Should I buy it ? and why !

Post by nukkxx5058 »

Hi, I love modern (particularly WW3) theaters, strategy or even better, grand strategy games. I prefer turn based but a good-clever real time would do the job.

I like it realistic but not too complex (harpoon huh ?)

OK: give me 3 good reasons why I should spend another 60 bucks (or so) in this game.

Just try to convince me... ;-)

It's a bit difficult as this game was essentially developed as a replacement for Harpoon. Command has a modern UI and is easier to play than Harpoon in that sense, but if you actively dislike Harpoon's complexity I really can't see you liking Command either.

Ok thanks for your honnest answer. However, in the meantime, I was unable to wait(they call it an addiction) and I ordered the game. I'm currently downloading. Sure I will regret, particularly after your comment ;-)

or not ?

I find Command a little easier to play. I find incredibly easier to build scenarios. If Harpoon 2/3 was beyond your complexity limit Command is a little better, but still not simple.

nukkxx -

The rules are well written and a fast read. I have played and replayed the first (Air) tutorial, the interface did not take long to learn and master.

It also appears that the scenario design feature is not difficult to use.

There is, as mentioned elsewhere, thousands of aircraft, weapons and ships listed in the database. I suspect that you will find the right timeframe and ship combination that will keep your interest.

Edit: I have just looked at your member profile. You are looking for a good WWIII strategy game; Command will meet that need. There is a large inventory of Soviet Pac Forces waiting for your orders - see what you can do with all that hardware... <grin>

Your money is not wasted, you will not be disappointed.

Glad to have you with us!

lots of wargamers, including myself, have been waiting a long time for a Harpoon replacement for modern computers and OSes.

the price seems a bit high but if i get years of enjoyment from it then it is money well spent, imo.

My first impression is ... how to say .... well, it's a disaster ! ;-)
Looks unplayable to me. I tried the first tutorial and directions were so unclear that I barely managed to take off my planes and then I was completely lost. Screens look like everything but a game. Is it a hardcore version of Harpoon ?

huh ?

First things first - I agree the instructions are not that clear but stick with it.
Go download the first patch, it moves Fallon out of range of the lunatic Migs barreling in
Then run the scenario again.

At first just flick through the menus' and dont forget to breathe [:)]

Open some windows, get used to the Airbase Aircraft Windows.

Learn how to set a Ref point and then create a mission based on that ref point
With the Patch remember that there is a new feature on the Missions and ref point menu 'Deselect all ref points' Massive boon to the game.
Clcik that, then click the ref point you just created so it is the only Ref point selected. Now go and create your first mission
Assign one F14 aircraft to that mission and see what happens. Don't forget to click the Pause/Resume and set time to 5 seconds.
If your old enough go get a glass of wine.
Watch what happens in the Airbase/Aircraft window.
Sip wine.

Then try turning the F14 towards the target area. Right click the F14 and select Plot Course.
Turn the Radars on and go looking for Bear.

Give that a go and come back here

This game is a work of art, nothing less. Is it perfect, hell no, will it be, hell yes.

As I have said elsewhere it is the Wargame I have been waiting 25 - 30 years for.

Thanks. I will try that :-)

Actually Nuke if you want I could knock you up a small scenario with a single friendly airbase and the aircraft of your choice with no enemy targets/bases.

Give you a chance to 'learn to fly' so to speak.

You could learn the basics of Mission Planning, launch nuances, giving manual orders, plotting etc etc

Let me know if that would help.

Thanks :-) it's maybe a little bit early as I am just trying to browse the menus to get a feel... Then I will try the tutorial again. If I'm still lost after making more efforts, then yes, I will appreciate such a basic scenario ;-)
I will also have a look at the manual. Might help :-)

They were in the scenario and there's a DB where you can look them up. Looks like the Norwegians lost 6 boats and didn't fire shot while the Soviets expended a bunch of torps and cannon shells gunning them down.
