looks like you have a tough decision (now how is that for insightful commenting [8D] ) - probably what is left of your defense, esp in the sector S of Warsaw is holding up a substantial Soviet force. Pull out too early and it may be like letting the cork out of a bottle, too late and you are set up to hand them a huge encirclement.

I will pull back somewhat come mud, then I will try to make do with a screening force for as long as I can during winter, while rebuilding some units in the Berlin area.

Turn 171

Overall
Argh! Not only are the USSR troops highly mobile, they also have a very good CV, AND their C-i-C makes sure they do not rout if pushed back. Annoying!
50 USSR attacks resulted in 23 helds, 24 retreats and 3 surrenders, not to mention a severe blow to our defences...
We made 7 attacks, and scored 1 held and 6 retreats.

Losses
USSR : 75.000 troops, 940 guns, 762 AFVs, 568 AC.
Axis : 55.000 troops, 1.243 guns, 208 AFVs, 251 AC.

Axis units destroyed
7 Fortified Zones.

German units disbanded
3 Fortified zones.

German Pools
Manpower : 1.944
Vehicles : 221.247
Armaments : 117.898

It seems very unlikely at this pace for sure.

Turn 172

Overall
Not much to say, we are on the verge of disaster, and there is not really much I can do about it, as my manpower situation is dire, and the USSR can bring in wave after wave of fresh troops. But for now, we once more revert to the 3 hexes deep defence with our crappiest units in front to soak up enemy MPs. The line is definitively broken...
52 USSR attacks ends with 13 helds, 2 scouted, 29 retreats, 7 routs and 1 surrender. Our 8 attacks gives us 2 helds and 6 retreats.

Losses
USSR : 70.000 troops, 895 guns, 649 AFVs, 649 AC.
Axis : 77.000 troops, 1.522 guns, 430 AFVs, 195 AC.

Axis units destroyed
20th Panzer Division, 8th Jaeger Division, 905th StuG Brigade, 1/604th SP Flak Company.

German units disbanded
8 Fortified zones, and the surrounded 15th SS Grenadier Division is merged into another division to give me one less division to rebuild.

German Pools
Manpower : 5.194
Vehicles : 220.175
Armaments : 116.281

Turn 173 aka blaargh!

Overall
The picture bellows says it all, although we are able to open the pockets formed, but that only delays the inevitable.
80 USSR attacks resulted in 18 helds, 1 scouted, 56 retreats, 3 routs, 1 shatter and 1 surrender. Our 2 attacks ended with 2 retreats.

Losses
USSR : 65.000 troops, 821 guns, 511 AFVs, 606 AC.
Axis : 90.000 troops, 1.724 guns, 286 AFVs, 143 AC.

Axis units destroyed
258th and 349th Infantry Divisions, 62nd LW Flak Regiment, 2nd Lehr Pioneer Battalion, 672nd Pioneer Battalion, 127th Pioneer Battalion, 1/22nd SP Flak Company.

German units disbanded
4 Fortified zones.

Our 2 attacks ended with 2 retreats.

100% success rate is pretty good - suggest that in the formal report to Berlin you miss out the boring small detail of how many you launched ...

that is grim.

How much of that is down to the artillery divisions? I'm still trying to work out how much damage these do.

Most of the damage comes from normal USSR Corps (these are now more or less all around 10CV it seems), but the real benefit for the USSR player when it comes to artillery units, is that he gets a lot more guns to fire during the attack, since he can have a total of 9 artillery divisions attack one of my exposed hexes.

Turn 174 aka turn of mixed feelings

Overall
Let us start with the bad news. We lost somewhat more than an army to the enemy this turn (they still live but will be killed next turn). The good news. MUD! (One turn too late though, as we only had 9 divisions trapped last turn).
We keep falling back, and pray that we get some troops all the way back so they can get some badly needed rest before the winter arrives.
83 USSR attacks resulted in 26 helds, 2 scouted, 51 (!!) retreats and 4 routs.

Losses
It is likely, yes.

Axis units destroyed
None.

German units disbanded
1 Fortified zone.

Turn 177

Overall
We are working our trains to the maximum during this period of mud. Units are being railed from Hungary and Rumania and back to Germany, but we are still a few turns from completing that. For now, we keep taking a step back, reorganize what we can, and prepare for the coming storm.
27 USSR attacks gave a result of 14 helds, 12 retreats and 1 surrender.

Losses
USSR : 36.000 troops, 177 guns, 188 AFVs, 179 AC.
Axis : 33.000 troops, 475 guns, 54 AFVs, 14 AC.

Axis units destroyed
403rd Security Division.
86th and 332nd Infantry Division.
236th, 276th and 912th StuG Brigade.

German units disbanded
6A Air Base, and the 110th Panzer Brigade is merged into the 1st Panzer Division.

not much that can be sensibly said (other than to prove you still have loyal readers), looks grim, but guess your final fort line will take some breaching
