Op Valkyrie aka Stauffenberg

Post by decaro »

I'm watching a subtitled German film from 2004 that's listed in my Dish guide as Valkyrie but called "Stauffenberg" in the film's opening. I can't recognize the cast, but the plot goes much like the Tom Cruise film of the same name.

Obviously Cruise and company copied much of this film for his version of the attempted coup, but has anyone else seen this 2004 German gem?

I recall there were two other German films about the coup; I think they were both made in the 1950s.

1955: Der 20. Juli
The Plot to Assassinate Hitler (German: Der 20. Juli) is a German feature film produced by CCC Film on the failed July 20, 1944 attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler.
Falk Harnack directed and co-wrote the 1955 film's script with Günther Weisenborn.[1] Wolfgang Preiss won the German Federal Film Award
for his role as the rebel army officer, Claus von Stauffenberg.

The film has a realism that comes close to the style of a documentary. Release of the film amounted to a race competition against G. W. Pabst's film, Es geschah am 20. Juli,
(English title, Jackboot Mutiny), released in the same year, dealing with the same subject.

1955: Es geschah am 20. Juli
Jackboot Mutiny (German: Es geschah am 20. Juli, literally It Happened on July 20) is a 1955 Austria film directed by Georg Wilhelm Pabst about the July 20 Plot to kill Adolf Hitler.[1]
Bernhard Wicki as Stauffenberg.

1971: Operation Walküre

1990: Stauffenberg – Verschwörung gegen Hitler (The Plot To Kill Hitler)

2004: Stauffenberg
Stauffenberg is a German–Austrian TV film released in 2004 by Das Erste (German TV ARD), about Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg
and the 20 July 1944 plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. The film goes by the international English name of Operation Valkyrie

2009: Operation Walküre – Das Stauffenberg-Attentat (Valkyrie)
Valkyrie is a 2008 American historical thriller film set in Nazi Germany during World War II. The film depicts the 20 July plot in 1944 by German army officers
to assassinate Adolf Hitler and to use the Operation Valkyrie national emergency plan to take control of the country.

Tom Crusie a "much better actor"? I don't think so, but his film did have a superior soundtrack thanks to John Ottman.

Also much tnx to requiem_1 for researching all the Valk films.
