Ubuntu(Linux) compatibility for Matrix games?

Post by SapperAstro_MatrixForum »

Hello all,

I am getting a touch frustrated with the direction microsoft is taking their OS, with more and more spyware, kidware and crapware being shoved onto it, I can only see things getting worse before they get better...So... I have tried Ubuntu and it is quite a nice operating system, very very fast, easy to use, and has plenty of software to do all the usual things...HOWEVER....

One big factor is that of games. Specifically wargames.

I know Unbuntu has WINE (windows emulator) that can play all sorts of games (with varying success), and a number of games even play straight out of the box, but I want to know how Matrix games go.

So, has anyone had any experience with this? Any devs want to get in on this and give their take? This is the only thing holding me back now from a Ubuntu future.

That is a great question and definitely needed!
Germany's unforgivable crime before the Second World War was her attempt to extricate her economy from the world's trading system and to create her own exchange mechanism which would deny world finance its opportunity to profit.

Sounds like you have ubuntu installed, so I counter question, why not just try out some of your games?

I am concluding you DO have some Slitherine Group products.

I don't hate Windows 8 any more than I hate any other OS actually. I have learned from experience, that they can all be annoying in their own fashion.
I have too many too complicated wargames, and not enough sufficiently interested non wargamer friends.

i use Ubuntu when i can and like you would ditch windows entirely if the games i love were on linux

however - help is at hand - try Steam as it has a growing number of games playable natively (no wine)

also, now that Paradox are using Steam for their games things like Crusader Kings 2 are already available and i believe EU4 will also have a linux version

Matrix seems to be getting a little left behind in making games available across platforms

I dabbled with Ubuntu and Wine until I got Windows 8 last October. I hated messing with Wine and used playonlinux a GUI frontend for Wine.

Battle Academy worked fine. JTCS worked but highlights around units became squares. Didn't bother me.

Any game that required downloading and installing .Net or XNA did not work. Wine 1.6 was recently released and is supposed to have improved mono and .Net support. I don't know. Ubuntu has a game subforum where you could ask if anyone has tried a game but most are not wargamers. Wine db is useless as no one adds war games to the db.

I tried doing that for one or two games. But the Wine AppDB police picked a nit, and removed my contributions. Screw 'em. Never mind.

The only problem with anything non MAC or non Windows, is it has all the geek appeal of 1980s technology.

And I was there for all that 1980s technology and don't recall any of it fondly.

Is newblette some sort of catch all phrase with slacker?

DSWargamer: No, I installed Ubuntu on the inlaws computer and have been running through it with them. I suppose I could take some of the games over there, but was hoping to avoid the time wastage by asking here at the forums.

To be honest, I haven't seen much of the 80's tech business in Ubuntu (I was there too). It actually surprised me just how 'modern' it all looked and felt, along with the various applications (Libre word and so on) that come with it or can be downloaded free of charge.

For now, I will get rid of XP off the notebook and Ubuntu it to do some assessment.

How difficult is it to port these games? Or add it to the WineDB?

Like berto, I tried to add Battle Academy to the db, but since I used POL, I was denied.

There is a Linux games website, LGDB I think, that has lots of free games. Desura has a lot of Linux games for sale and free.

Hmm, after looking at the software list for Play on Linux, things are better than I had first thought...quite a few titles there, and pretty much the entire GOG category as well so far...

Still, I will have to try Command Ops and a few of my other favourites on here first. Still, looking up at the moment...
