Anybody notice?

Post by Duck Doc »

Has anybody noticed we have had three AAR's which have nicely demonstrated how well this game handles air combat, naval surface combat and submarine warfare? I am very impressed with how it does in all three of the arenas of combat. Am I alone here?

There is also another one posted over at PdL: http://www.puntadelanza.net/Foro/phpBB3 ... 41&t=15289 . That one has air, surface, submarine & ASW, infantry/SOF and COIN ops all brought together for some all-arms fun. The "commentary" is in Spanish but the scenario itself and the messages are in English. Screenshots are of course multilingual [:D]

Excellent - I wish I could read Spanish, but the screen shots are great and cover many things I haven't seen before. A couple questions:

1. The sinking of the AOR - was that a pre-planned event which was going to happen no matter what (or at least the attack on it) or was that just set up by the scenario designer to make the two cross paths?

2. The 'Flash Message' shown on the 'Jue Ago 15, 2013 4:21 pm' post. Was that contingent on the sinking of the AOR?

I guess my point is - if the Columbian player had re-directed the AOR so that it would not cross paths with the sub, would the scenario even happen?

This looks fantastic BTW.

Another couple questions - the ground combat looks good, I'm guessing that it's limited to small engagements as in this AAR.

1. The scrolling record reveals quite a bit of info. Is that scalable to create a Fog of War feeling?

2. Every now and again you see a message, such as when the sub was sunk or aircraft destroyed: Event: 'Aircraft destroyed' -25' has been fired? Is that a victory point message, not really clear?

Less than 2 weeks away... can't wait.

The latter.

Yes, through the event engine.

That's probably a question for the author. My _guess_ is the encounter was unavoidable but its timing was highly variable and thus unpredictable.

Yes, you can configure each message type to be (a)completely hidden from you, (b)Shown on the message log only, or (c) Shown on the message log and also trigger a pop-up that also stops the sim clock (very useful for e.g. new weapon contacts).
2. Every now and again you see a message, such as when the sub was sunk or aircraft destroyed: Event: 'Aircraft destroyed' -25' has been fired? Is that a victory point message, not really clear?
Yes, processed through the event engine.

As author of the scenario I can answer some of the questions; the attack in the AOR is nearly sure, as the sub is very close and the AOR has not sensors to detect the torpedoes launch; I played it many times and even trying to change the path of the AOR, she is always finally hit by them; in theory it is possible that the attack fails tough... but a player who plays first time without previous 'intel' will probably not change the path of the AOR at scenario start.

Read through the tutorial scenario AAR in Spanish. There is a dizzying array of sensors and weapons systems. Does the game come with an encyclopedia? If not what is the best and most accessible resource for the uninitiated? Continue to be impressed with the game.

Wikipedia is a great place to start for the basics of most platforms and weapons. And of course I'm sure the forum here at Matrix and the developers' site will be a good resource, too. There is also a very good in-game database viewer where sensor, weapon and performance info is available.

While any game has its' degree of abstraction, it's amazing how many real-life tactics work well in Command! Get ready to strap into this game come September 24!

Thanks for the responses guys. Can't wait. Regarding the data base, in the AAR there are some good photos - are they in the DB or did the AAR author get those from the net?

Chrome translates the the text in the posts but not the images in that AAR, so I'm only getting half the story, still it looks like a lot of fun. The event system and special messages really add a lot of flavor to things.

It's just crazy that this game can simulate everything from small arms combat to satellites and nuclear war. It's a day one purchase for me for sure.
