ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZ

It has been a real snoozer for the last couple of turns. The Allies have lots of stuff going in the background, and I assume the Japanese do too.

After the bomber losses the Japanese have suffered, they have resorted to flying Fighter Sweeps over the Bataan and Singapore. I took a chance last turn and gave the fighter crews a rest at Singapore so the Oscars found nothing to entertain themselves with. The fighters will be back up this turn.

Singapore is 92% of the way to forts 4. There are now 15 units reported across from the base, and have ordered a Blenheim recon to see what I can find out.

I disbanded the two remaining fighter squadrons at Bataan, each had one plane left, and both were in the shop for an extended period of time, so it was time to harvest my pilots from there.

The Saratoga is approaching the WC from the south, and will repair at San Diego. I know there are better repair yards available, but the other ports are crawling with subs, and didn't want to risk it; I have lost too many freighters in those waters.

The Japanese seem to up to more tricks near Australia (see image). I don't know where they are going, but there isn't much off in that direction to see. The TF at Timor, not spotted btw, has orders to run away more in the opposite direction. When I am finally able to get them completely offloaded, Timor will be a difficult nut to crack with Japan's typical invasion numbers.

My Clue(tm) board game solution attempt is that this is the 4 Mogami CAs plus 4 DDs, and that they are heading either to the Bay of Bengal (that's a long trip) or more likely to the Darwin area. They may be heading to Koepang, but the SW vector (if reliable) seems to indicate that he's trying to skirt it rather than head for it.

Got mines?

I do have mines in my pools, but have not managed my minelayer locations very well. What do you have in mind?

That's an awfully long way away for him. Not much there right now either.

Interestingly, he is still paying very little attention to Java and Sumatra. Unless he sends some TF's towards Oosthaven, I will have Hurricanes there as well as two light AA regiments in a few turns.

There are two large empty transport TF's in the Perth vicinity right now, although I will be routing them westwards next turn. Lots of empty blue hexes out there.

I think your secret is out. He prob knows about FP and FS. Now it gets interesting. Use the time wisely, considering your fleet status, I would expect a blockade to succeed if he tries it. let me suggest readying an invasion of Marshalls from Hawaii if he concentrates KB at DEI.

What does the recon result across from Zingers tell you about force size?

Good news! I was all worked up over nothing! The Japanese have hardly anything in Johore Bahru! I am attacking!

Image

Seriously though, I will try to get a real recon unit over to take a look. All I have in the area is that Dutch recon unit with a range of 3, so I will have to hop it over to Singapore to take a look - it will be a while. I could set other bombers to recon, but things are a little busy in the Java Sea at the moment; the Japanese must have finally realized that they are facing a wall to the west.

I have been playing WITP and WITPAE for years and have a few WITPAE PBEM games under my belt. I am currently involved in another and we are pumping out 2-3 turns a day. It is enjoyable to read these treads and especially yurs as I feel I need so much advice on so many things. Each time I read thses threads i discover something new to try. Keep up the good work, don't get frustrated, as the allies get pushed around for the 1st 6-12 months. I have lost all my fleet carriers and I am still planning major offensive invasions in several areas as the Japanese try to hold back the growing strength of the allied war machine.

15 units? Only 920 troops? What is your detection level on JB?

Also, RE: your mines - even if you have to use subs, I would mine Darwin ASAP. As a Japanese player, harassing the Allied shipping escapees at a common point like Darwin (and Indian coast ports) is one of my favorite things to do as they seem to be left unprotected in the hurry to just get things out of dodge in the DEI.

Mining Darwin will help prevent subs from sneaking in to take shots as well as discourage his surface forces from attempting a surface raid or bombardment. I would also mine Koepang, which will do the same as at Darwin as well as being another barrier for his eventual invasion of the place. The Allied start with several good (75-capacity) Dutch minelayers in the Java area, and you can also use sub mines. I would place a mine tender at Darwin, and perhaps one at Koepang if you can spare one from the Dutch forces.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I was just frustrated at not being able to make my units do what I wanted them to do. I am getting the hang of it now.

The Dutch mine pool is depleted, I used them at my strongpoints in the DEI to prevent just the sort of thing you were talking about. Surprisingly, I have not seen a single sub in the Indian Ocean or Bay of Bengal, for now I can consider it "Mare Nostrum". As to Koepang, the place is temporarily off limits; Japanese fleets are lurking about, but I will incorporate your idea when I can frighten them off.

I will get some updates out later, but I will say this: BB Haruna caught a torpedo from a Vildebeest! Things are heating up in the DEI.....

Did you do your withdrawals? If you don't you get negative PPs. I think there's at least one British air unit that withdraws n December.

That could be it. Is there any place to look to see what is due for withdrawal?

Under the 'I' button on the task bar. You need to become intimate with all those buttons and their subroutines.

Planes have to be positively withdrawn by the player. They can withdraw from anywhere, more or less. If the unit is fragmented you need to withdraw the frags first. You can strip the pilots before withdrawing.

Ships have to be positively withdrawn too. It has to the exact ship, not any of the class. I think this is different than WITP. Ship withdrawals HAVE CHANGED since the manual was written. Consult the patch notes. Ships can only be withdrawn from certain ports and in certain damage conditions. You MUST plan ahead on ship withdrawals. Not doing so can cost you many hundreds, or even thousands, of PPs.

LCUs withdraw in a 'poof' on their own. No player interaction, no way to prevent it.

If you miss a withdrawal the PP penalty is reported in the daily event report. CombatEvents.txt I think. You need to read that too, not just the Combat Report. Many vital events are only reported in the events report. It's its own button under 'I'.

Hmmm...

Does this mean I am now the proud owner of a bunch of Bolos?

The one I checked had the "Withdraw" button grayed out.

It appears you have several aircaft units who are currently overdue to be withdrawn. This will cripple your PPs until you do withraw them. Ships have selected bases they must be withdrawn from unlike airplanes and LCU are automatically withdrawn. So with LCUs make sure you are not using them in a key garrison or operation when they are due to withraw.

A few groups have to be disbanded instead of withdrawn. It still counts. Why one way versus another I don't know.

I think it's an artifact of the pre-'P' (for Permanent) addition done in an early patch.

For AU Tiger--if the unit has a 'P' it's going to the ETO and is gone. You can strip the pilots, but the airframes leave the game.

Also, can you "upgrade" the 19th BG/32nd BS before you disband it? Upgrade it to B-18s, if possible. Otherwise you risk sending those precious B-17 airframes to the knackers.

17 January 1942
Don’t Need No Stinking PP’s

First the bad news: The Lexington’s pumps failed just south of Melbourne. RIP.

Burma/India – Nothing much has been happening here other than Calcutta will be at level 7 airfield soon. I need to upgrade some fighters! Also, a couple of Hurricane squadrons are heading in from Aden, and once they arrive, the rest of the AVG will be relieved from Rangoon to go to China, IF I have any PP’s to do that with…. I know you don’t need PP’s to go there, but I would like to match the Air HQ in Chungking.

Singapore – The forts are at level 4 now and no bomber attacks in a while. The Japanese have been sending wave after wave of Oscars on sweeps. The shops at the Singapore airfield are full of broken airplanes – the fighters have stood down for now. Newly arrived is an actual recon unit so I will have a better idea of what is in JB soon. Japanese subs infiltrated the waters between Palembang and Singapore, sinking two supply laden AKL’s in a single turn. The Elektra and the Express, two British DD’s with an ASW rating of 8 jumped all over one of the subs, hitting it 11 times. In the same turn, a Dutch submarine, passing through the area, put a torpedo into the other one; I love those Dutchies! More AKL’s are heading into the area to resume supply transport duties – we recently had a scare in the DEI and evacuated most of the shipping temporarily.

The DEI – Three transports with two light AA LCU’s docked in Oosthaven this turn while another transport is about to unload a Hurricane squadron at Tjilatjap. These were going directly to Oosthaven, but the Japanese are getting more active in the area and I didn’t want to risk this precious cargo. It will unload here, move by rail to Batavia for reassembly, and fly to Palembang.

A couple of turns ago a BB TF sailed into the northern Java Sea.

Image

Identified in this TF are the following ships:

BB Haruna
BB Kongo
CA Ashigara
CA Maya
DD Asagiri

These ships were hit by wave after wave of LBA from Palembang and Batavia, but the only hits scored were one torpedo and two 500 GP bombs on the Haruna, and one 500 GP bomb hit on the Maya. All of these hits were cored by Dutch Vildebeests, the unfortunate thing was that I did not have enough torpedoes in the inventory at Palembang for both strikes. This oversight has been rectified. Following this attack, the Japanese TF fell back, I am not sure where, and Palembang has been targeted by recon flights.

Also notable, the Nells based out of northern Borneo are now escorted by large numbers of Zeros – they attacked the two British submarine killers at Palembang, but scored no hits; hitting DD’s from 11,000 ft. cannot be easy!

In China, my Sally CAP trap worked out pretty well:

Morning Air attack on 35th Chinese Corps, at 91,38 , near Chengting

Weather in hex: Severe storms

Raid spotted at 19 NM, estimated altitude 5,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 6 minutes

Japanese aircraft
Ki-21-Ic Sally x 42

Allied aircraft
I-15-III x 1
H81-A3 x 8

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-21-Ic Sally: 5 destroyed, 6 damaged

No Allied losses

Morning Air attack on 35th Chinese Corps, at 91,38 , near Chengting

Weather in hex: Severe storms

Raid spotted at 14 NM, estimated altitude 9,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 4 minutes

Japanese aircraft
Ki-21-Ic Sally x 25

Allied aircraft
H81-A3 x 4

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-21-Ic Sally: 3 destroyed

No Allied losses

I am looking forward to getting these guys into better airplanes:

Image

The 12 B-17’s in Burma/India have changed HQ’s and are now flying out of Chungking, having hit Canton for 1 Heavy Industry point. For long range aircraft like these, China has a wealth of targets to hit. Doing so, even with small numbers of B-17’s will help to hinder Japanese supply efforts in the region and provide a nuisance factor where they will need to think about protecting those assets. I am very seriously considering sending the DEI B-17’s there to help, but that will be a while: they flew a “turn too far” and flew into a Zero CAP at Kendari. Several planes need repair in a addition to losing a couple of bombers.

Down near Koepang, the Japanese TF that was sneaking out of the DEI headed southwest for a turn and then turned back towards Koepang. It is a BB TF including the following ships:

BB Mutsu
BB Yamashiro

Image

Hudsons, newly based out of Broome, have succeeded in a single hit on the Yamashiro with a 250 lb. SAP bomb. I am not sure if this penetrated the deck armor, but even if it did, it was unlikely to do much damage. If the TF decides to stay in the vicinity very much longer it will be facing bombs much heavier than 250 lb.

An annoyance attack was staged on Canton Island last turn here two small CA TF’s bombarded the island, and a DM left a few gifts behind:

Night Naval bombardment of Canton Island at 153,143

Allied Ships
CA San Francisco
CA Minneapolis
CL Honolulu
CL Phoenix
DD Phelps
DD Selfridge
DMS Hovey

Airbase hits 7
Runway hits 11
Port hits 7
Port fuel hits 2

CA San Francisco firing at Canton Island
CA Minneapolis firing at Canton Island
CL Honolulu firing at Canton Island
CL Phoenix firing at Canton Island
DD Phelps firing at Canton Island
DD Selfridge firing at Canton Island
DMS Hovey firing at 52nd Naval Guard Unit

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Night Naval bombardment of Canton Island at 153,143

Allied Ships
CA New Orleans
CL Helena
CL St. Louis
CL Detroit
CL Raleigh
DD Downes
DD Shaw
DD Ralph Talbot

Airbase hits 4
Airbase supply hits 5
Runway hits 22
Port hits 15
Port fuel hits 2
Port supply hits 5

CA New Orleans firing at Canton Island
CL Helena firing at Canton Island
CL St. Louis firing at Canton Island
CL Detroit firing at Canton Island
CL Raleigh firing at Canton Island
DD Downes firing at 52nd Naval Guard Unit
DD Shaw firing at Canton Island
DD Ralph Talbot firing at Canton Island

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 140 encounters mine field at Canton Island (153,143)

Japanese Ships
DD Yayoi, Mine hits 1, heavy damage

My analysis: Skyros has realized that he has a bigger problem in the western DEI than he anticipated, perhaps my earlier Siir Robin’s in Malaysia, southern Burma, and the PI led him to believe that would be my overall strategy. Depending on what his recon flights over Palembang are telling him, he has to now account for this major thorn in his side. He hasn’t hit Palembang from the air directly yet, but bombing the place into submission will be a very expensive proposition as it will shortly be the most heavily AAA defended hex on the map, and the airfield is growing to level 5 with accompanying numbers of Aviation Support accumulating. I am interested to see what he does to handle this, but I will bet quite a lot that it will involve carriers. It will take a lot of fuel to blockade Java and Sumatra.
