Well, I think it's not a bad tactic. Japan can sacrifice few LCUs if that means denying the allies Rangoon (which is the most important base in that region) for some more months. Also without Rangoon the Burma road remains closed...which is a very good news for Japan!

Yeah, but with only 1800 AV its not much of a delay?
It seems likely to be enough. What is the transit time from Perth to the Burma Theater?

For the more experienced players, what will I need to bring in to capture this base??

Although I do not qualify as an experienced player, I will answer this as somebody that has successfully pulled off a Southeast Asia invasion and termination of the game by 1944 [8D]

The urban environment and experienced troops combined make a concoction that is difficult to break. My solution N=2 was to smash and isolate the IJA from arriving in Rangoon with fresh troops. The troops that did arrive were disabled and disrupted making the multipliers for urban and forts act on low adjusted AV values. It looks like you are looking at fresher troops? Thus the ticket might be exhausting supply by isolation and disruption of the troops is my recipe for breaking the enemy rather than overwhelming AV/Firepower. The real question is the use of 4E's to disrupt the enemy LCU's before deliberate attacks and the supplies used by attacking the port/airfield. A real siege situation here ...

Oct 16 thru 20 in 1943.
Going back to play catch up as game is now in early December.

Key: TT = Torpedo; bb = ground bombardment; c = casualties; b = base hits; s = supply hits; r = runway hits; p = port hits; f = fuel hits; AV = Assault Value; DC = Depth Charged; (*) = destroyed aircraft; If odds are underlined, they are the Allies; BG = Bomber Group of 48 planes (4 x 12 bomber squadrons); FG fighter group = 25 fighter planes if American

16th - PT Boats fail to slow down Fast Transport TF (CL, 4 DD) at Horn Island. Over 100 Helens hit stack to NE of Esperance before another deliberate attack wipes out two more LCUs. Chinese LCUs attacked by ground bombardments and air around Lanchow. Multiple BB TF hit my troops at Rangoon (6 DD & 2 CA, CL, 5 DD).

17th - BB TF hits Rangoon again. Same same around Lanchow. Air attacks outside of Esperance.

18th - One PT sunk at Horn against 2 CL, 4 DD. Action around Lanchow and Esperance same. 85 Helens attack my troops at Pegu.

19th - Oscar sweeps over Sian. Over 150 PVs, Ansons, Mitchells hit AF at Horn with P-38 sweeps. 150 Helens before another attack outside Esperance. Three more LCUs eliminated. Sweeping P-38s are meet by Nicks and Georges over Shortland. I lose 30 P-38s to 22 for Japan. Ouch!!

20th - Allies have DD sunk at Horn when 2 CL, 4 DDs face my CA, CL, 8 DDs. A 2nd surface combat between CL, 5 DD vs 2 Allied CL, 8 DDs does nothing. In China, my blocking force east of Lanchow is defeated, Sian has Oscar sweeps, and Helens visit Wuchow.

Oct 21 thru 25 in 1943.
A pause in action in Burma. Solomons heats up.

Key: TT = Torpedo; bb = ground bombardment; c = casualties; b = base hits; s = supply hits; r = runway hits; p = port hits; f = fuel hits; AV = Assault Value; DC = Depth Charged; (*) = destroyed aircraft; If odds are underlined, they are the Allies; BG = Bomber Group of 48 planes (4 x 12 bomber squadrons); FG fighter group = 25 fighter planes if American

21st - My 2 CL, 8 DDs bombard Horn. P-38s sweep. In China, Sian sees Oscar sweeps, troops south of Lanchow are hit from air and by ground bb attacks. Over 130 Helens hit cut off troops to NW of Esperance before deliberate attack wipes out 5 more LCUs. My deliberate attack on trail 3 EEN of Chaing Mai goes no where. Four bases in lower Solomons expand.

22nd - Fast Transports land at Groote Eylandt. Sian swept and troops SE of Lanchow bombed by over 50 Sally. 9th Australian Division is trashed when it does a shock attack when crossing river from Bassien into Rangoon.[X(][:@] An expensive lesson here!?! Troops NW of Esperance see another 130 Helens.

Pegu - AF is 1(7) 2% with 459 supply and "Max Draw" of only 500. Since Nick retreated faster than expected, most of mine here are late in starting their prep for Moulmein. Also, most of those divisions need adequate supply to allow device upgrades. Need to get the '43 version.

23rd - Horn is again busy as CL, 7 DD Fast Transport push past 11 PT. 150 bombers hit the AF again after P-38 sweeps. After 140 Helens visit my troops NW of Esperance, another deliberate attack results in my big NZ AA Bde being destroyed. [:(] Shortland is a major air " fur ball." I lose 16 Corsairs, but his shipping is sunk in port by 4e bombers from Rennell Island.

24th - Skies over Shortland are empty as sweeps come in before SBDs find the few PBs and xAKs. Almost 300 B-24s from Rennell, Cooktown, and Luganville flatten AF. [:D] My 150 2e bombers hit Horn AF. Allied air power flexed today. [:)]

25th - Fast Transports to Horn (CL, 7 DD) find 8 Fletcher DD. I get 5 hits vs Japan's 2. P-38s sweep. Oscars and Sally hit Sian. +180 Helens hit my troops 3 EEN of Chaing Mai.

Part of KB had reacted to bring it in closer than the 7 hexes. Only 20 Jill & Judy make it through the CAP. CVL Hermes takes her 4th TT hit and sinks while another CVE gets a bomb hit.

The Allied counter-strike is not as strong as I would have hoped. 3 CVs are hit by bombs as only 13 Avengers were present.

I'm very disappointed in both results and the limited number of aircraft that flew. This was the TOTAL Allied effort today. [:(] [X(] Hellcats were set at 12k with range at 5 or 6 with 40% CAP, 10% Rest, DB (10% Nav Search) and TB at 5 range with TB have secondary attack of Ground at Umboi. Was this just bad die rolls or did I do something wrong??

This AF was closed for good, I hope, on Dec 29th when multiple BB TF hit the base followed by massive sweeps and all my 4e bombers in theater hitting the AF. Now, I just want it to stay that way. Nick was upset that his minefield didn't hit any of my ships, but i had sent in suicidal minesweepers for the days before and kept range at over 15K for CLs and larger.

Ships Sunk today. I lose a CVL and 7 CVEs for ONE reported CV (Amagi). I should get another Unryu Class CV if that is true. Can I bag all three of his??
Then, it will be an Allied victory.

NE Australia - I'm marching up from Alice Springs towards Darwin. There are two Aussie divisions plus support there. Groote Eylandt has been developed over the months from barges and APDs coming from Normanton. I recently took both Gove and Wessel Island. BF and construction engineers are in route from Townsville/Cairns area. These will need a few weeks to expand as troops prep for further invasions.

Southern Burma - After the capture of Ramree Island in mid-August '43, the rest of the Irrawaddy River area fell quickly. Nick left a sizable garrison at Rangoon (over 4 divisions) plus over 250 fighters. It took some time to cut off Rangoon and then expand the AF at Pegu to get supplies to flow there. Now, Rangoon AF is closed and under siege. I've gotten into Moulmein, but my attempts to cut it off has been slow. I learned again for the second time to bring AA units along with the lead troops. [:-] Thus, Nick was able to send in massive Helens to disrupt and slow down my troops. That has been addressed. [:)] The British Navy has been running BB TF at both bases. This area will be a slow grind.

Just noticed that my sunken CVE air groups are at various bases listed as a fragment "/1" with the parent unit under destroyed air groups and needing PP to buy back. I hope they change over next turn. If not, then MichaelM will get an email with some saves.
