Does sacking a character reduce your chances of recruiting a new one?

Post by Osito »

I have this drunken fleet admiral who also happens to be crap at defence and crap at logistics. He has no redeeming features whatsoever. If I sack him, will it reduce the probability that I'll ever see another admiral?

Based on my character turnover rate I'd say no. I dismiss them freely and keep getting new ones.

I notice that Ship Captains are exceedingly rare, though. I won't dismiss them unless their stats are unbearably horrible.

As far as I can tell dismissing characters has no effect on the spawning of new characters.  The exception is leaders who respawn (for most races [;)]) pretty quickly if you dismiss them.  Sometimes I dismiss several leaders in the early game until I get a decent one...  (The only other case I hold a suspicion about is spies, maybe if you lose your last a new spawn is more likely?)

Other than that I try to put any character I have to use. In my current game I have an uninhibited corrupt spy who is -10 (or more) at everything except counter-intelligence (+4) you know what he will do until he dies.  An early raid on my homeworld popped a general who is a good tactician but also demoralising so he has been spending time on a construction ship cruising the system until I build a troop transport.  Only if a character has no redeeming feature will I dismiss them since they are a limited resource.

You only have a higher chance for a new Char when you have no char left of this category.

Create a fleet out of single ship or two. Put him in charge of the fleet and then fight things to fight - especially pirates and monsters. It will increase his chances of getting a decent trait if he wins some battles. I have found that you can farm bad fleet admirals to get a decent traits and if you lose him, so what?

If you want to dismiss, I don't think it has any impact on getting or not getting another admiral unless it is the only one you have. Seems you get most new charaters faster if you don't have one of that class.

I have never had the guts to actually sack a leader, so hats off to the guys who have tried it.

Yeah, you can freely dismiss leaders early in the game unless you have a character take over his job. I think fleet admirals, generals and ship captains (for pirates) can take over the leader position.

But if you have only agents and scientists, the game will generally just give you a new leader, so you might get better one with better stats.

As far as spies go, I seem to remember that one patch (or maybe the expansion itself) increased the chances of getting new spies if you loose your last one. Presumably that includes situations where you sack your last spy.

Leaders get replaced pretty quickly. I haven't had a problem getting admirals or generals (as they are heavily linked to your recruitment/construction). I find diplomats very hard to pick up (though I suspect if I reject all treaty offers and then immediately offer the same treaty myself I may get credit for diplomacy and spawn faster, but not sure) and scientists aren't especially common either (I'm always researching, so not like I can do anything to increase my chance of recruitment).

I do wonder if there is an innate bonus to each character class, regardless of their stats. If so then it would be wise to always keep all non-leaders. If not, then those negative stats could be a real problem (and I do have to wonder why the random spawns so often end up more negative than positive).

I don't dismiss them, even if they are horrible. My reasoning is that it makes the game even more challenging for me if my characters are complete losers.

As far as it affecting things, no. In fact, if you sack your leader, you almost immediately get a replacement.

What is the deal with demoralizing characters? I'm wondering if I should have sacked this demoralizing spy I had. He was always off on missions so I'm not sure would be able to demoralize my other spies back at home at the same time.

Yeah I'd love to know if this is the case. Since you can't move intelligence agents to another planet/base/fleet would I be better off getting rid of this buzz kill?

That's interesting, in my latest game my empire wouldn't stop pooping out ship captains, at one point I had three spawn on the very same ship. 0.o I canned all the bad ones to make room for other characters as I know there is a cap of some sort based on empire size.

Leaders can be canned fairly freely, but most bad leaders can eventually be trained up into at least decent ones. They'll get replaced very quickly as mentioned above, and there's no penalty for canning any character spawn-rate-wise. In fact, it'll increase if the number of characters you already possessed was the limiting factor on the spawn rate.
The Distant Worlds sale made my purchase possible. Thank you!
