PBEM question???

Post by Speedysteve »

Hi all,

I've just started my first WIR PBEM and I have a question:

I'm German and i've started up the PBEM campaign, entered my password, plotted my turn, ran it and it says save the file and send to your opponent. Did this fine.

HOWEVER,

I sent the following files to my opponent:

Savea
Savea.cd
Savea.md

Because I wasn't sure which of these was needed. My opponent replied saying when he loads the turn it asks for the GERMAN (i.e. my) password???

What are we doing wrong?

Thanks,

Steven

Assuming you saved it as save game A, you did exactly what you should have done and it should have worked. All I can suggest right off is to try and open the file through your game and see what password it asks for. If it is the German still, see if you can open it. If you can open it, then you probably need to try again, or see where it opens up for you. If you can't open it up, then you may have saved it as a different save game. If it asks for the Soviet password, then your opponent needs to try again at his end - email him the files again and see what happens.

Good luck.

Windows (or maybe it's outlook express or something, its been a while, don't remember exactly) doesn't like files without an extention, in this case savea, and in some situations it secretly adds an axtension to it (it remains invisible, you'll have to use the console to see it). If this happens to either of you, then the savea is not replaced and your opponent ends up trying to load the wrong save

Hi all,

Thanks for the info/advice.

I tried loading the turn myself and it asks for the Soviet password so I guess its something in the transfer to my opponent. Perhaps its as Heiks says. If so what should I do?

Any ideas????

I've tried zipping the files and sending them unzipped but no joy. My opponent even said that 2 of the zipped files had 0 bytes in them (I know they are small 2 and 4 bytes I think)!!

Any ideas anyone this is quite frustrating............

Thanks,

Steven

I think it could be something in your zip program as the only times I had problems like that was when I tried sending the savea files etc unzipped. Identical result.
Try using winzip that has always worked without problem for me.

Speedy,

If you continue to have problems with the zipped files then your opponent should be able to rename the savea file to work manually. He would just have to find and delete the savea file (no extension on it), then rename the file that is savea.dat (at least Outlook adds the .dat) to just savea if he knows how (right click on the file and choose rename).

Also, the 3 files should be the following sizes, always:

savea: 58 KB
savea.md: 34 KB
savea.cd: 7 KB

Let us know how you make out.

Hi all,

A minor update:

My opponent has finally managed to get WIR working on his machine (he couldn't start a 41 campaign before) but still no joy loading my saves?!?

I don't see what else could be wrong any ideas?

(I've zipped the files to him and no joy)
(When I try to load the save from my machine it asks for the Soviet password, hence it works)

The file sizes before zip are:

savea - 59k
saveacd - 4k
saveamd - 34k.

Any more advice would be much appreciated.
