1) Today saw a demonstration of why Japan doesn't want to let the Allies hold Soerbaja in the late summer of 1942. Nine B-17s port attack Kendari after some good recon. The CAP is heavy, but Zeros break off and decline to attack in four chunks, so the reinforcement waves are ineffective. The Forts get over the target in good order at 5000 feet, and these pilots have been flying Oil missions for months now. Forts carry a lot of bombs.

3) The chess game continues at Rangoon. I don't have confidence I'm winning here. This may be a very big, years-long mistake due to Indian, Aussie, and Brit replacement rates, but I'm committed. As Chungking will probably be gone shortly I need to use the Chinese for something worth it, and if I can, balance the VPs I will lose at Chungking. The air assault on the stack sitting in the Rangoon hex has done a lot of disabling damage. Has cost Japan hundreds of planes too, but he can build more of those. I think supplies were a critical factor for Japan, but now at least two medium large convoys have made it in and I can't muster the B-26s to get through against his CAP. Against in-transit merchants the Port Blair air force has done a little with torpedo Beauforts, but he is again plastering the island with Bettys and I have had to move the surviving B-26s to Ramree and Prome where they can't reach down the coast. And I can't get any navy in except subs due to overwhelming long-range torpedo bomber forces.

My overall strategy is to hold, with damage, at Rangoon and pin that huge Japanese defense stack. Pegu has about the same defenders it had when my attackers were driven north six weeks or so ago. At least one Guards Division, and a couple of others, plus support. These Allied units have been left completely alone from the air, and have somewhat recovered with some additions from Tougoo. The Big Stack, now in transit to Toungoo in Strat, will march on Pegu immediately. My hope (no calculations) is they win at Pegu and force a survivors' retreat to Rangoon, further pressuring supplies. With Pegu the land supply routes are plugged and he has sea and internal power as long as Resources last. He has no Oil from Magwe, so refinery supply does not exist in Rangoon. At that point I would do a Shock cross-river attack from Pegu with everything but a retreat-holding unit. And then an attack by the long-suffering stack at Rangoon from the other side. And hope that's enough to shatter the defenses.

But if the Big Stack can't take Pegu it all comes down. Even if it does win at Pegu I may not have enough engineers in the Rangoon stack to deal with the Forts (6 I think.) It's a gamble.

If it falls apart I have Bassein retreat open and good supply coming down from Chittagong. The Pegu stack could stay to threaten, or try to go south for Chiang Mai and cut the railhead there. Then wait out the monsoon and for some air power. If Chungking falls in the interim the Chinese LCUs won't take replacements and may have to live lean until 1944 when I may be able to re-take their capital.

I never liked chess much.

4) To add to the mix, one of the biggest Bombardment missions I've ever seen comes up the river to Rangoon and lets loose on the Allied stack. I don't know how far these guys need to go to get more bullets, and there's fuel at Sabang/Medan, but if it's used in ships it's not used in HI factories. This bombardment did little damage, but was exciting.

4) Port Blair is heavily bombed, costing two damaged B-26s destroyed. About half of the bombers which would have hit the Rangoon stack come to Port Blair today, so small blessings. Standard results at Rangoon; about 150 casualties for many damaged and destroyed 2Es. Soerbaja is bombed too, but there's more CAP there. The Fulmers left behind by the various travails of the RN carriers are doing very well against Zeros, and I actually have some of them in the pools. Soerbaja will go to Forts 6 tomorrow. Chungking rounds out the prep bombing, but not as much. With 60 LCUS now heading in to siege maybe bombers aren't important. Supply at Chungking dips below 4000.

5) The Big Stack begins unpacking at Toungoo and is aimed at Pegu. Two fully-rested 350 AV Chinese corps already at Toungoo are also committed to the march. In for a penny . . .

2) Rangoon bombing kills about 200 Allied for a normal amount of losses to Japanese air. The stack for Pegu out on the road tot he north of that base is stopped and held as it was approaching too fast. The Big Stack is still at Toungoo unpacking; I want everyone in one pile and then head into Pegu together. Supply is becoming an issue in the Rangoon stack. Calcutta and Bombay can't keep up. Ships are available to carry to Chittagong, but the supply is at daily build rates. I have four big convoys from Ct to Bombay in the wormhole, but it will be a couple of weeks.

4) Port Blair hit by 30 bombers; 16 damaged, 1 destroyed. A Hudson is destroyed on the ground. No CAP here, and most of the bombers have been dealt to Prome and Ramree. The B-26s were all aimed today at Moulmein, not Rangoon. They are just too few in number to really do much.

5) The attack at Chungking does not come. Japan is resting. The LCU count there shifts to 53 from 60 yesterday. 53 is a number I often saw for the stack one hex away, so maybe that is a better number than 60. Will it really matter with supply in the city at 2500? Naaaaah.

6) Allies foolishly try to follow up yesterday's bad attack by Japan at Roi-Namur. Not enough arty, not enough engineers for Forts 3. Won't do this again. This attack does show that the unit destroyed yesterday in Japan's attack was the 7th Indpt SNLF Coy and not one of the support LCUs.

Note: Saw something in the reporting that loos weird. Yesterday CV Zuikaku was reported sunk due to Mk 14 torpedo near the northern Marshalls. I re-watched the movie and no attack took place there. It's not in any report. Many days ago there was a 1-hit on a CV I think was reported as Shoho. I don't even recall without looking it up if it was a sub or aircraft. I reported this to Mike in an email as a possible synch issue, but asked him not to tell me either way. So right now the VPs include over 300 for Z.

There has also never been any report of any of the three CVEs hit in the Marshalls at the beginning of SNAGGLEPUSS, so I can only assume all made port, even though at the time I would have doubted any could. Strange game sometimes.

The Siege of Chungking Begins

1) Let's get right to it.

Two immense forces ram together in dense urban terrain at the capital of China. Japan has amassed 17 divisions plus thousands of AFVs and a huge arty force after carefully severing Chungking from supply sources and doing bombing prep for months against almost no CAP. Long ago in the general retreat from China the decision was made to leave behind all Chinese AA and arty and position it in the capital. Also, a fair number of PPs have been spent as available to increase Chinese leaders in the infantry corps to at least 50. Finally, forts were built to Level 7 and stopped due to the inability to get the 25,000 minimum supply on hand to continue to build. The downside of abandoning LI supply points like Changsha so early.

Japan attacks. The size and scope of the two forces is immense, probably the largest I have ever seen playing AE. The Allies can get a bigger stack together with the Sovs at the party, but in a combined sense this one is probably the king.

I don't know what Mike thinks about the results. I don't have the next turn today, and we've been carping at each other a bit over weekend turn-arounds since I started the other game with Cliff. Normally I would have a turn by the time the NFL begins. Today I don't. I do see a fair bit of traffic in his AAR, so perhaps he's mulling.

The outcome in the first day went very well for China. Much better than I feared. I had forecasted to myself at least a two level Fort degredation; that didn't happen. I knew Level 7 plus the Chinese arty would do some damage, but I had thought more 15000-20,000-type Japanese losses. It appears that the Japanese combat engineer count was insufficient.

Chinese supply is going to be flatlined after today. But the Forts remain, so at least one more highly damaging Japanese attack will be needed to get traction. The disabled numbers are simply staggering for both sides, but more for Japan.

And, of pretty big import in this, a VP-focused game, Chinese losses count only 50% of Japanese losses on a device basis. I don't know what the VP curve will do today, but it will be a good day for the Allies after a string of bad going back to the loss of the USN carriers.

2) In comparison, the rest of the map is a snoozer. Intense sub activity in and around Moulmein results in no hits to either. The reinforcements for that base are safely ashore. I see 7 LCUs of unknown make-up. The Chinese are blocking part of the roads to there from Bangkok, with more coming (slowly) but I'm sure the TFs delivered enough supply to do the job.

3) Rangoon is bombarded again by the very large IJN TF in residence. Only 13 Allied casualties and no supply destroyed. The LCUs in the Rangoon stack are mostly at local forts Level 2 and a lot of the bombardment is from DDs.

4) This one got an email from Mike with the movie file. I think he suspected a synch bug. I said no, but no more info. This is an SST delivering more troops to Wewak. Even with the base Japanese and troops present he can't see an icon. Interesting to me. Maybe everyone already knew this, but I did not.

5) Subs sink two patrol craft, one near Balikpapan and the other in Kwaj harbor. The large tanker TF heading NE from Balikpapan is prosecuted, but all are duds.

6) Back in Burma, sweeps shift to Prome and Ramree. Port Blair gets only one medium attack. Tojos are seen for the first time in Burma. I expect waves of them soon as we are playing with non-historic R&D. F-14 Tomcats are not available to counter.

7) Soerbaja gets punishing bombing and some CAP is lost. The Fort level goes to 6 today and building will cease. Supply has been pulled down under 10,000 in the fort-building and air strikes with B-17s. I think the heavies will look to move to Rabaul. That AF goes to Level 5 today, supply is lavish, and av support is being doubled from NE Oz in the next four days. Daily recon of Truk is being performed and some patterns are emerging.

8) The Allied stack at Rongoon takes about 300 casualties while exacting normal losses from AA. The Big Stack is on the road to Pegu, having unpacked in record time.

9) Japan attacks the small force holding Tavoy; the Allies counter-bombard. Tavoy is turning out to be a side-show right now. Maybe more later if more can be forced in there after things at Pegu are resolved one way or the other.

Not sure what you mean by 12:1. But I just got out my calculator and did the nums. I should have seen 102 VPS lost by Japan, so the number is indeed FOWable. I guess the total casualties made me a little excited. I wonder how the army would feel about an entire ID of devices and men gone for less than the value of a carrier? [:)]

On the good side, the Hiyo was confirmed sunk today from the IO battle with Wasp. It's most of the IJN swing to the bad.

On the ships, it was Japan that lost three (2 PBs, one of 4 VP, one of 2 VP, plus Hiyo finally recognized from sinking on 7/17) and had the VP hit. I haven't lost a ship is a few days, which is unusual for me. [:)]

Your point on 4Es pulled me up and made me go look and you are correct. I have been using the 4Es very aggressively in a before-the-bases-are-lost mode to hit economic targets. But they do add up. The British models in particular are pretty worthless un-escorted and I have frittered them away in Burma. On one hand I don't like only 4Es getting the VP penalty. Mavis models consumed as much or more industrial output as a B-17 but are only worth the VPs of a Nate as I read the manual. OTOH a 4E often has a crew of up to ten men, so losing one should hurt a lot.

My initial reaction was "only a 10VP swing!!" after an epic land battle with 40,000+ Japanese casualties. But the math is the math.

The 12:1 is of course also true. I have trained myself to think of it as a 2:1 ratio (12 Chinese for 6 Japanese devices), but in isolation Chinese are 12 per VP.

Bomb-a-Rama

A very quiet day-after-the-one-before. Pieces moving into position.

1) Numerous ineffectual sub attacks and ASW responses. USS Tarpon actually goes into the harbor of Toyohara and duds on a massive xAK. Other action near Truk, Balikpapan, Marcus Island, Donggala, and Namu..

2) The USN bombards Wewak. 19 Port hits and 3 supply, but the troops are unhit. CA/CL/CL/DD/DD force from Rabaul.

3) Most of the air action is at Rangoon on the stack. Over 400 casualties. When the time comes to attack Rangoon they may be too far gone. The flip side is the Big Stack, out on the road hurrying to join other forces one hex north of Pegu, is either unseen or unseen and ignored. But they are left alone. Rangoon/Pegu is going to a very interesting base inside a week.

4) Damage at Soerbaja stubbornly keeping the Forts there one point from Level 6. AF bombed again, getting a Hudson. All but the damaged B-17s have been moved to Rabaul. Trying to be patient there. Want a max effort raid on Truk harbor. Doubling of av support is still 2-3 days away at sea.

5) Chungking is swept (no CAP) but only bombed by 12 Sallys and about 14 Anns. Odd to me given that the battle is going to be a supply story.

6) PBang gets heavy bombing yet again, but nothing dents supply there at all. It's still at 215,000, and there is heavy AA as always. One lone Dutch Big Nose bomber recons Benk. and sees the Japanese stack, or at least part, still sitting there. But recon on Sumatra is almost non-existent, so there could be units marching around to the north and Djambi.

7) Allied bombardment at Tavoy is the only ground combat. No results.

I find that some things tracker is lacking behind in 1 day with. Wondered if this was another of those cases.

This is GREAT! MooseandSquirrel! Somebody has way too much time on Photoshop.

I have the next movie in house and will watch it now. The game schedule has evolved as Mike's work has gone to a compressed week. We won't have turns on Monday-Wed. most of the time, and the weekends will be crowded. This is one reason I started a second game with Cliff/Lokasenna; his schedule is more even every day. I'm not AARing that game and so far neither is he. Good thing as he is kicking me all over the map. [:)]

This game with Mike will continue to be daily AARed and has a very different flavor. It's interesting keeping the two straight in my head, but that's good for my mental health I'm told.
