JAMMED!

Post by ExMachina »

Playing First Contact 1986 as Norway and my units invariably get jammed.

Any pointers on how to break being jammed? [:)]

There are OECMs on Soviet ships. Destory them.

...Easier said than done!

Thanks for the help guys [:D]

So maybe let me put it another way: why are the Soviet OECMs so effective and Norway's so useless? [;)]

Two ways. Kill the jamming platform. Of course you need tofind it first. Based on the detail level of the game model your ESM should be able to get a bearing on the source. If you have multiple ESM platforms you should be able to get a rough location. Next close on the target to get your radar to "burn" through the jamming. Assuming the game model supports this.

Because the Soviets covered their ships in the damn things, just check out any Soviet era image of their ships, especially the RKR's - bristling with high powered jammers. Looks like another case of good modelling by the devs [;)]

Should be a matter of getting closer to "burn through", as mentioned.

Depending on your radar set you might also be successful in getting your main and side lobes off-axis with the jamming emitter, though this is often easier said than done.

So in general, is Norway pretty much doomed in First Contract 1986? Should I expect any of my ships to survive? I've played from the USSR side and it's a cake walk for them [:)]

What an awesome question!

The answer is that as you learn the game you'll come back to this one and play it again, but this time with more experience. And you'll find yourself using more sophisticated tactics and achieving what was before a lost cause.

IMHO, Command is BEST when it really challenges you to come up with solutions beyond "I shoot a missile at it".

Jammers don't work over the horizon, so if your boat is being jammed by an enemy surface ship then it means they are close and they know you're there. If your radar has gone completely blind (whiteout) and you're not picking up the enemy contacts at all you're in deep trouble. They most likely see you due to superior surface search radars and SSMs will soon be fired your way.

Stay close to the coast, and don't use radar too much. Your boats have relatively small visual signatures which helps a lot.

Ah. Good point. I think the default EMCON for Norway is active for this scenario.

Thanks! Finally won by paying extra attention to keeping my emissions minimal.

Still confused as to when the "friendly" AI decided to light up (and then STAY lit up)

You know what would be nice?--some sort of unit marker that shows whether or not that unit is currently emitting.

If its emitting an active radar you'll see the name of the emitter (or type) fading in and out above the unit. Its actually pulsing to the radar's scan rate.

Jammer says JAM.

Thanks!

I meant my units. They'll turn on their radars (for whatever reason) and I maybe won't notice it...the radar rings are nice but I'm usually zoomed to far in to notice them
