Patches causing crashes

I just got the game last weekend. I'm enjoying it very much so far, but am only able to play the original unpatched version.

I have tried both patches independently and each one causes the same crash. Uninstalling the game after the patch and reinstalling only the original game causes it to run fine again.

The main game interface loads fine. I get an error message in the middle of loading any scenario or saved game. The message is:
