Thx for sharing those stories guys. I was too young to remember the Vietnam war, but I sure do remember the huge amounts of refugees once the commies "won" the war.
Modern day versions of the AC 130 do carry an impressive amount of firepower. You wonder if that will be a thing of the past once autonomous drones take over the skies? Just like manned choppers will be a thing of the past one day?

Thanks Larry. Watching Platoon again recently it hasn't aged well in my opinion..acting is pretty poor (except for William Dafoe) etc. Full Metal Jacket still stands the test of time though as does Apocalypse Now. I started getting into Vietnam pre Platoon around '83 a magazine starting coming out aswell that I collected and had the map of the country on my wall I was 12 years old hehe. 13th Valley and Fields of Fire where my go to reads. I recently read two superb books..Dak To and Steel my Soldiers hearts both highly recommended.

RE: Campaign for South Vietnam
I pushed the "end turn" button and the NVA moved. Here's the situation in the far north. The NVA have brought in the rest of the
division and is threatening the far left. All that stands on that ground right now is the Marine Force recon units and they will get wiped
out for sure unless I helicopter in some more Marines pretty quick. I'm going to have to ship in all the Marines that are in-country to
handle this situation.

Here's what's going on at Ban Me Thout. Only two of the three NVA regiments is showing and the third one is out there somewhere but
I hesitate to attack w/ the ARVN units because their proficiency is only like 48 or so and they would have heavy losses trying to take on
the NVA. I'm going to see if I can't find some units to come to their aid and meanwhile whittle down their strength by arty attacks and air
strikes.

I made a mistake in that I was moving some arty to Ban Me Thout when I encountered a VC unit and now I've got to drive some land
combat unit into that hex to protect the arty. I SHOULD have moved the ground combat unit first before the arty........to check out the
road and make sure it's clear all the way into town. D'oh.

Just to the SE of the Arty unit and it's associated VC unit is the city of Na Trang and that's where the Korean's are parked and they have
lots of armour to be moved to Ban Me Thout. I'll get busy and get them moving to help out the arty unit and to get some more armour
into the Ban Me Thout area as a reserve for now.

The 22nd SOS used to fly a lot of missions up and down the Ho Chi Minh trail so I thought I'd fly one air strike to see what happens. I
lost almost half the planes in the squadron. I think I'll use a different plane type on targets on the trail.

That would be a [8D] AAR.If I wasn't wargaming all the time I can imagine that I would wake up one morning
in a roadside ditch w/ my hair messed up, my wallet missing, and lipstick on my collar. I'm better off playing
games instead.

I don't remember when or where I first heard warnings about going into the Off Limits areas in Saigon when I was stationed at TanORIGINAL: Agent SThat would be a AAR.If I wasn't wargaming all the time I can imagine that I would wake up one morning in a roadside ditch w/ my hair messed up,

Son Nhut during my first tour as a weapons mechanic. I was on the night shift loading rockets and flares on O-2's for the 19th TASS.
Our shift was from like 18:00 to 06:00 and when you get off you can catch a pedicab at the main gate and for about 25 MPC's you
could catch a ride to just about anywhere you wanted to go. An on my "day off" I usually went to the clubs downtown where the
Vietnamese club manager had hired a Japanese band to play the songs going around at the time. Usually they played pretty good
and the drinks were relatively cheap and the girls all wanted to sit with you and "talk" and if they did you had to "buy them a drink"
which was usually jacked up about 200% in price. And then about midnight or so when the clubs started to get crowded there was talk
about going somewhere else. Somebody said he knew where an actual brothel was and he had been there and the service was
excellent and the selection was large and the only problem was it was in the Off Limits area. So they would head off in that direction
and I would break off and head back to the barracks. Only I was drunk and I got lost and I was by myself and it was late at night and
I needed a ride and there was this Vietnamese National who rode up on his motorcycle and wanted to make a little spare change so
he offered me a ride to the base and I climbed on the back of his bike. The rest of the night was largely a blur. I remember riding on
the back of his bike and we were passing traffic and making turns and pretty soon we got into the main stream of high speed traffic
on like a freeway or something. Then the QC jeep pulled behind us and turned on it's blinking lights. QC was the Vietnamese MP's.
There was an American Army GI riding in the QC jeep and he stopped us and the instant I got off the bike the rider took off into the
night and they took me into custody. I was given a lecture about getting into the Off Limits areas which is where the motorcycle
brought me and little did I know that I was headed in the direction of trouble. When the motorcycle finally arrived at the destination
I was to have been ganged up on, stripped of my wallet and anything valuable and I was to have been left in a roadside ditch some-
where. The American Army GI said something about giving me a ride to the base ( in the other direction ) and about half an hour
later I was in my bed in the barracks, sleeping it off. It's not just a job it's an adventure.

Well that was a hair raising story ... damn that could have gone totally wrong very easily.
I could say don't get drunk and don't leave the green zone and what not... then again you/we were so much younger so yeah at that age I think you judge dangers differently. Maybe.
Glad you made it so we can enjoy your AAR's [:D]

Hey Larry. Been enjoying your AAR. Just to let you know I'm in the middle of a major upgrade for CSV and will be following your AAR for any ideas to include in the new version. I plan to incorporate the AA fix as that is one area where the simulation was lacking.
One thing I noticed is that you mentioned that you modified some NLF settings at the start of the scenario. That's no problem but you did start the game as NLF PO, right? The reason I ask is that there is a Turn 1 event that sets some parameters for the NLF PO, and it won't execute if you start the game hotseat and then switch to PO. The way to work around that is to start the game with the NLF PO, then immediately interupt it on its first turn and make the desired changes. Just wanted to throw that out there.
Anyway have fun.
Curt

Actually, I might be wrong on that. IIRC turn-based events lay dormant until the conditions are right to trigger them. So it's possible the NLF PO will play just fine the way you did it. But if you're not too far into the game it's better to re-start to be sure.

That's the plan. In fact the AA fix is what prompted me to start the update. I've never been satisfied with how few helo losses the U.S. took in this scenario.
