee with 1000 lb. SAP. Those miss also.



Over by Wake the mighty RO-65 goes to surface action against the xAKL Kanlaon II. 1 shell hit and then the RO-65 breaks away do to low ammo.

My SCTF that hit Oosthaven goes through Merak and sinks a pair of AMC

Near Banjoewangi my AmphibTF finds a lone AMC. Both TFs avoid a conflict.

At Palembang I sweep and pound the base again. It shows 54% damage to the airfield. Mouse shows another 17 bombers still sitting there. I flew my FB over for an airfield attack @ 14k but they did next to nothing. I’ll try 6k next turn.

Near Rahaeng and near Chungking we dance litely, trading a little bit of this for that.

SB2U-3 aircraft from Canton (I think) attack my SCTF sitting @ Baker Isle. LRCAP from my nearby ACTF fend them off. I shoot down a pair. A single B-26 makes a go of it here also but it comes up short.

Steve goes after Dili airfield again. I don’t have anything there so I watch while he makes holes in the runway. Better he use them there then @ Soerabaja against my shipping.

I lose most of Akagi’s DB air group to CAP @ Soerabaja. They go after the CL Perth and wind up feeding the fish.

6.18.42 Movie
• Steve, the cheeky bastard, slipped mines into the port of Balikpapan. Fortunately I have a few AMc in port to remove them.

• The BB Hyuga SCTF out by Baker Isle gives the ground forces there a bit of a pounding and then heads for home port. I see the 1st and 3rd Marine Raider Battalions there. Those aren't para-units, are they?

• Steve sent a CA-led SCTF into Banjoewangi. I had broken off the CA Maya and three DD as a separate task force and placed them on patrol of the Banjoewangi hex. Steve's SCTF slipped past the Maya and rousted my amphibious TF. The Akagi ACTF is set to follow the amphibious TF. They are now back in the Java Sea… On the way out into the Java Sea the Akagi ACTF tangles with Steve's SCTF lead by the CA Australia. Bang-bang, bang-bang. I do him hard - he does my lite (I think due to low ammo on his part). The CL Marblehead gets a lite scratch, the CL Perth gets away with no pain, and the CA Australia & the APD Barker get spanked to the tune of heavy fires & damage.

• Throughout the movie there is sporadic sub/ASW combat. Steve taps into a PB near Langsa.

• I sweep Chungking, Palembang, Port Blair, & Soerabaja. Soerabaja is a stone-cold beeech. I broke through the CAP @ Soerabaja with Oscar-Ic.

• I pound Palembang some more. Steve is still flying air groups out of there set for Naval Attacks. There were two or three air groups that flew from Palembang but they wasted themselves on a small DD ASWTF I had near Singapore. It almost takes an act of god to bomb a DD, and today god was apparently disinclined to take part in that action.

• You gotta love FoW. I've killed or damaged about 250 AC @ Palembang over the last few days.

• I continue my ritualistic bombing of Bataan in the PI, Steve's Big-Stack near Tsuyung, and the 3 Chinese Corps units near Rahaeng. There's something powerful in regards to rituals.

• Steve tries his hand at some ritualistic bombing in China. Fortunately I have enough CAP at his targets to at least make the bombers miss.

• I have managed to move some of my Mavis into the theatre. They try for a pair of mine layers @ Palembang with expected results of nil. Later in the turn they find the burning hulls of the CA Australia & APD Baker and convert them into good allied ships. An air group of 25 Kates attacks the Marblehead & Perth loaded with bombs and has no success. I would note that the CL Marblehead is still pretty much untouched and within the area of Soerabaja… Have I mentioned how good I'd feel to sink that blighted ship? Just checking…

• Over by Roti a few B5N1 Kates sink the xAKL Lepus. Over by Mataram a few D3A1 sink the AMc Djember. These attacks come from ACTF Kaga that's slipping past Bima to come up the western side of Java.

• Banjoewangi falls to the 5th Division.

• I assault Chengtu and get 1:1 odds but forts are still @ level 2. I'm thinking I need to do another D_ATK to drop the forts a notch or two down B4 I can try a Shock attack.

I think I've got Steve (Bullwinkle) surrounded and I'm about to put on the squeeze. [;)]

Supplies @ my big-stack are almost at 2X... And as soon as I can resupply @ Chungtu I should be good for another D_ATK to take the forts down to 1 or 0. I'd like to route Steve's big-stack but not destroy it else those troops re-appear @ Chungking (which would suck).

2 Divisions plus support are in the first wave for Java.

I think catching Steve's 4E on the ground @ Palembang was a stroke of luck and I'm gunna make the most of it.

I'm only at page 24 with that pesky Bullwinkle's thread. Farther back with you (only read the first two pages so far).

Notes from 6.23.42:

The Battle of Bataan was just finished and I’m working to rebuild\repair the units after the extended combat. To that end I have Bataan, Clark, and Manila supplied well over the 2X supplies required for allowing units to recover\replace multiple squads if they are available. On the 22nd of June the stack of LCU @ Bataan had an Assault Value of 1,445 and on the 23rd the Assault Value for the stack is 1,467.

The 14th Army currently has the 48th Division and 65th Brigade as its two largest infantry units. I do have the ability to form the 16th Division from units within the 14th Army. To do that I need to:
1. Send the Miura Detachment currently @ Davao to Manila to for the 33rd Regiment.
2. Send the newly formed 33rd Regiment to Bataan to join the remaining units required to form the 16th Division.

Almost all of my units in the PI are from the 14th Army. What I’ll be doing is moving smaller units of the Southeastern Army to cover garrison requirements plus assault and clear those 12 bases in the PI that still fly the US flag.

I’ve formed MSTF129(1DMS) from Takao, Formosa with orders to remove the mines @ Bataan. I’ve set the reaction level to 0 and have selected a commander with good naval skills and low aggression. My desire is to form a cautious Mine Sweeping Task Force with a high chance for survival. MSTF129 should arrive @ Bataan by the end of turn 6.23.42.

2-Do List:
1. Rebuild LCU @ Bataan to full strength and create the 16th Division. Set FO=Palembang.

2. Send a Transport TF of 5 Aden Cargo Class xAK plus escort from Babeldaob to Davao to transport the Miura Detachment to Manila.

3. Send the 65th Bde @ Balikpapan to Butuan, Mindanao for an assault of Cagayan, Mindanao. There are plenty of ships @ Balikpapan to perform the transport operation.

4. Send the 8th Engineer Regiment currently attached to the SA and located @ Shanghai to Butuan, Mindanao.

5. @ Mindanao I need to move the 82nd Naval Guard unit & the III/4th Infantry Battalion from Malaybalay, to Davao. The 82nd can serve garrison detail for now while the III/4th INF Bn. Will be used later to form the 4th Infantry Regiment @ Singkawang.

6. Transfer 1st Raiding Regiment @ Sampit & the 2nd Raiding Regiment @ Ambon to Legaspi.

7. Move 70 aviation points of support to Legaspi.

8. Move 6 Transport air groups to Legaspi.
