Combat

An Allied ASW TF comprised of 2 DEs and 2 DDs located an IJN sub midway between Tori Shima and the Bonins and attacked it, claiming a hit. Another contact was detected, but it eluded an attack.

The SS Crevalle, 33 miles SE of Shanghai, hit a lone AP with 2 torpedoes that did heavy damage and set the vessel on fire.

The DD McCall eluded a spread of torpedoes fired from an IJN sub 159 miles S of Hong Kong.

A pair of IJN MSWs located a mine field at Teloekbetoeng and immediately commenced sweeping it.

About 88 miles NE of Camranh Bay the SS Barbero hit an unescorted AK with a torpedo causing it to sink. Later another AK was attacked and struck by 2 fish that killed it.

An IJN sub, 147 miles W of Bataan, hit the LCI-583 with 2 torpedoes destroying it.

Manila was raided by 43 X B-17E (1 downed, 8 damaged), 89 X B-24D (4 downed, 22 damaged) and 24 X P-38J (2 destroyed, 1 damaged). The Japanese threw 18 X Zeke, 14 X Jack and 11 X Tony at them. All of the Zekes, 10 Jacks and 3 Tonys (4 damaged) were shot down by the Lightnings. Then the bombers flew through the heavy and accurate AA fire. The airfield was heavily damaged, there were some secondary explosions reported, a George and 2 Franks were destroyed and casualties were heavy.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division absorbed moderate losses from 39 X A-26B and 4 X Kittyhawk III.

At Naga the IJA 16th Division was being covered by 4 X George and 8 X Frank when the unit was attacked by 39 X B-24J, 28 X B-25J (1 downed, 1 damaged) and 51 X P-38J (1 downed). All of the Japanese fighters were blasted from the sky and the troops sustained moderate casualties. Artillery fire from both sides caused no harm to befall the Allied troops and the Japanese had heavy losses.

The Allied ships 214 miles S of Hong Kong were attacked by 4 X Frances and they were all destroyed by the CAP of 21 X F4U-1D, 176 X F6F, 296 X FM-2 and 17 X F4F-4. A pair of Hellcats were damaged. Later 3 X Grace appeared and they too were splashed at the cost of a damaged Hellcat. Another try at the ships was made by 13 X Frances and they were all shot down and a Hellcat was damaged. Shortly on that raid's heels 38 X Judy, 16 X Zeke and 5 X Jack arrived to try and die. 17 Judys who fled lived to tell of the aborted attack that saw the Allied buzz saw down all of the other planes and only 1 Hellcat took damage.

About 55 miles S of Hong Kong 3 X Helen attacked the Allied ships and were destroyed by the CAP of 78 X F6F, 1 of which was damaged. Then 3 X Peggy tried to penetrate the CAP and were shot down and 4 Hellcats were damaged. Another 3 X Peggy appeared and met the same fate later and a Hellcat was damaged. Still trying and dieing the Japanese threw 12 X Judy and 40 X George into the fight. 3 Judys and 37 Georges were destroyed at the cost of 3 Hellcats lost and another damaged. The Japanese planes that survived did so only because they ran and the Allied CAP remained on station.

Weather permitting the Flying Deuces will sweep Manila again tomorrow. Stick is harboring high hopes and his flight leader has promised to swap positions with him when they get close to their target area. “Think of it as a reward for doing so well protecting me,” Stick was told.

Some of the Sea Bees are boarding ships that have completed unloading supplies at Tori Shima. Jim's outfit isn't one of them though. Sam extends his condolences for Jim's being stuck here. Jim tells him that it could always be worse.

Jay doesn't even flinch anymore when the Japanese attempt to shell his unit's positions as they never manage to fall on target. The guys have even taken to joking about it.

Truman is still seething about having this Operation Noose being a surprise to him and now he's sitting here being briefed on a new top secret weapon that's supposed to be able to destroy and entire city in the blink of an eye. He knew that he was kept on the sidelines, but to be so totally uninformed is shocking. This super weapon is considered ready for deployment, but he must decide if it is to be used or not. He never imagined that the office he now holds would be like this.

The US 5th Army entered Genoa.

Bremen was surrendered by the Germans.

Allied troops now line the Swiss border.

The US 3rd Army now holds Regensburg.

Combat

An ASW TF attacked a sub about 20 miles SE of Tori Shima, but no claims of any hits were made.

17 miles SE of Shanghai the SS Crevalle hit a PC with a torpedo that did heavy damage and caused fires, but the other 2 PCs present pounded the sub in return and the sub will be forever on patrol.

A Japanese TK was attacked 29 miles NW of Okinawa by the SS Flier who hit her target with 2 fish that did heavy damage and triggered fires. The escorts tried and failed to find their attacker.

Akita's oil facilities were bombed by 124 X B-29 (2 damaged), 6 X P-51D and 47 X P-38J for moderate damage.

Sapporo was raided by 34 X B-24D (4 damaged), 17 X P-51D and 24 X P-38J who did extremely light damage to the oil facilities.

Naga was hit by 91 X B-24J for moderately heavy airfield damage, some secondary explosions and light casualties. The artillery duels yielded no results for the Japanese, but they did sustain heavy casualties from the Allied shells.

At Tavoy the IJA 31st Division was pounced on by Mosquito FB.VI (1 damaged), B-25J (1 downed, 9 damaged) and 8 X Spitfire VI for moderate losses.

Manila had 3 Tonys up when a sweep of 40 F4U-1Ds arrived and shot them all down.

3 Bettys tried to attack the Allied ships 39 miles N of Taytay, but 10 Hellcats greeted them and shot them down. 1 Hellcat took damage.

The Allied warships 33 miles E of Naga came under attack from 22 X Betty and 4 X Helen. No Allied fighters managed to intercept the raid, but the warship's AA fire claimed 12 Bettys and all of the Helens. The BB Pennsylvania was struck by a torpedo. The BB has been detached from the bombardment TF and will now make for port with light systems damage, moderately light flooding and moderately light fires.

Ed watches from the bridge of his flagship, the BB Tennessee, as the BB Pennsylvania steams away. He has already issued orders for the ship to be returned to Pearl Harbor, once she can make the transit, where she will be properly repaired and refitted with her long overdue upgrades. Ed thinks that now it's not mines, but rather lurking subs and aircraft that present the threat to his Old Gals. He tells his staff to make an inquiry as to where their promised air cover was. An aide gets back to him later and he was told that there would be Corsairs over them tomorrow and the Pennsylvania would be covered too.

Stick dejectedly dropped off the wing of his Corsair shaking his head to the mechanic indicating that there will be no meatball painted on his plane. There was combat, but his opportunity to get a kill never presented itself as his flight arrived after the Japanese disappeared into the clouds to save themselves.

Jim stands overlooking the airfield when Sam arrives and says, “You still here? I thought you Sea Bees were leaving us. Still not you though?” Jim replied that his unit hasn't been issued orders to embark yet. “What cursed outfit are you with?” asks Sam and he's told the 100th Sea Bees. “Well have a seat, relax and enjoy the view,” Sam said. Jim flops down and Frankie finds a spot, lies down, rolls around and moans with pleasure.

Russian troops reached Alexanderplatz in Berlin.

Spandau fell to the Red Army.

The British announced that V2 casualties in Britain were 2,754 killed and 6,523 seriously injured.

Combat

An ASW attack on an IJN sub was made, but produced no results 94 miles S of Tori Shima. The Allied ships continued their hunt and later regained contact and this time around they claimed some hits. In the afternoon what was thought to be another sub was detected, but not attacked as the ships couldn't pin down it's location.

4 IJN PCs attacked the SS Blueback 86 miles N of Okinawa, giving her a real hammering.

A naval bombardment of Naga by the Old Gals did very light damage to the airstrip, light port damage, a couple of secondary explosions were observed (1 fuel) and casualties were very heavy. The IJA 16th Division was attacked by 9 X B-25J (8 damaged) and 9 X F4U-1D, but suffered no harm. The daily artillery exchanges produced the usual results, no harm to the Allies and heavy Japanese losses.

Allied troops landed at Lautem, taking extremely heavy losses.

Toyohara was raided by 10 X A-26B (1 damaged) and 15 X P-51D who produced light airfield damage, and very light casualties.

Nagoya was bombed by 136 X B-29 who ran into 14 X Tony, 13 X Frank and 5 X Randy. The bombers concentrated defensive fire downed 5 Tonys (4 damaged), 1 Frank (2 damaged) and 1 Randy (1 damaged), the flak was heavy and accurate. All told 4 Superforts were destroyed and 22 were damaged. The heavy industry was heavily damaged. After the raid a late arriving fighter sweep made up of 64 X P-51D attacked 2 X Oscar, 8 X Tony, 9 X Frank and 3 X Randy. All of the Japanese fighters were splashed.

Balikpapan was swept by 21 X P-51D who jumped 6 X Zeke and 2 X Tony. The Japanese pilots turned tail and ran for the clouds, but not before 2 Zekes and 2 Tonys were shot down.

A collective groan is heard when the guys discover that tomorrow they will be hitting Nagoya. Already the scuttlebutt has circulated that today's raid there cost the B-29s heavily. Gil is resigned to whatever will be will be as are the rest of the Lucky 11.

Ed worries about the fuel stocks and has his staff pressing for more. He's also thrown his weight directly into things and so far all he's gotten is sympathetic understanding and being told that the demands for fuel are straining the supply lines.

Slim sits with other noncoms and they wonder among themselves what's in the wind that they were relocated so soon and seeing the growing amount of shipping does nothing to allay their fears that the 2nd Marine Division is about to be thrown at the Japanese once again, but this time without adequate numbers of replacements and other goodies.

The Red Army is now a mere ½ mile from Hitler's bunker.

The British Army now controls Venice.

Italian partisans captured Mussolini, his mistress and 12 cabinet members. All of them were shot.

U-boats sank 8 Allied ships in the English Channel.

Canadian troops moved into Emden.

The US 7th Army took Augsburg and reached the Austrian border.

Hitler married Eva Braun and dictated his political testament.

Combat

A PBM Mariner attacked a sub 17 miles NW of the Bonin Group, claiming a hit.

A brief naval bombardment of Naga by the Old Gals before departing inflicted light casualties on the Japanese. The IJA 16th Division had very light losses from an attack made by 6 X B-25J and 15 X F4U-1D. The usual artillery exchanges did no harm to the Allies and heavy causalities were sustained by the Japanese.

Nagoya was swept by 45 X P-51D who encountered and destroyed 7 Franks, loosing 1 Mustang. 132 X B-29 followed and caused heavy damage to the heavy industry.

Nanning was the target for 73 X B-25J and 59 X P-38J while the Japanese tried to repel them with 7 X Zeke, 4 X Oscar, 3 X Tony and 17 X Frank. All of the Japanese fighters fought and died bravely while a Lightning was shot down and another took damage. The airfield took moderately heavy damage, there were some secondary explosions observed, 5 Helens, 4 Peggys and a Topsy were trashed and personnel losses were moderate.

Bangkok was blasted by 150 X Liberator VI (1 downed, 12 damaged) and 48 X B-24J (1 damaged) for very heavy airstrip damage, extremely heavy port damage, an extremely large number of secondary explosions, some of which were fuel, 21 X Topsy and 4 X Tabby were destroyed and there were very heavy casualties.

Gili Gili was raided by 11 X Liberator VI and 9 X Spitfire VIII resulting in a secondary explosion. The South Seas Det. was struck by 28 X A-26B, 9 X Mosquito FB.VI and 3 X Spitfire VIII for extremely heavy losses. The IJA 21st Division had the attention of 130 X A-26B, 39 X Mosquito FB.VI and 4 X Kittyhawk III costing the unit heavy casualties.

At Tavoy the IJA 37th Division was jumped by 25 X Mosquito FB.VI (1 downed, 3 damaged), 36 X B-25J (1 downed, 2 damaged) and 6 X Spitfire VIII who inflicted very light casualties on the unit. The IJA 31st Division was pelted with bombs by 10 X Mosquito FB.VI (1 damaged), 11 X B-25J (4 damaged) and 3 X Spitfire VIII for extremely light losses.

At Lautem the Allied troops assaulted the Japanese positions, sweeping them away, taking the base, destroying a Dinah and inflicting heavy Japanese casualties. The Japanese survivors are retreating towards Dili.

At Dadjangas and Cagayan troops are loading for deployment to continue the next phase of the so far failed Operation Noose.

Gil and the rest of the Lucky 11 have survived another exhausting mission over Japan. Nagoya has been hit hard, but they know without being told that they aren't done with that target.

Slim curses as no sooner than they arrived at Dadjangas they are boarding transports. So much for the promised rest and refit of the 2nd Marine Division. Where are they going?

Dave is sitting in the garage's makeshift office drinking some coffee from a thermos that Sandy brought him. He's reading a newspaper that somebody dropped off for him and in it a story catches his eye. LT D Baker is the Pacific's leading Allied ace with 41 confirmed kills. He's flying a Lightning for the 80th Fighter Group. He then moves on to another story about some guy fighting somewhere in Burma and Dave wonders why the US has troops there when it's an area for the British.

Mussolini's body and that of his mistress were hung upside down in Milan.

German forces in Italy signed a surrender.

The US 7th Army liberated Dachau and took Augsburg, reaching the Austrian border.

British troops crossed the Elbe.

French forces took Friedrichshafen.

Combat

A PBM Mariner attacked a sub about 15 miles NW of Vigan and reported scoring a hit.

The SS Flasher attacked an AK 76 miles E of Hue at dawn, striking the target with the deck gun 3 times and 2 torpedoes. The vessel was heavily damaged and on fire.

An ASW attack 21 miles N of Vigan by many Allied APDs scored a few hits on a sub. A little later 4 Allied DDs prosecuted an ASW attack, claiming some hits on the sub. Then another TF's escorts claimed to have hit a sub a couple of times. Another TF's escorts attacked a sub and claimed to have hit it. Then the APDs struck again claiming a few more hits on a sub. At the end of the day a kill was awarded for an IJN sub.

The SS Bluegill, 142 miles E of Sinkep Island, failed in her attack on an AK and a pair of MSWs.

The SS Plaice was attacked by 3 PCs 31 miles NW of the Amami Group. In the afternoon the PCs found the sub again and pounded her. With heavy systems damage and very serious flooding the sub will try for a friendly port.

At Laoag Allied troops poured ashore taking extremely heavy casualties.

Balikpapan was attacked by 21 X B-24J, 21 X P-51D and 72 X P-38J. The Lightnings were on a sweep and they were opposed by 8 X Zeke and 4 X Tony all of which were splashed while a Lightning took damage. The airfield was lightly damaged, a secondary explosion was claimed and personnel losses were light.

Naga's airstrip was bombed by 26 X B-24J who administered light damage and moderate casualties. Artillery exchanges left the Japanese with heavy losses and no harm was done to the Allied forces.

Manila was raided by 45 X B-17E (1 downed, 14 damaged), 84 X B-24D (2 downed, 11 damaged) and and 23 X P-38J (1 damaged). 7 X Zeke, 11 X George, 9 X Jack and 3 X Frank tried to turn the attack away at the cost of 7 Zekes, 4 Georges (3 damaged), 9 Jacks and 3 Franks destroyed. The airfield was subjected to very heavy damage, there were some secondary explosions seen, 3 Zekes, 3 Jacks and a George were trashed and troop losses were heavy.

Gili Gili was protected by the cloud cover from and Allied air raid. The the South Seas Det. was hit by Allied aircraft for extremely heavy casualties. The IJA 21st Division was struck by Allied planes for heavy losses.

Tomorrow a general assault on Laoag and landings at Aparri will take place. Then as more units are funneled in the squeeze on the Japanese will take place. The plan calls for the Japanese to ultimately be boxed in at Clark Field or Manila with the former location being the preferred location.

“Then take that damned location and build up a port or 2 there along with the airfields. I know that it doesn't have the ship yard that Hong Kong has, but we can bomb the hell out of Japan from there and choke of the shipping lanes.” With that Truman ends the meeting and the ball is now rolling for the second phase of Operation Noose as the focus in now on Formosa.

Slim is already fed up with the stench on board the transport and they haven't even set sail yet. The meals are hot and plentiful and for that he's thankful.

Gil got a letter from home that upset him because of his father's “health” problems. His sister is once again bemoaning the their father sits at home acting like the big man while his 2 daughters work. Gil shakes his head wondering what more he's supposed to do as the bulk of his pay already goes to his family. The bright side of his day was the 3 letters from Elaine.

The US 7th Army cleared Munich.

The French forces moved into Austria.

The US 1st Army met Russians troops at Ellenburg.

The British freed 20,000 from the Sandbostel camp.

The US 5th Army met French forces on the French/Italian border.

Combat

Allied troops continued unloading over beach at Laoag taking extremely heavy casualties. Allied forces attacked and captured the base.

The SS Stingray attacked an AK 33 miles S of Hong Kong just prior to sunrise hitting it 8 times with the deck gun and with 2 torpedoes. The vessel was sinking as the sub departed.

The landscape at Naga looks otherworldly as the artillery boomed again today. The Allies had light casualties and the Japanese losses were placed at very heavy.

Jay sits in the bottom of his hole, soaking wet as the rain continues to fall. The guys in his squad are so miserable that they're ready to attack the Japanese just to get out of their flooded holes. Jay has noticed that the weather plays a big role in if he sees planes or not and lately it's been only sporadic attacks in his area.

Red listens to reports on the radio and Cookie stops by and they listen to a news report together. The Germans have had it and they discuss how long it'll take to get troops into the PTO once the fighting in Europe is over.

Sandy took a hike after breakfast and had her lunch on a ledge overlooking a valley. The view was stupendous and she finds herself wishing Bill was there to share it with her. If the news is right the Japanese will be collapsing in the not to distant future, especially with the Germans on the brink.

2 IJN MSWs were sweeping the mine field at Teloekbetoeng.

Allied escorts conducted an ASW attack 23 miles NW of the Bonin Group on a sub, claiming a very large number of hits.

214 miles S of Saigon the SS Sterlet tried to attack an AK and 2 MSWs, but failed to get into position from which to launch the attack.

Takamatsu's heavy industry was targeted by 226 X B-29 and the Japanese were caught with their pants down. The AA fire was light and inaccurate as only 4 Superforts were damaged. The target was extremely heavily damaged.

Akita was raided by 35 X B-29 (2 damaged) who hit the oil facilities lightly.

Toyohara was hit by 9 X A-26B (1 damaged), 4 X P-51D and 5 X P-38J for very light airfield damage, a secondary explosion and negligible casualties.

Asahigawa was hit by 90 X B-29, 64 X B-24D, 16 X P-51D and 50 X P-38J who dished out heavy damage to the Mitsubishi engine works.

Victoria Point was struck by 141 X Liberator VI (1 damaged) and 36 X B-24J for extremely heavy airfield damage, a very large number of secondary explosions were reported and personnel losses were heavy.

Naga's airfield was bombed by 28 X B-24J (2 damaged) resulting in light damage being done, some secondary explosions were observed and casualties were very light. The IJA 16th Division was attacked by 11 X B-25J who lost a plane and had 4 others damaged by ground fire. No ordinance struck the desired area. The IJA 103rd Division had extremely light losses from 6 X B-25J Mitchell (6 damaged) and 21 X F4U-1D. The IJA 103rd Division was hit by 15 X B-25J for light casualties. The Allies had very light losses while the Japanese had heavy casualties from the artillery duels.

Laoag was visited by 9 X Irving who ran afoul of the 58 X F6F. All of the Irvings were shot down and a Hellcat was destroyed.

Gili Gili was raided by 10 X Liberator VI and 9 X Spitfire VIII for light port damage. The South Seas Det. Took heavy losses from 30 X Mosquito FB.VI, 62 X A-26B and 3 X Kittyhawk III. The IJA 21st Division had heavy casualties from an attack on it made by 18 X Mosquito FB.VI, 75 X A-26B, 1 X Kittyhawk III and 3 X Spitfire VIII.

At Tavoy the IJA 37th Division absorbed moderate casualties from 35 X Mosquito FB.VI, 15 X B-25J (4 damaged) and 9 X Spitfire VIII. The IJA 31st Division had moderately heavy losses from 12 X Mosquito FB.VI, 27 X B-25J Mitchell (7 damaged) and 9 X Thunderbolt II.

The Allied ships 15 miles NW of San Marcelino were attacked by 11 X Betty and 15 X Tony. 3 Bettys were downed by the AA, but an LCI was hit by a torpedo, sinking it.

The Allied ships near Laoag were attacked by 3 X Betty, all of whom were destroyed by the CAP of 65 Hellcats, 1 of which took damage. Another 4 Bettys tried and died as another Hellcat was damaged. Later 42 X Betty, 4 X Frances, 43 X Helen, 10 X George and 8 X Frank attempted to penetrate the Allied CAP. All but 2 Bettys were shot down at the cost of 2 Hellcats (17 damaged) destroyed and 2 Wildcats damaged. The 2 remaining Bettys then dove on an AP that was struck by one of them, a Kamikaze.

Stalin especially enjoyed yesterday's May Day, but he's still very disappointed that Hitler escaped his grasp. He wants to attack the Japanese, but has held back his forces even though he believes that the IJA is no match for his tanks and planes. To date he's been content with what he's obtained by the pen and the sword is always an option that he can exercise later. For now he's focused on grabbing as much as he can in Europe before moving troops to the East.

Elaine read an article about Labor Day celebrates an event that happened in the United States on the 1st of May. This makes her wonder why the rest of the world celebrates the day on the 1st, but the US uses a date in September. She is generally distrustful of the establishment and all her life she was taught at home to question things. Later Elaine and her sister take a walk to the ice cream parlor near their house and decide to take in a movie also.

Sam still wonders if the division is going to ride out the war here on Tori Shima. The Japanese seem to have no plans to retake the rock despite the Mustangs roaring in and out of the airstrip all day long. He supposes that the USN is just to powerful and that the war has moved on and left them behind.

The Allied ships 19 miles N of Laoag were attacked by 2 Bettys, both splashed by the CAP, and 2 Hellcats were damaged.

Berlin was surrendered by the Germans after 2 weeks of fighting. The Red Army sustained over 300,000 casualties and took 480,000 POWs. German casualties were unknown.

Combat

A Helldiver attacked a sub 141 miles SE of Okinawa, claiming a hit.

The SS Bluegill attacked a heavily escorted TK about 137 miles E of Sinkep Island and hit it with 2 torpedoes. The target was listing to port and on fire as the sub made good her escape from the PG and 6 PCs that were hunting her. An hour later the Bluegill fed another fish to the same tanker as it was unprotected, but still afloat. She ran before any surface craft appeared.

Toyohara was raided by 9 X A-26B (1 downed, 1 damaged) and 14 X P-51D who did very light damage to the airfield and a secondary explosion.

Naga was attacked by 27 X B-24J and the base sustained light airfield damage, a couple of secondary explosions and very light casualties. The IJA 103rd Division was hit twice by Allied planes for moderate losses. Artillery exchanges left the Allies with light casualties and the Japanese had very heavy casualties.

Red and Cookie draft a letter to their lawyer in Honolulu and once they're done Cookie says, “No matter what we can't be worse off that we were before this whole thing of buying land started. I don't see how we can't end up smelling like roses. The only thing we stopped him from doing without our approval is selling property. He can buy using what we already own as collateral with the bank.” Red grins and nods as he tosses a scrap of meat to Lucky who catches it in mid air and gulps it down in a flash.

Sam's squad returned from a patrol and now the guys head off for some chow. Sam takes the time to relax and write a letter home to his folks. Frankie lays across Sam's feet and moans with pleasure.

Gil, Gel, Hoppy, Landy, Donny and Brownie have managed to obtain some beers and they take a walk to one of the few spots where they think they won't be bothered and open some of the cans and begin to make them empty with a gusto. Gil never liked beer, but he's developed the taste and enjoys his though cold would've been better than warm. The guys shoot the breeze about home, their girls, what they plan for after the war, but never a mention of flying missions.

Truman listens to Admiral King and General Marshall and authorizes the shift of the units as requested. “If that pompous. self serving pain in the behind doesn't like it tell him I approved it,” he said after things were wrapped up. There's no love for Mac in the White House lately.

German envoys met with Montgomery to discuss peace.

German civilians and troops poured to the West in an effort to avoid the Russians.

Combat

The SS Flasher, 33 miles S of Camranh Bay, attacked and hit an AK with 2 torpedoes that caused heavy damage and fires despite the 2 MSWs escorting it. The SS Flounder was nearby and attacked another AK that was being escorted by 2 MSWs. The target was struck by 3 fish and sank almost immediately.

Toyohara was hit by 11 X A-26B, 40 X P-47D and 29 X P-38J for light airfield damage and very light casualties.

Sapporo was bombed by 60 X B-24D (13 damaged), 15 X P-51D and 4 X P-38J resulting in some hits on the oil facilities.

Naga's airfield was targeted by 49 X B-24J and it sustained moderate damage, many secondary explosions and very light personnel losses. The IJA 16th Division was bombed by 7 X B-25J and 13 X P-38J for very light casualties. The IJA 103rd Division had moderate losses from Allied aircraft and 12 Mitchells took damage. Artillery exchanges did no harm to the Allied forces and inflicted moderately heavy casualties on the Japanese.

Gili Gili was attacked by 14 X Liberator VI and 9 X Spitfire VIII for no damage. The South Seas Det. Was jumped by Allied planes for very heavy casualties.

At Tavoy the IJA 128th Ind. Mixed Brigade had no losses from an Allied air strike and 5X Mosquito FB.VI were damaged.

Chris score a kill while on CAP duty. He scored the rarest of kills, a snooper. The thrill has gone out of shooting down an enemy plane and has been replaced by a cold efficiency. All Chris wants to do is have the war end so he can go home and the best way he can figure to do this is through him doing his job as best as he can.

Stick continues to fly CAPs and nothing comes his way. He figures that by now he's one of the most experienced pilots in the Marines not to have a kill to his credit.

Jay spent last night plagued by insects as he fought off sleep while he was manning a listening post. Every little sound that was out of the ordinary scare him half to death. He was convinced a few times that the Japanese were crawling up to his position and now his back and neck are sore from being tense for so long. At least he won't draw that duty again for a while, unless he manages to get himself in trouble with the sarge.

All of the German forces in Holland, NW Germany, and Denmark surrendered.

Donitz ordered all U-boats to cease offensive operations and to return to base.

An IJN sub tried to attack 5 Allied DDs 15 miles N of Aparri and got pounded for many hits instead.

Allied troops unloaded over beach at Koepang taking extremely heavy casualties.

Clark Field was swept by 57 X P-38J who bounced 27 X Zeke, 6 X George, 11 X Jack, 6 X Tojo, 18 X Tony and 16 X Frank. 11 Lightnings were lost and 6 damaged in the furious battle and they shot down 6 Zekes (1 damaged), 2 Georges, 3 Jacks (1 damaged), 4 Tojos, 18 Tonys and 7 Franks (1 damaged). Another sweep of 21 X F4U-1D arrived a short while later and fought with 7 X Zeke, 7 X Jack, 2 X Tojo and 8 X Frank. 3 Zekes, 7 Jacks, 1 Tojo and 8 Franks were splashed at no cost to the Corsairs. A little later the Japanese had reestablished a CAP of 5 Zekes, a Tojo and a Frank in time to face 107 X B-24J and 34 X P-38J. All of the Japanese planes were dispatched by the Lightnings who sustained a single damaged plane and the bombers only had to face the AA fire which damaged 24 of them. The airfield was moderately damaged, there were a few secondary explosions seen, 3 Zekes, 1 Tojo, 2 Franks, 5 Jacks, 7 Bettys, 2 Georges, 2 Frances, 1 Tony, 1 Helen, 5 Myrts and 1 Irving were destroyed on the ground and personnel losses were heavy. Then another raid of 38 X B-24D and 50 X B-24J arrived. A lone Zeke was up and the bombers destroyed it while the flak damaged 1 B-24D and 7 B-24Js. The bombs hit the airfield for heavy damage, some secondary explosions were seen, 5 Zekes, 3 Myrts, 4 Tonys, 6 Bettys, 2 Franks, 5 Jacks, 4 Dinahs, 1 Frances, 2 Georges and a Tojo were trashed and casualties were heavy.

The Allied CVTF 82 miles E of Tainan was attacked by 37 X Judy, 9 X Zeke and 7 X Jack. All but 16 of the Judys were destroyed by 49 Hellcats and 18 Corsairs with the survivors turning tail and running.

The SS Flasher, 26 miles S of Camranh Bay, tried and failed to attack a TK and 4 DDs.

At Naga the usual artillery exchanges produced the usual results of no Allied losses and heavy Japanese casualties.

Stick flew his 100th mission today and though the sweep produced some kills for his squadron he still has a big, fat 0 for his kill total. Nobody says anything about their kills with him around. He's not the only pilot in the Flying Deuces with no kills, but he is the only one obsessed by it.

Jay's uniform is literally rotting off of him. He spent today pleading with the sarge for new pants. When he was told to pipe down Jay said that he'd pull guard duties without clothes at this rate. That drew hoots and whistles from the other guys who are in the same sorry state of dress.

Pete and Sylvia took a stroll in the park this morning with Pearl, Jack and Milt. Pete can't get over how things have quieted down after the Japanese were pushed back. He's heard that troops have been pulled out of their forward positions and sent off elsewhere because the front has moved so far away. The Japanese still are dug in deeply in the Dutch colonies, or so the newspaper says.

Breslau surrendered after an 82 day siege. 40,000 German POWs were taken.

The AA fire was heavy and accurate as it downed 1 Mosquito FB.VI (5 damaged) and 3 B-25Js (26 damaged). There were a pair of secondary explosions (1 fuel) and personnel losses were moderate. The Japanese put another 4 Zekes up in time to be slaughtered by 145 X Liberator VI, 48 X B-24J, 34 X Mosquito FB.VI, 60 X B-25J and 67 X P-47D. The airfield was very heavily damaged, the port took extremely heavy damage, there were numerous secondary explosions observed (some of which were fuel), 13 Zekes, 5 Georges, 19 Topsys, 6 Tabbys and 2 Tonys were destroyed on the ground and casualties were very heavy. 1 Liberator VI (18 damaged), 1 Mitchell (7 damaged) and a Thunderbolt were shot down in addition to a Mosquito FB.VI and 2 B-24Js being damaged.

Naga was struck by 20 X B-17E, 45 X B-24D, and 78 X P-38J for moderate airstrip damage, light port damage, many secondary explosions were claimed and troop losses were placed at moderate. Another raid followed as 29 X B-24J and 37 X P-38J went about their deadly business. Moderate damage was done to the airfield and there were some secondary explosions reported. Then 50 X B-24J hit for moderate damage to the airfield and some secondary explosions. The IJA 16th Division was jumped by 11 X B-25J (2 damaged) for light casualties. The IJA 103rd Division was pounced on by 4 X B-25J (1 downed, 1 damaged) and 18 X P-38J whose ordinance did no harm. The Japanese artillery was ineffective while the Allied barrages inflicted heavy losses on the Japanese.

The Palawan has completed unloading her cargo at Laoag and has been assigned to another convoy for the trip back to wherever they're destined for. Red and Cookie are relaxing, having a smoke, as they watch the fighters roar in and out of the airstrip in the area. They are busily discussing the reports of increasing Japanese sub activity in the area and wonder if they'll make it out of here in one piece. “I was torpedoed once in this war and I went into the water. I don't want to do that ever again,” says Red. He's thinking of watching sharks feeding on garbage tossed overboard whenever it's allowed. He's even joked with Cookie that the sharks get all of the good stuff and the trash is for the crew.

Sam absently tosses a stick, which Frankie goes off after. Somehow he's managed to survive the fighting in this war, but now the boredom is doing the killing. The men erupt and small things and fights break out despite the officers trying to maintain discipline. The hope of another unit taking over here is rapidly fading. What isn't known by Sam is that units now engaged in Operation Noose are earmarked to take over the garrisoning of various islands close to Japan. As the Japanese Navy dwindles in strength it is hoped that RCTs can replace the divisions so that the larger units can be used for combat.

The scattered German resistance against the Red Army will be stamped out by the end of the month.

The Germans in Norway surrendered.

General Jodl signed Germany's unconditional surrender.

Combat

A Helldiver attacked a sub near Laoag and reported hitting it. A little later and nearby another Helldiver attacked a sub and claimed a hit.

A Dauntless attacked a sub 51 miles E of Batan Island and observed a hit on it.

Allied troops continued unloading over beach at Koepang taking moderate casualties. The Allied ships unloading at Koepang were attacked by 24 X Frances, 1 of which was damaged by the flak. No ships were hit. An assault took the base with the Japanese absorbing moderate losses and retreating towards Dili.

About 82 miles SE of Saigon the SS Sterlet found and attacked an unescorted TK. A torpedo struck the target causing a fire to break out. Later on the SS Sterlet attacked 2 AKs 49 miles SE of Saigon and hit an one of them with a torpedo that caused a fire. The 5 MSWs that were escorting the ships tried in vain to locate their tormentor. In the evening 4 AKs and 5 X MSW were futilely attacked by the SS Sterlet.

The SS Redfish, 136 miles SW of Saigon, attacked a TK being escorted by 4 DDs. She hit her target with a torpedo that triggered a fire and then the escorts found the sub and attacked her. After shaking the escorts the Redfish tried to get into position for another attack, but failed to do so.

Tavoy was raided by 44 X Mosquito FB.VI (1 downed, 3 damaged) and 11 X Thunderbolt II who hit the port for moderately light damage, there were some secondary explosions a few of which were fuel and personnel losses were light.

Bangkok was bombed by 123 X Liberator VI (1 downed, 12 damaged) and 50 X B-25J (7 damaged) who caused very heavy damage to the airfield, moderate port damage, there were many secondary explosions one of which was fuel, 7 Topsys, 1 Tabby, 1 Zeke and 1 Jack were destroyed and casualties were heavy.

Kendari was struck by 30 X B-24J (1 downed, 6 damaged) and 64 X P-38J for light damage to the airstrip, a few secondary explosions were reported, 2 Idas were destroyed and troop losses were very light.

Naga's airfield was hit by 20 X B-24J (1 damaged) and 35 X P-38J for extremely light damage, there were some secondary explosions claimed and losses were placed at extremely light. Another raid was made by 30 X B-24J (1 damaged) who added light damage to the airfield and a couple of secondary explosions. The IJA16th Division was struck by 14 X B-25J and sustained light casualties. The IJA 103rd Division was the target for 11 X B-25J and it took extremely light losses. The Japanese had moderate losses from the Allied artillery and the Japanese guns failed to harm the Allied forces.

Clark Field was attacked by 44 X B-17E (9 damaged), 93 X B-24D (1 downed, 5 damaged) and 93 X P-38J (11 shot down, 1 damaged). 11 X Zeke, 6 X George, 7 X Jack, 1 X Tojo, 10 X Tony and 6 X Frank were fended off by the Lightnings who splashed all but a Tony who survived the fight. The AA fire was heavy and moderately accurate, but the bombers dumped their loads doing very heavy damage to the airfield, triggering a few secondary explosions 3 Zekes, 6 Georges, 9 Jacks, 15 Bettys, 3 Frances, 11 Dinahs, 5 Myrts and 6 Tonys were left smoldering wrecks and casualties were heavy.

At Gili Gili the South Seas Det. Was jumped by 42 X Mosquito FB.VI, 39 X A-26B Invader and 4 X Kittyhawk III for heavy losses. Then the IJA 21st Division had it's turn care of 6 X Mosquito FB.VI, 16 X A-26B and 9 X Spitfire VIII and absorbed moderate casualties.

Truman takes a drink to celebrate Germany's defeat and was heard to mutter that now it's time to end things with Japan.

Churchill sighs and says that now their duty is to restore the Empire. He and his nation are exhausted by the long and costly war, but the Japanese still hold part of the British Empire and it must be restored.

Bill reads the message and says, “Pass the word that we're still very much at war with Japan so I expect each and every man to continue to do his duty.”

Elaine and her sister are overjoyed that the Germans have finally given up. Now they expect their brother to come home. Their father cautions them saying that it will take time once the troops start being transported and that there was still a little matter of beating Japan.

Combat

In the Laoag area naval patrol planes reported many sub sightings throughout the day. Many attacks were made, some hits were claimed and oil slicks were observed. Later a kill was given for a sub after a debris field was reported.

The SS Flasher was attacked by 2 PGs and a PC 78 miles E of Saigon.

The SS Thornback, 83 miles NW of Singkawang, attacked a TK and hit it with a torpedo that caused heavy damage and started fires. The 7 PCs in escort then attacked the sub. Later in the day the Thornback hit another TK with a torpedo that triggered a fire and then the 5 escorting PCs hammered away at the sub. Despite their best efforts they couldn't evade the Japanese and the sub's pressure hull was ripped open and there were no survivors.

The SS Sterlet found and attacked a lone TK 20 miles S of Saigon scoring a torpedo hit that inflicted heavy damage and triggered a fire.

Niigata was attacked by 41 X B-24D (5 damaged) and 24 X P-51D who did some damage to the Nakajimaengine factory.

Osaka/Kobe was swept by 125 X P-51D who bounced the 41 Zeke, 35 X George, 12 X Jack, 5 X Zero, 6 X Oscar and 4 X Randy. In the ensuing wild melee a Jack managed to survive while 11 Mustangs were destroyed and 4 damaged. The Jack spotted 135 X B-29 coming and hightailed it back to base. The AA fire damaged 14 of the bombers who hit the heavy industry for moderately heavy damage. Another strike of 134 X B-29 arrived and flak damaged 24 of them while they managed to pound the Nakajima engine facility for moderate damage. Another wave of 228 X B-29 then braved the ground fire which damaged 14 of the big birds. They hit the heavy industry for very heavy damage.

Victoria Point's port was raided by 46 X Mosquito FB.VI (4 damaged) who caused moderate damage, triggered many secondary explosions two of which were fuel and casualties were moderate.

Naga had it's airstrip take moderate damage from 46 X B-24J. A secondary explosion was seen and personnel losses were very light. The IJA 16th Division was struck for heavy casualties care of Allied aircraft. The IJA 103rd Division was attacked, but the bombs fell of target sparing the unit any harm. The unit was attacked again later on had had heavy losses this time around. The artillery exchanged raged throughout the day with the Japanese taking heavy casualties and the Allies sustained no harm.

At Gili Gili the South Seas Det. had heavy casualties from an air raid.

Ed sits in his cabin on the BB Maryland as his bombardment TF of 8 of the Old Gals prepares to visit Naga once again. He wonders about fuel availability, mines, subs, planes and the mysteriously absent IJN. He sighs, rubs his temples and tries to get a bit of sleep.

LCDR Wothington is on the bridge of the DD Benham looking over the ships of the TF that will hopefully make life hell for the Japanese at Naga. The enormous size of the BBs dwarfs his tin can, but he wouldn't trade the Benham for one of those plodding behemoths.

Frank is on the bridge of the DD O'Bannon as they weigh anchor as part of a SAG that will attempt to disrupt the flow of Japanese ships through the South China Sea. There was no promise of air cover once they are in open water and he has doubts about being placed under a French TF commander. The BB Richelieu, CA Wichita, CL Phoenix and 6 DDs make up this force.

Cookie is busy getting ready to feed the crew while his assistant nervously keeps asking him about why they don't seem to be in any hurry to get out of this area. Cookie patiently tells him that the Navy brass doesn't consult with him so he doesn't dwell on crap that he can't control. Silently Cookie is wondering the same thing that's driving the man nuts. Then mercifully Lucky appears and Cookie says,”Well if it isn't super nose come looking for a handout.”

Jay and his buddy are having a heated debate in their hole. “With Germany beaten I get a warm feeling just thinking of all of those wonderful divisions arriving here soon and helping us to crush the Japs,” the guy says. “I'm not so sure about that,” says Jay as he wonders how long it'll take to assemble the ships, rest, reorganize and transport the troops half way around the world.

The German garrisons on the Channel Islands agreed to surrender.

Combat

Near Laoag a Mitchell attacked a sub , claiming a hit. A couple of hours later another B-25 spotted and attacked a sub in the same area, also claiming a hit. At around noon a Dauntless attacked a sub nearby and they too said they had scored a hit. An hour after that a Helldiver got in on the act at claimed a hit on a sub. A TBM claimed to have spotted an oil slick in the area. Many sub sightings and attacks were made in this general area throughout the day with even the Seagulls and Kingfishers getting in on the act. It was assumed to have been multiple subs spotted. An intel officer at HQs was heard to have said that if he had a dollar for every plane that submitted a sighting report he'd be a rich man and another officer there commented that if all the hit reports were to believed the IJN has to have lost the use of lots of subs today. 3 kills were awarded for the shared efforts of the airmen of the Navy and Army.

A Helldiver spotted an AK about 91 miles W of Hong Kong and claimed a hit.

The SS Sealion intercepted a lone AK and hit it with a torpedo that started a fire 29 miles SE of Saigon.

Rabaul was raided by 9 X Liberator VI who accounted for very light airfield damage.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division had light casualties from an air raid.

At Naga the IJA 16th Division damaged a Mitchell as the planes missed their target. Another attack on the unit produced moderate losses. The IJA 103rd Division was unharmed by an air strike, but then another raid hit the unit for moderate casualties. Japanese artillery made noise, but accomplished nothing and the Allied artillery inflicted heavy losses on the Japanese.

Tomorrow the Kiwis will assault Batan Island with 1 brigade. It is hoped that this will be enough versus the expected light opposition of what is assumed to be only support troops.

“So the Chinese are returning to their bases without so much as firing a shot?” asks Harry and General Marshall nods to the affirmative and added that they were late to move and now are retiring with Japanese recon planes watching them. “So much for that grand phase of Operation Noose,” says the President.

Jay happily wonders how the Japanese can be so ineffectual with their artillery. The guys in the squad have had a heated debate and it went all the way to the absurd for reasons until one of the guys said, “Who gives a crap? As long as they miss us I don't care why.”

Sam is in his usual spot overlooking the airfield watching the Mustangs taking off and landing as he wonders if Army troops in Europe will be here soon to lend a hand against the Japanese. He figures that there's only a few more spots to hit before an invasion of Japan jumps off. The thought sends a chill through him as the Japanese are tough nuts to crack and the closer to home they get the harder they fight, if that's at all possible. He can't even begin to picture fighting in Japan itself.

Combat

Allied troops unloading over beach at Batan Island took very heavy casualties. 3 X Jack tried to stop Allied planes and 2 were splashed as 26 X SB2C, 18 X TBF and 47 X F6F hit the airstrip for light damage and there was a secondary explosion reported. Near Hong Kong the SS Swordfish hit an AK with 3 torpedoes that ripped out her starboard side and set it ablaze. A half an hour later the sub put 2 more fish into the stubborn AK and with gaping holes on both sides of the hapless vessel she disappeared beneath the boiling water.

At Naga the airfield took heavy damage, there were numerous secondary explosions and personnel losses were heavy from an air raid. The 16th Division was futilely attacked and 2 B-25Js took damage. Then another strike roared in causing moderate casualties. Later the IJA 103rd Division was pounded for heavy losses by Allied aircraft. Artillery exchanges did no harm to the Allied forces and the Japanese had very heavy casualties.

Manila was swept by 24 Corsairs who loitered, but found no targets.

A strike on Tuguegarao lost a Mitchell and had 8 damaged as they inflicted moderate damage on the airstrip and triggered many secondary explosions.

Gil flopped down on his cot wondering how it'll be tomorrow over Japan. He laughs as he thinks of the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and V8 juice and how he's growing to hate the stuff.

Chris sips on a mug of coffee pondering what the immediate future holds. The ships are heading to the E and it is rumored that they're joining up with more carriers to operate on Japan's doorstep. They're always going somewhere and even when they reach their destination it's all the same to the fliers. His missions have become a boring routine that he fights to stay alert on. The Japanese pilots are no long formidable opponents as their planes have become merely targets for the veterans of the USN. The newer replacements have to be reminded of such basic things as to not fly level and straight for to long and to constantly scan the sky around them. They'll learn or die, he thinks.

Bill sighs as he finishes his mini mountain of paperwork. He then sets to writing a letter to Sandy. He asks how things are in the States and realizes that it seems like forever since he's been there.

Combat

In the area surrounding Batan Island numerous air patrols submitted many reports of submarines in the area. Some planes reported making attacks and scoring hits. There were some claims of spotting oil slicks. The AK Thomas Nast was struck by a torpedo while she was unloading and was burning. Batan Island had very light damage done to the airstrip, light damage to the port, some secondary explosions and light casualties from 25 X SB2C, 18 X TBF, 15 X F4U-1D and 71 X F6F. The ground attack by the Allied troops gained some ground and both sides had heavy losses.

A PBM spotted, attacked and claimed a hit on an AK near Okayama.

A naval bombardment of Naga by the Old Gals announced the start of another day in hell for the Japanese defenders as casualties were placed at very heavy. The port was pounded by Allied planes for moderate damage, some secondary explosions were claimed and troop losses were very light. Another air strike hit the airfield for moderately heavy damage, many secondary explosions were seen and casualties were heavy. The 55th Ind. Mixed Brigade was struck 3 times by aircraft for heavy losses. Japanese artillery tried and failed to do any harm while the Allied barrages inflicted very heavy casualties.

The Mitsubishi engine plant at Matsuyama was bombed by 186 X B-29 for moderate damage.

At Toyama 66 X B-29 hit the Mitsubishi engine factory for light damage.

The Mitsubishi engine works at Nagaoka was raided by 110 X B-29 for moderate damage.

Tokyo was swept by 71 X P-51D who bounced 61 X Zeke, 26 X George, 51 X Frank and 34 X Tony. The ballet that ensued was deadly as 40 Zekes, 2 Georges, 40 Franks and 31 Tonys were blasted from the sky. The cost to the Mustangs was 5 planes lost and 3 damaged.

Kendari's airstrip was targeted by 30 X B-24J (2 damaged) and 6 X P-38J resulting in moderate damage being done to the target and a secondary explosion was seen.

At Amboina 138 X A-26B and 56 X P-38J pounced on the port inflicting moderately heavy damage, a very large number of secondary explosions were observed many of which were fuel and personnel losses were moderate.

24 X Corsair F4U-1D swept Manila and found no Japanese aircraft. Then 48 X B-17E (4 damaged), 85 X B-24D (3 downed, 7 damaged) and 71 X P-38J hammered away doing heavy damage to the airfield, heavy damage to the port, a very large number of secondary explosions, 2 of which were fuel, were seen and casualties were heavy. Another attack was made by 70 X B-24J (9 damaged) and the airfield had additional moderate damage, the port had light damage, a couple of secondary explosions erupted and personnel losses were very light.

At Tuguegarao 45 X B-25J (11 damaged) and 15 X P-51D hit the airstrip for extremely light damage.

Rabaul was raided by 12 X Liberator VI for very light damage to the airfield and there were very light casualties.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division sustained heavy losses from an air attack.

The Japanese ships about 128 miles NW of Taytay were attacked by 27 X SB2C, 18 X TBM, 3 X F4U-1D and 15 X F6F with the following results.

TK Ken'yo Maru 8 bomb hits, sunk
A couple of hours later nother strike was made by 15 X TBF, 12 X F4U-1D and 14 X F6F and they found no targets.

London and Canberra are jointly working on an operation to put additional pressure on the Japanese.

China continues to go it's own way, pleading for more of everything and seemingly doing nothing to fight the Japanese with it. Their answer is that they are holding down the bulk of the IJA.

Stalin doesn't like what he is being told of the huge concentration of Japanese units in the Harbin area. He orders his generals to counter this with forces of their own and wants to know what can be done to alleviate this problem, diplomatically and by force of arms.

Washington is generally pleased with the current course of the war and quietly hope for an end sometime this year. They are also wary of the possibility of further setbacks such as Hong Kong was. Truman believes that the only countries that can truly be counted on in the Pacific are the Aussies and Kiwis. The Canadians offer little, the British are suffering from tunnel vision concerning regaining their former possessions, the Chinese are an anomaly and the Soviets are double dealing and self serving.

A naval bombardment of Naga by the Old Gals announced the start of another day in hell for the Japanese defenders as casualties were placed at very heavy. The port was pounded by Allied planes for moderate damage, some secondary explosions were claimed and troop losses were very light. Another air strike hit the airfield for moderately heavy damage, many secondary explosions were seen and casualties were heavy. The 55th Ind. Mixed Brigade was struck 3 times by aircraft for heavy losses. Japanese artillery tried and failed to do any harm while the Allied barrages inflicted very heavy casualties.

How long before the IJA units start getting wiped out by attrition?

As long as supplies flow from Manila Naga won't be collapsing. I suspect that Steve will try to pull back his forces when things get worse.

Combat

Numerous sightings of subs in the area surrounding Batan Island poured in throughout the day. Many attacks were made with some claims of hits being submitted. The AK Mariscal Sucre was attacked near Batan Island, being hit by a torpedo. The AK Edmund Fanning was also hit by a fish that caused heavy damage and a fire broke out.

In the Tainan area many sub sightings were reported with attacks being made.

The Old Gals bombarded Naga before retiring for replenishment doing extremely light airfield damage, causing some secondary explosions (1 fuel) and casualties were heavy. A raid by 21 X B-24J (1 damaged) and 33 X P-38J triggered a secondary explosion. The 55th Ind. Mixed Brigade was hit by 15 X A-26B (1 downed, 1 damaged) and 14 X P-38J who didn't manage to harm a soul. Allied artillery inflicted heavy losses while their Japanese counterparts failed to hurt anybody.

Ichang was raided by 62 X B-25J and 50 X P-38J. The Lightnings fought off the CAP of 3 X George, 1 X Frank and 9 X Tony by splashing all but 1 of the Georges while 2 P-38Js were shot down and another was damaged. The airstrip was moderately damaged, there were a couple of secondary explosions, 3 Oscars, 3 Sonias, 1 Ann and 2 Dinahs were destroyed on the ground and personnel losses were moderate.

Kendari was hit by 27 X B-24J (2 damaged) and 5 X P-38J for moderate airfield damage, a secondary explosion and light casualties.

Amboina was struck by 89 X A-26B (13 damaged) and 47 X P-38J for a couple of secondary explosions and moderate troop losses.

At Tuguegarao 39 X B-25J (4 damaged) and 18 X P-51D struck for very light airfield damage and a secondary explosion was seen.

Near Taipei the Japanese shipping was attacked by 50 X SBD (3 damaged) and 18 X TBM who did the following:

Another strike arrived later and the 8 X TBM and 20 X FM-2, but couldn't find a target. Then in the afternoon 18 X SBD, 14 X SB2C, 8 X TBF, 40 X TBM, 8 X F6F and 7 X F4F-4 searched for and found nothing to attack. Still not about to give up a strike comprised of 25 X SB2C, 8 X TBM, 14 X F6F and 8 X FM-2 futilely searched for targets before returning to their ships.

An assault by the Kiwis on the Batan Island defenses gained some more ground and both sides sustained heavy casualties.

Red has been having nightmares about a ship being sunk and he's in the water, with sharks. He tells Cookie about it only after having made him promise to never tell another soul. “What I can't understand is that when my ship was sunk in December 1941 and the sub saved me plenty of time went by and I never had any dreams about it. Now, years later, I'm having this dream to often. What gives?” Cookie shrugs and agrees that nobody else can know about this. To himself Cookie wonders if the Palawan is a doomed ship.

Chris is lying in his bunk reading a letter from Emily that tells him that it's hot and dry in Defiance. Chris thinks that at least there's no flooding. The rest of the letter contains stuff about people he knows and in closing Emily states that she misses him and can't wait for him to come home. “I can't wait to get home,” he says out loud and an “Amen” comes from the passageway.

Combat

At 22 miles S of Wenchow there have been some sightings of subs, reports of attacks being made and claims of oil slicks seen.

The SS Dorado tried to attack 3 PGs and a PC 11 miles SE of Sinkep Island.

A sub tried to attack the unloading Allied ships near Batan Island, but was struck by USN DDs numerous times before she could get into position and a kill was awarded.

Allied troops unloading over beach at San Marcelino took extremely heavy casualties. An attack was made by 12 X Judy on the unloading American ships. They were greeted by 12 X F6F who splashed 4 Judys and damaged 3 others, but an LST was hit by 3 bombs. The vessel was heavily damaged, had severe flooding and was burning. In the late afternoon, after everyone got off, the LST was scuttled.

Rabaul was visited by 3 X Liberator VI who missed their target as it was obscured by low lying cloud cover.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division had moderate losses from 48 X Mosquito FB.VI, 55 X A-26B, 4 X Kittyhawk III, and 9 X Spitfire VIII.

The Japanese ships 18 miles SE of Shanghai were attacked by 24 X SBD and 15 X TBF (1 damaged) with the following results:

Almost immediately following a second wave of planes appeared. The 42 X SBD, 51 X SB2C (1 damaged), 59 X TBF, 32 X TBM, 12 X F4U-1D, 197 X F6F, 42 X FM-2 and 8 X F4F-4 proceeded to calmly pound away at the Japanese ships.

A few hours later the USN sent in another attack of 28 X SB2C, 30 X TBM, 3 X F6F and 25 X FM-2 who found no targets, just lots of debris. In the late afternoon 8 X TBM and 8 X FM-2 searched for and found no targets. 8 X TBM nosed around and they too found nothing to attack.

About 147 miles SE of Shanghai 26 X SBD (4 damaged) struck the Japanese ships:
PC PC-18 2 bomb hit, on fire, heavy damage
PC PC-15 6 bomb hits, sunk
PC PC-13 4 bomb hits, sunk
Then another attack was made by 26 X SBD and 18 X TBM who added to the Japanese distress.

Near Shanghai a pair of MSWs were attacked by 15 X TBF (1 damaged) and each ate a fish that killed them both. Another strike of 24 X SBD, 9 X F4U-1D, 126 X F6F, 63 X FM-2 and 7 X F4F-4 attacked a couple of MSWs.

At Naga the Japanese artillery inflicted negligible casualties on the Allied forces while they absorbed heavy losses from the Allied barrages.

On Batan Island the Kiwis attacked again taking a little more ground, dishing out heavy casualties to the Japanese while taking moderate losses of their own. The brigade commander has radioed for reinforcements as his unit appears to be unable to dislodge the Japanese from their defenses and is being chewed up.

At Tuguegarao an Allied attack took ground as both sides suffered heavy casualties.

A sighting of IJN warships S of Okinawa was vague as to the types of ships, numbers were also vague, but the course given was to the W so USN CVs are moving to intercept. None of this would've transpired if it weren't for a sub spotting a float plane. Transports have been ordered to move out of and to avoid the area. The problem faced by USN commanders is that their BBs were detached long ago and are making for Cagayan to replenish. Nobody wants to be the commander of a third night intercept by the IJN that costs the USN CVs.

Elaine listens to her father's lament after the Bucs lost to the Dodgers 4-1 in New York. He's resigned to another year of frustration and he asks, “Why did I have to be a Pirates fan? Year after year of frustration and for what?” Elaine doesn't know what to say so she just nods in agreement. She has her own worries as there's been no mail from Gil for a while now.

The jokes are flying about the food and Gil asks, “Why does the Navy deliver liver all the way from New Zealand for us to eat and they get steak? Is there something wrong with this?” The guys laugh as they walk out to the hardstand where Jake's Jalopy sits undergoing maintenance. It's not that they don't trust the mechanics to do things right, but their lives depend on it and they all want to check out their stations.

Stick is having a run of luck like never seen before as the pile of money in front of him continues to grow and the other guys are all moaning. Finally the crap game breaks up and one of the guys says, “Stick, what are you going to do with all of that money? You can't spend it here unless you want to be fleeced by the Sea Bees and you certainly can't buy yourself a kill.” Nobody laughs, they just stare at the guy who sheepishly says, “Sorry.”
