You can also Ctrl button + right mouse click on an
empty spot on the map for some other functions.

Ack editing error guys. Sorry

Okay to define an area just hold down the control key while right clicking on the map. When the drop down appears pick define area and then click and drag to draw the area. Selected reference points will be dropped at each corner.
