Callsign Suggestion

Post by bsq »

Aircraft callsigns in some of the stock scenarios seem to include an awful lot of data that should perhaps be stored elsewhere. For example the tutorial has the Squadron Number and the Nickname for the squadrons, neither of which would be used as part of a tactical callsign on a radio net.

An example of this would be to take No 11 Sqn (RAF Coningsby) Typhoon FGR4 **

These use tactical callsigns of Havoc and Razor.

Given that the callsigns form part of the text label for the TDL symbols used, there should be the option to have both unit and callsign for aircraft - this way the shorter callsign would be part of the label, thereby decluttering the screen.

Can I suggest not putting your links in brackets? Makes them easier to click.

Where would we find actual tactical callsigns? Is there an open source site?

While some units use may use a stable call sign in peace time, this isn't a common practice in combat. Unit frequently adopt new (though occasionally themed, such as Wild Weasels with beer brands in the Gulf War) call signs on a mission by mission basis. This is to keep OPSEC intact.

I've used plays on the squadron names but we left it open for players to edit in the editor to let them have a little fun with it.

Here's one from my scanner days. It's a few years old, but it gives a good starting point.

Thanks AFIntel, this is great! If anything will give me a list to pluck from (I draw blanks when it comes to being creative)

There's a lot of countries in the world, with a lot of different aviation units. That "world" list is nowhere near complete.

Not meant as a slam, just pointing out the practical problem of implementing this across a game of this scope.

Ok when I started the thread, I was really trying to suggest an extra field to the add aircraft dialog. You would then have the ability to put in the unit name and also the unit callsign.

There are lots of sites out there with the callsigns on for various units, but that was not the point of my post. I just saw how callsign was being used on the display graphics and how it could be implemented better allowing you at a glance to see what units are at a base/on a ship and also to have a more meaningful and less cluttered TDL style display.

Agree with last post. I tried to make this request on another post. I think that names of units should be primarily based on the unit type with the call sign being secondary.

In the heat of a scenario, it can be confusion trying to figure out what aircraft of mine was just shot down when the message log only states the callsign, not indicating the actual unit type.
