Display problem

Post by frpandore@free.fr »

Hi !

I got an annoying problem on browsing.
The side bar actually resizes, but not the text Inside it. (Doesn't take the whole width of the side bar).
And more annoying too is that sometimes, the Unit Status section doesn't display correctly.
Everything is right aligned and some buttons and texts are cut.
Sometimes some informations are missing in the bottom.
One more question : How to display Special Message Windows (tutorial) once hidden ?

Thanks in advance
Pandore

PS : A true Printer Friendly manual would be appreciated (without watermarks everywhere)

Hello,

Can you try setting your Desktop font size to 100% or 125%? From the screenshot I'd guess you have it set to 150%.

Thanks!

I am encountering the same problem. I suspect it has something to do with the fact I have set my font DPI to medium (125%). I have encountered this problem with other windows applications and that seems to be the likely suspect.

I am including an image to help show what other problems this creates as Pandore mentioned.

If Pandore and myself have the DPI set to either 125% or 150% there is probably a good reason. In my case I have to set it to that otherwise I start getting very bad headaches trying to read small text.
If I recall an article correctly you were defending using a windows UI because it gave you lots of easy customization options so I suspect this is a case where tweaking the setting to adjust correctly to different DPI would be a non issue.

After a bit of research this morning I've come across this: kynosarges.org/WindowsDpi.html

I have tried to apply some changes suggested on there but it started to mess all my other applications up and then I realized I paid almost 90$ for this game so I expect to NOT have to go through this circus for a "seemingly" trivial programming mistake.

So while trying to not sound too confrontational here, I think this one is on you guys... not us.

OK 100% DPI effectively solved the problem.
Though my second question now :

How to display Special Message Windows (tutorial) once hidden ?

Go to side briefing under game in the top menu.

May I highjack this (as it also has to do with display anomalies): my side menu, when a ship is selected cuts the graphical display for the flooding (pic attached).
It persists when I enlarge the side menu by dragging its borders left, it persists when I drag the window over to extend onto my 2nd monitor, it persists if I change the DPI settings, even if I change them >100%.
Any ideas please?
Thank you,
Martin

Hmm, why wasn't this game designed to run full screen so full DirectX graphic settings would take over? Running this windowed on the desktops is so....1980s.

There is clearly something wrong with that whole side menu interface. The buttons for one seem to be anchored to the grid from their right edge, yet when the area is expanded it is towards the left so it renders the whole process useless since they remain locked on the right side of the entire space. I bring your attention to the flood monitor and the unit type button that are clearly not displaying properly even though you have drawn the sidebar all the way out to the left of your screen. This is some very poor UI design which tarnishes the otherwise great work that has gone into this software.

I sincerely hope this issue will be addressed in the near future as it impacts a rather important part of the whole game.

No offense taken and I agree, we need to have this improved. Please give us some time.

Hi Martin,

Thanks for highlighting this and Wookiemart is right, this is on us. We're better simulation/back-end engineers than UI/front-end designers [:)]. We're getting there though!

Dimitris,
take the time you need. I can only speak for myself but I have full trust in what you had announced as being "in this for the long run". Sim is out for 3 days now, I cannot say if the amount of technical hickups had been expected by your side or not, but I see ongoing responsiveness from the dev side and I do believe that this will remain. Issues will be fixed, databased will be filled, but let me make clear that COMMAND has so far met my high expectations and not give the newbies or people lurking before buying the idea that this simulation is half-finished or such. It is not. It is outstanding in its scope, in its modelling capacity, in the database it uses etc. Dev team is committed to help on all majors that have surfaced since release and I believe that when this is tackled, they will continue to enhance the experience for us (strike planning, weapon database etc.).
Patience for all this to happen - yeah, why not? I have a gem at my mouse-wheel already, so why should I impatiently push for more glitter? It will come. These guys have invested man-years already for no money at all, think about the DB2000, think about the myriads of Harpoon scenarios. Now they run this project as a business project, what else then optimum results for us, the userbase, can we expect?
Maybe even now devs would like to open up a separate thread for "Things I would like to see" that are not current technical issues, but I believe the users already have something that - sooner or later - they would like to see implemented or at least considered. I have some and would like to unload them somewhere.
Bests,
Martin

I can see the game buttons in the low screen border, but I don't find where or what screen settings or so change, by the moment I'm only researching in the game without playing.
I'm running an relatively modern ASUS A55A, Windows 7, 4 Gb RAM, and the game starts and keeps smooth, but I don't find it neither in the manual.
And I agreed, that's not by far an unfinished product, it's fine from the start, minor issues aside.

The idea was "I can't see the game virtual buttons in the screen lower side"!!!

If your DPI settings are set to anything higher than 100% then you will have the same issue as us above. You will have to set it back to default like this:

Maybe, until the problem is fixed, set the screen resolution to a lower setting
and let the monitor scale. If the monitor can do 1920x1200, set the windows
display to 1680x1050 and let the monitor scale up. The whole picture should
be larger and it should not be too blurry with a good monitor.

First it will mix up all desktop icons but these will be ok if the resolution
is set back to normal. I've just tested this.
